I love a good thriller and I particularly enjoy Phoebe Morgan's writing style. she manages to draw you in and build suspense and intrigue. i'd describe this as the perfect holiday read, you will want to dedicate a decent chunk of time to this as its very addictive. There's something compelling about it that keeps you hooked, its twisty, dark and creepy. great read.
Another great thriller by Phoebe Morgan, and I loved, that like her last book, it is set abroad. I remember that after reading The Wild Girls, even though it a thriller where murders happen, I really wanted to visit Botswana (where the book was set) as Phoebe had done such a great job in setting up such a vivid picture of the beautiful destination. In this book, Phoebe again paints a very vivid picture of the scenery for the dual centre holiday for the two couples who visit Thailand (Bangkok and Koh Samet). (If she ever wants a career away from the world of publishing, the tourism industry is surely calling her!) The couples, Theo and Saskia and Holly and Lucas are quite different and would probably not be on holiday together if Theo and Lucas had not been friends for many years. Problems soon arise and it becomes apparent all is not well. But who is behind the difficulties and are they random or is someone in the group being targeted? Does all of the group have secrets? Is anyone telling the truth? Will anyone come back from the holiday unscathed?
A great thriller, perfect for reading whilst on holiday or at home to capture the holiday feeling!
Thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for a Kindle copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Really enjoyed it. A perfect holiday read. It has suspense, tension, secrets, sun and sand. The characters were well written, it's not the most shocking of twists but the writing makes it a really captivating read none tbe less. Its one of those easy reads that doesn't take too much focus to just get lost in and enjoy the ride
This is the first Phoebe Morgan book I’ve read, and the premise of the book really appealed to me- perhaps because I’ve not been abroad on a proper holiday for some time and the thought of a book about somewhere warm was very appealing!
I’m never usually a fan of books written from different viewpoints/ people as I feel there’s a lot of overlapping but I only noticed this once with this book- it was very readable and only took me two days. I think it would be a good holiday read - not too taxing, certainly enough to keep you entertained and an ending you probably wouldn’t predict (well unless you read the description on goodreads first which gives it away- although FB you do need to read the book to find out what it’s all about!).
All in all, I liked it- a solid 3.5 from me and I’d probably read more from Phoebe Morgan on the back of this one

Really Creepy, Scary and intriguing. Had to keep putting it down but soon drawn back to it!*******************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************
Four friends book a holiday to Thailand. They think the two couples know each other well but just what secrets are they hiding from their partners and friends? And what will it take to break their bonds of friendship? A wrongly booked hotel? Feeling that one couple can’t keep up financially? A former acquaintance appearing out of the blue, followed by a shocking crime? Paradise is not always what it seems…..
I felt that the blurb in Goodreads gave too much of the story away so don’t read that if you don’t want a spoiler!
Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read and review.
A somewhat decent psychological suspense read following two couples on a holiday in Thailand where the past comes to haunt them and secrets are threatened in being exposed.
This was an okay read. The characters unfortunately didn’t stand out for me and the actual suspense part of the story wasn’t quite strong and gripping enough for me to turn the pages fast.
I have previously enjoy all of this authors book so I was excited to get hold of this one! However I think after The Wild Girls I was left underwhelmed with this one. I found the over description of narrative running through the characters heads annoying and some of the characters actions unrealistic. As a consequence for me it was not the gripping or exciting read I was hoping for, to the point that I actually knew the twist at the end as it happened! So a bit of an anticlimax for me. However that said it was more than readable and was a quick and easy read but for me not as good as the author's previous work.
Sultry Backdrop..
The holiday of their dreams, four friends, murder and secrets to die for in this atmospheric suspense with a sultry backdrop. Who did what, how and why and how far will any of them go to protect each other…..or, indeed, themselves? With a deftly drawn cast of mostly unlikeable characters, a well imagined setting, a narrative littered with secrets and lies and a rather unexpected denouement.
A great, sizzling romp of a holiday read! Total escapism and fun! Lots of suspense and intrigue, a great novel!
Two couples go on an exotic holiday and get caught up in a murder. Who’s guilty of what and will they be able to keep each other’s secrets?
I enjoy a fun, dark, holiday read so this appealed to me. The reader is thrown straight into the usual holiday dramas, however it takes a long while for the actual thrills to begin. I enjoyed the atmospheric setting but feel like the characters themselves were unlikeable and childish at times, however the story is told in different view points which made it slightly more interesting. This was an ok read overall. I found that not a lot really happened for a long time but feel this would suit those looking for an easy summer read. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this copy in return for an honest review.
