For nonfiction books this was very easy to read. It would make a great addition to a classroom where students are learning about Black history.
This book is a must read! For readers looking to understand the black experience in America and what has changed and what has not over the past 100 years, this book comprehensively covers it well. It is almost like an almanac -- it reminded me of reading the "People's Almanac" in the 1970's but "A Reflection" brings an important and missing perspective to history as we learned it in our school systems. Meaning there is a lot we were not taught! This book is divided into decades - from 1909 to 2009. Within each section we get information about the societal, cultural and political context including demographics, the mood of the black community, employment, education, crime, health, Media, Black Church, the Arts, Sports, significant figures and heroes and reflection on the decades and a reflection over the century. There is a bibliography at the end which encourages us to continue the study and research into this overlooked history. The publisher indicates the audience for this book is middle to high school age but this is a really important book and I recommend it to all ages!
Thank you to Netgalley and Brown Reflections for an ARC and I voluntarily left this review.
This was really impressive. While reading this, readers get to experience black life as a snapshot, one decade at a time, in the United States. You get to see events and accomplishments in art, politics, history, so many different aspects, that it feels as though you are immersed, one era at a time. It was shocking to see how quickly and yet how slowly so many things changed, and it was fun to learn about so many important people and their achievements. I would recommend this book for courses in American history and/or politics, because there is so much relevant background information as to why events occurred. But casual readers can get a lot out of it too, and the illustrations were numerous and wonderful.
Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this
