This book is incredible! I will definitely be adding a copy to my personal collection of cookbooks. However, this is not JUST a cookbook. This "companion" book contains information about different types of garlic, what they are good for, their flavor profiles, where they grow best. There are plenty of recipes, for multiple parts of the garlic plant (I need to make several of these). Then, there are crafts and decor that you can make with garlic. I have several friends, and members of my family, that are fans of garlic. I feel this would be a wonderful gift for several people in my life.

Thank you to NetGalley and Storey Publishing for the ARC!

Oh, I'm going to be referring back to this book *a lot*, and am already planning to make a few of the recipes this weekend! It has a lot of fantastic information about different types and varieties of garlic, a bit about how to grow them, and then right into all the delicious recipes. Everything from soup, using garlic in savory AND sweet ways, and using the parts of the garlic that often don't get used, like the garlic scapes, the flowers, and doing things like black garlic. This book is for anyone who loves garlic, or wants to love garlic even more. Absolutely yes.

The Garlic companion is divided into five main sections after the Introduction:
- world of garlic
- recipes
- crafts
- grow your own
- picking and preserving

It covers the different varieties of garlic (did you know Elephant Garlic isn't really garlic - its linked to the leek family!), how to use garlic in a recipe, its green bits- known as scape, flowers, black garlic and the powder. There is a mixture of savoury and sweet dishes that can be made with garlic. The measurements are in imperial, but there is a conversion multiplication chart at the rear of the book. Each recipe has a colour photograph, the servings amount, list of ingredients and numbered steps to follow.

In the crafting section, it provides ideas on how to use garlic as a table display, headdress, bouquet, wreath and how to braid them together - think French onion sellers on bicycles only with garlic!

In growing your own garlic, there is a photograph of the whole plant, with labels showing you what each part is called - personally I would have preferred this sooner, but it is still welcome to see. The growing seasons shown in the book refer to North America/Canada. Included are recommended companion crops such as carrots and tomatoes as they help to repel bugs and which crops to avoid such as onions. Also included are lots of information on how to plant and look after your garlic crop.

Picking and preserving garlic explains how to store the garlic at home, freeze minced garlic and how to hydrate into garlic powder.

Overall this is a lovely book on garlic

I just planted garlic last fall for the first time. I found this book to be incredibly useful and insightful packed with beautiful photographs and plenty of recipes. Additionally, the author provides a wealth of information on the history of garlic as well as it's health benefits. I couldn't stop reading and turning pages to see what else Kristin Graves choose to share. For anyone who loves garlic, you won't be disappointed! Thank you for the inspiration to double my garlic crop this fall!

I wouldn't say that I'm a garlic lover when it comes to food. Yes, to garlic bread every time though! But I do love growing it! It is one of the most low maintenance plants in my garden. I plant it in the Fall and harvest in early summer. I also love the beauty of it. It comes in different colors, textures, tastes, spice levels. I've learned a lot since I began growing it and I preserve it for cooking and medicinal purposes. This book captures the beauty of garlic in culinary and gardening. It talks about the global origins. It also talks about how to use it in food and has a ton of recipes. Since garlic can be used in different stages of growth and preservation,(scapes, flowers, cloves, bulbs and powder) the recipes cover that too. There are even crafts if you have an abundance and are really into your garlic. Overall, a great book to have on hand when you are trying to come up with ideas on how to use garlic in a new way.

Everything about garlic told in a beautiful way, with historical facts, folklore links, garlicky recipes, crafts using garlic, how to tend to the crop and preserve this magnificent plant. This book is written by a garlic expert, whose family have owned fields in Alberta, Canada and grow garlic alongside other plants.

I received a copy of this audiobook from netGalley for a honest review.

This book is beautiful. I don't think I'll ever have the opportunity or be in the position to grow garlic like these people do but it's amazing to look at. All the growing, cooking, crafting and decorating ideas in this book are impressive. I didn't know there were so many kinds of garlic, let alone different types. I have visions of throwing a garlic themed bash now!

All you might ever need to know about garlic - the history and folk-lore, hardneck versus softneck, varieties (US mainly, not Europe), recipes by season focusing on the garlic itself rather than just a condiment/base which this means mainly things like pesto, garlic butters and the like; uses of whole heads, cloves, scapes, roasted, cured; crafts - place settings, wreaths, head dresses; lifting, drying, storing, plaiting; cultivation - timing, soil, ripening. All illustrated with lovely coloured photographs. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy.

Let me just start out by saying if you love garlic, you’ll LOVE this garlic companion book. Over 200 pages of history, variety, advice, tips, and recipes…all centered around a root plant that tastes delicious in pretty much everything!

My family is garlic obsessed. We would eat it on ice cream…if that tasted good. lol But seriously, we grow it, dehydrate it, and eat it. A LOT. And even though I thought I was a bit of a garlic specialist, I stand corrected because Kristin Graves presented information I’d never learned about.

✅ So many delicious recipes I can’t wait to try!
✅ So many tips for planting and storing garlic!
✅ And the history! So many varieties with varying health benefits I never knew about!

Can you tell this book excited me? But seriously, if you love garlic, cooking, or just interesting facts, The Garlic Companion by Kristin Graves is the books for you!

I can't wait for my upcoming garlic harvest this summer. This will be my second year growing garlic in grow bags in my backyard garden, and this book was very informative and got me even more excited. The book was interesting, easy to follow, and had some great pictures. It began by sharing some history of garlic and the different types of garlic and then went on to offer some recipes and craft ideas. It also explained how to grow and preserve garlic. This book would be an excellent gift for anyone who likes garlic and enjoys cooking or gardening.

This book is a farmer's celebration of garlic - it is a cry of love for a condiment appreciated all over the world.
There are recipes and crafts and beautiful imagery of garlic as well as gardening instructions and variety descriptions. It is an unusual and beautiful coffee-table book and will certainly offer new ways of preparing garlic.
I must admit that I'm not a big fan of fermented black garlic which has a big place in this book, I have tried a few times and attempted to cook with it without feeling too enthused about the results - but this book made me want to experiment with again.
Would highly recommend to people enjoying the country life, or with a big cooking interest.