Theo & Saskia newly married head on a trip to S.E Asia with their friends Lucas & Holly. A sighting in a club of someone Saskia used to know… Unusual happenings and secrets start to surface. A constant feeling of being unsafe and unhappy memories arise. Gripped right till the end!
Perfect read for those who enjoy:
- Destination thrillers
- Stories that get your heart racing
- Travelling
- Unseen twists
With thanks to HQ and Netgalley for an ARC copy in return for an honest review.
It should be the trip of a lifetime – four friends all ready to have fun thousands of miles away from home. But when a murder – and a particularly vicious one – shatters their paradisical vacation, plans are scuppered and suspicions are raised. Three of them know the other has committed a crime… they just need to figure out whom.
What a gorgeous book! The author has a great gift for characterisation - nuanced, interesting, believable people. This book has so many gigantic twists in every chapter. And once again I just Loved reading it. I suppose all you need to know is that it’s a cracking action-packed story with a highly satisfactory ending – I really do recommend it.
Four friends go on holiday to Thailand. It’s supposed to be a fun filled time away from an English winter, where they can chill out, relax and have a good time. Unfortunately the start of the holiday is inauspicious, with no sign of their booking at a swish hotel in Bangkok, which leads them to a rough hostel in the backstreets of the city. Needless to say, over the coming days, this basic accommodation is the least of their worries.
This is a poorly written, naive and somewhat immature offering. Silly characters who have delusions of self importance and no common sense. Far too long to be interesting.
With apologies to the author, but this is very poor.
1.5*
Thank you NetGalley and HQ.
A brilliant book which I thoroughly enjoyed from the beginning until the end with great characters. The storyline was twisty and kept me on the edge of my seat and everything was brought to a satisfactory conclusion.
Thank you to Netgalley and HQ for this ARC which I have no hesitation in recommending.
Two couples go for a holiday in Thailand, and given all the tensions, secrets and lies between the four friends, eventually things go to pieces.
We get the story from multiple POV, which works well here. The setting is rendered beautifully and adds an atmospheric element to the story telling.
This was a bit of a slow burn in my opinion but with lots of small developments along the way to keep the reader's interest engaged, and it was quite entertaining in the end.
I knew that this was going to be right up my street from the second I read the blurb and oh my wordy word was it!(yes is the answer, just in case😉)
This is the story of four friends, two couples, who are heading off on holiday to Thailand. I was thrilled that we got a pov from most (one isn’t covered) and was sucked in almost immediately to their different personalities, secrets and problems.
From the off the settings were so perfectly done, with even the plane ride having issues and making me so nervous (I am so glad I didn’t read this on a plane!)
And that was what this book was, making you wonder what is going to happen, and when, a slow burn but with enough worrying incidents and the introduction of a character to mix it all up! I loved how the author would separate the characters and kill you with nerves but that ultimately and at times they were at least aware that something was wrong- nothing bugs me more than one person going through everything alone!!
All in all I adored this book and am absolutely wrecked from having to stay up to finish it. The characters, the twists, the setting, all of it really! I loved the twist in this one, I’ll admit the final final twist (last page twist is what I call them!) wasn’t for me, but aside from that just perfect. Fab fab book. Beyond recommended! Thanks so much to the publisher for the arc in return for an honest review.

'The Trip' centres around a group of 4 friends who are holidaying in Thailand. We follow them on their adventures and as they get to know others around them, by the end of the trip, one person will be dead.
I enjoyed this book, Morgan does an excellent job at transporting the reader to Thailand. I liked imagining myself in the hot weather and undertaking the activities the characters do. The characters are an interesting bunch, individually I liked them however there was something that did not gel for me and I found it hard to believe they were friends. This aside, they did provide entertainment and kept my interest.
The plot is quite a slow build, we know something disastrous is going to happen but Morgan really teases it out. I do think something could have happened earlier in the plot to really ramp up the action. There are elements of this that are unbelievable too but this aside I did enjoy the plot.
Thank you to NetGalley and HQ for an advance copy.
Thank you to netgalley, the author and the publisher for the advance copy.
Sadly I really didn't enjoy this one. I found it really slow and non eventful for quite a while.
I didn't care for any of the characters.
