Phoebe Morgan's strength is definitely creating atmosphere. I thought she did a great job with the claustrophobic feeling of Bangkok, particularly the nightclub and the accommodation. There were a few things that came to nothing - the mysterious warnings by the taxi driver and the girl in the hostel - but the reader is required to suspend disbelief quite a lot. Overall I enjoyed it a lot. The characters were well-rounded. Even Theo, the least substantial of them, was believable. I would have liked to see more of Saskia as herself before she became so disconnected from her friends that it was hard for the reader to be invested in what happened to her. But it was nicely paced and the plot was good. I think the ending was excellent, with the character we expected it least from suddenly using what happened for her own gain - and the reader actually supporting her in this. A good read for the summer sun loungers.
Rating: 1.5/5
As a full length novel, this latest offering from Phoebe Morgan leaves a lot to be desired. I can't help thinking that it would have worked better as a short story of around 100 pages. The main problem is that so little happens for such a long time. For the first two-thirds of the book it really does meander around quite aimlessly. There is plenty of repeated carrot dangling, but the narrative contains lots of padding and the storyline makes very little progress. If you only read the first few pages and then skip to the final third of the novel, you should be able to piece everything together without having had to wade your way through the rest.
Also, by way of a heads-up, the plot summary on "goodreads" contains a massive spoiler!

Four friends go on holiday together to Thailand. We have the usual stereotypical two-two split where Theo and Saskia, a fairly wealthy couple, can easily afford to stay in luxury hotels and indulge themselves, whilst poor old Lucan and Holly are struggling so much that Holly has every last baht worked out on a spreadsheet. So they arrive in Bangkok at high-end hotel Theo had booked them, but Oh No, the booking can’t be found! Off they schlep to the nearest hostel where they have to share a dorm room with some unknown stranger. Could things get any worse? Holly feels that at the age of thirty they’re too old to stay in a hostel . What? That seems to be her prime concern. Now, I’ve travelled, extensively in many countries in SE Asia, often backpacking and staying in very cheap accommodation, and my concerns would be sharing a room with a stranger, not having anywhere secure to put my passport, and not having a lock on the door.
The taxi driver who transports them from the hotel offers advice about being safe in Bangkok – this is seen as “sinister” by our intrepid travellers, as is the woman at the hostel who warns them to be careful. Why on earth would someone who is looking out for your well-being be seen as weird or sinister? They think nothing of drinking the water, and oddly suffer no ill-effects. Anyone travelling in SE Asia knows not to drink the water, and the chances of not becoming ill afterwards are almost zero! Theo states they eat dogs in Thailand – no they don’t! The eating of dogs and cats is illegal in Thailand. Has this author even been to Thailand? Her ignorance of the country and it’s customs would indicate that she hasn’t, and this sort of misinformation irritates me.
I’m at the 25% mark on my kindle and I have to tell you these four people are so stupid I can’t read any more as I’m hoarse from screaming at them. I have bookmarked so many pages with instances of stupidity it would take me hours to go through them all. The writing is immature, the characters are dreadful and I just can’t see this developing into anything as nail-biting and thrilling as we readers have been promised. Do not waste your time and money on this drivel.
Who doesnt love a Pheobe Morgan book?
4 friends on holiday in Thailand, what could possibly go wrong!
This book is a page turner, the chapters are nice and short which makes you keep turning the pages.
With one couple struggling to make ends meet and the other having more than they know what to do with its makes for an interesting combination.
The group manage to befriend a stranger whilst on their trip and he quickly goes from delightful to creepy. Its clear theres something not quite right but what, what and who will work it out?
If im honest this is a story that makes me question whether I want to go to Thailand, all the little things that happen, the bumps in the road. It'd spoil anyones holiday - but although these guys know somethings just not right, they ask but dont push, as if they dont really want to know.
I loved this book. I quickly fell into the plot and needed answers. I needed the characters to work out the answers quicker too! overall its a great anywhere read, beach, train, sofa waiting room. You'll be so focused on the story the background noise will all fade away.
The plot was familiar but it was done in a good way. It was twisty and kept me engaged. A good entertaining read overall.
I really enjoy books by Phoebe Morgan and i thoroughly enjoyed this book.
Two couples are off on a fantastic trip to Thailand, they spending a couple of a days in
a plush hotel in Bankok and then heading to one of Thailand's islands to a villa for from serious r and r.
Plans to awry as their plush hotel don't seem to have their reservation and so the group's first night is
spent in a hostel. One of the Group, Saskia thinks she sees someone from her past in the hostel, someone
she had hoped she would never have to lay eyes on again....
After the first night in the hostel they group spend their second night in the original plush hotel
when Caleb, savior from the group's visit to a Thai monument joins the group for dinner. Caleb found
holly's bag after she had taken her eyes off it for seconds.
Saskia's reaction to Caleb is one of shock which she just manages to hide from the group.
Who is Caleb, who is he to Saskia and is he a danger to the group....
Great description of Thailand, I want to go! Lots of twists and a great ending, what's not to love
With many thanks to Netgalley for this free arc and I am leaving this unbiased review voluntarily
I do love a Phoebe Morgan book! This is a great read full of tension and little twists throughout the story making it a compelling read. Very nice flow to the story as each chapter is from a different person and this gives the reader useful insight into their personalities. Set in Thailand and although I have never been the descriptive narrative does make you feel as though you’re on holiday there. Nice twist in the final chapter. My only criticism of Ms Morgan is she doesn’t write enough books! Another winner from this very talented author
Thank you to Netgallery and the publisher for this ARC. The publication date is the 9th May. I loved this book and the Thailand setting I was drawn to this book and I whilst reading it I would always what would happen with the group as a whole but individually.
Overall, an addictive book with many twists and turns that grabs your attention from the first line! 😊
Four friends go on holiday in Thailand. Things go wrong from the start. Their bags are lost, the hotel booking hasn’t gone through and they end up in a hostel. Lucas and Holly aren’t bothered as they’re not as well off as Theo and Saskia. Then Saskia sees someone from her past she’d rather forget and everything goes from bad to worse. Great twist at the end.
I love these luxury getaway turned hellish nightmare books with a big dose of secrets and mystery.
It's a great story line, fast paced with lots of twists and turns!
Reminds me of one of my favourite reads, the Lions Den!
I love a thriller set on holiday and this one finds us In Thailand with two couples in their early 30s - Saskia & Theo and Lucas & Holly.
There is a financial divide between the couples with one counting every penny and the other with more than they know what to do with.
The book kicks off well and we soon find out there is a secret that we are waiting to uncover. They don’t seem to be having much luck on the trip with things going missing, bookings having not gone through and creepy messages being left.
This is a quick easy read and your mind can wander off to Thailand while it is wet and gloomy at home.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author and publisher for my arc in exchange for an honest review.
A great holiday read, nothing to demanding. Well written characters that all have there flaws, a slightly predictable tale but overall i found it enjoyable.
My thanks to netgalley and the publisher for my copy.
Fantastic. definately a summer read, or read it in the cold ,damp, wet winter months and transport yourself to somewhere nicer. I loved the twist and was desperate to know the "secret", I didnt really like the characters, they are those people you see on every holiday, they appear confidant and more richer and appear to have more "fun" and interesting times., I liked the flow of the story and and I found the setting of the book, since I have never visited Thailand and this book made me want to visit it.
Overall I really enjoyed this book, the plot was semi predictable but I was able to see past this and get drawn into it as I was questioning who to trust!
Thoroughly enjoyed this thriller and couldn't put it down. Immediately I was transported in Thailand and I loved it! The four main character POVs were entertaining and they seemed like real people with flaws. The ending I'm not too sure about but I also can't imagine it ending any other way either?! Recommend for those who love holiday/vacation thrillers - be prepared to want to go to Thailand immediately!

Not a good read.
Four friends decide to go on a holiday to Thailand. Saskia and Theo have no money worries and live a luxury lifestyle whole Lucan and Holly are scrimping to save to buy a flat and are struggling to pay for this holiday. On arrival they find there has been a mix up with the hotel booking and end up in a hostel. Things start to go wrong immediately and isn't helped by the fact that they all have secrets.
Nothing is happening in this book. Please don't waste your time.
Thanks to NetGalley and HQ for giving me an advance copy.
Many thanks to NetGalley, HQ and Phoebe Morgan for my ARC of 'The Trip' in return for an honest review.
Yet another brilliant novel by this author. I am a big fan and have read all of her books so was delighted to receive my advanced copy.

It seems by good fortune that they meet Caleb who finds Holly's bag with the passports in it. They believe he’s a hero and allow him to join the group. The twists and turns begin and develop in a cleverly plotted storyline.
Excellent read and highly recommended
A terrific thriller set on an island with a bunch of friends and one of them could be the killer - what more could you ask for in a book? Loved this one!
This is just the kind of book that appeals to me - I love a thriller set on holiday. I really enjoyed the writing style and could picture the characters and locations easily.
The book was well paced and the plot held my attention - I enjoyed finding out what secrets the characters were keeping.
I thought the decision to have Saskia and Holly's POVs first person and Lucas's POV third person was odd and a bit jarring, and I'm not sure it's just because this was an advance copy but some of the sentences were weird. For example 'It would be the first of many injuries he inflicted on me, but it wouldn't be the last' - half of that sentence is redundant, and 'I jump inside the swimming pool' - who says 'inside' rather than 'into'?! There is also a timeline error - it is mentioned that the holiday is in January, but the two months later section happens in October.
Overall I did enjoy this book, I'm trying to judge it as if it was a finished copy, and it was entertaining.
This was such a fantastic gripping read it pulled me in from the first page until the very last. It was a fast paced thriller with many twists and turns. It is told from three of the friend’s perspective's which built the tension within. I really enjoyed the writing style.
Saskia And Theo are newlyweds with no money issues Lucas and Holly have been together a couple of years and saving hard for a flat to buy. The four friend's have decided to go on a trip of a lifetime to Thailand. All of them have secrets which they don’t want the others to find out. Things start to go wrong as soon as they arrive the hotel has got their booking and can’t fit them in. So they end up in a hostel where strange things start to happen notes are left feeling of being watched. Then They meet Caleb who finds Holly's bag with the passports in them they all think he’s a hero he seems to be lonely so tags along with the group. Can anyone in this group be trusted all with there secrets how much danger are the in.
This was a fantastic read which I highly recommend. Excellently writing from start to finish and what a finish it was such a jaw dropping ending. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for my advanced copy.
