A very cozy autumn read, small chapters so perfect of picking up quickly and getting a nice little chunk of story
I loved this - I normally do though for this author. How he can keep people engaged in his writings when there might be similar themes but they are also very different. Enjoyed the POV style as usual here and it worked so well. Unusual maybe for it to be based around walking - loved it!
You Are Here was absolutely phenomenal. Brilliant characterisation, wonderful imagery, fascinating premise. I love this writer.
Thank you Netgalley for my review copy of this book.
Finished it tonight. It was laugh out loud in places which I liked and the characters were interesting (if a little frustrating in places!) But overall a good read - little bit predictable - but I walked away smiling 😃 His writing was lovely. I'd give it a B+
2.5-3/5, huge thanks to NetGalley and Sceptre for my copy.
Seem to be rating everything half marks these days, but October has seen a return to reading and a load of meh and blah blahs.
Michael is a divorced York geography teacher. Marnie is a divorced London copy editor. Their dazzling friend Cleo thinks they should both spend less time alone and so they end up thrown together on a walking holiday, everyone else bails, and Michael and Marnie tentatively fall in love (usual rom com obstacles in the way of course)
This was a perfectly pleasant read, there were funny bits, poignant bits, good set pieces and you wanted them to end up together, however, it was all just a bit dull. Marnie’s try hard jokes weren’t funny, Michael’s geography lessons were over used and it felt played out and shallow.
I like David Nicholls general writing voice and he seems awfully nice as a person, but his best work is still One Day and I think somehow I like him better on screen than on the page.
Wouldn’t recommend or not recommend, you know what you’re getting here.
An enjoyably gentle read, with a touching love story at its heart. I felt it lacked a little as far as the real grit of tackling such a monumental walk was concerned, but as a romance rather than a walking manual I suppose I shouldn’t complain too much.
On finishing this book I immediately thought of three people I knew who needed to read it, which I think has to be the best possible recommendation. Not only that, but I started googling the walk the story is based on. Maybe I should do a coast-to-coast walking holiday? I ended up in quite a wormhole. This is not something I have EVER thought before, but suddenly, instead of seeming like the most miserable idea in the world, I felt like it should be our next family holiday! Fair to say, the book got under my skin. It strikes me how few perfectly middle-aged books there are. While this could happily be enjoyed by any age, it SUNG to me as a middle aged woman. Marnie, especially, was utterly wonderful. How novel that a insular and lonely female character could also be witty, bold and brilliant! The characters are so nuanced and real, and a love story where both parties bring not only baggage, but also preferences and a confident sense of self, is a revelation. Highly recommended.
I couldn't read this as an ebook for some reason so will get it when it comes out! Sorry! (Leaving a 4 star review to be fair.)
I loved these characters so much and felt very invested in their journey across the countryside. One I will be recommending!
LOVED LOVED LOVED #YouAreHere. A sublime tale, gently told by a master storyteller, full of emotion and humour. Lydia Leonard and Lee Ingleby's narration of the audio brought Marnie and Michael to life in the most glorious way.
'Fruit and fibre, together at last' might very well be my line of the year!
I really wanted to like this book, and having loved one day I thought I would…..and judging from other reviews I am in the minority….I found it hard to get into and a bit dull, but will attempt again and see if I feel differently!
A wonderful page turning read, very engaging, fun in places and a little thought provoking. Recommended Read.
“Michael is coming undone.
Reeling from his wife's departure, increasingly reclusive, taking himself on long, solitary walks across the moors and fells.
When a persistent mutual friend and some very English weather conspire to bring them together, Marnie and Michael suddenly find themselves alone on the most epic of walks and on the precipice of a new friendship.
But can they survive the journey?”
So, in order to appease their mutual friend Marnie and Michael end up walking together, abandoned by their walking companions they plod on.
As I would expect this book was amazing. Two beautifully drawn character, an attention to detail that takes you in their footsteps, hilarious, achingly sad and understanding.
Excellent read, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for letting me access an advance copy of this title in exchange for my feedback.
I absolutely adore David Nicholls. I think One Day is one of my favorite novels of all time! The Netflix series was our perfection. I cannot wait to read review and acquire his latest creation and I just know readers will be so excited to get this beautiful book into their hands.
Another winner from this author. Marnie and Michael are both living alone avoiding people and any type of social occasion to lick their wounds from past events. They meet when their mutual friend talks them into going on a group walking holiday. Michael decides he will go one step further and continue the walk, aiming to complete the coast to coast walk across England in ten days. Marnie is doing the minimum so she can hurry back to her comfort zone in London. The story of their lives gradually comes out as they start walking and talking. Marnie decides not to rush home, and every day is a new adventure along this rugged and difficult walk. The walk itself is an integral part of the story along with the places and characters along the way. Really well written, full of different twists and turns, and unexpected moments. I was sad to finish, but am half inclined to go and try the walk myself now!
"You Are Here" by David Nicholls is a beautifully written and emotionally resonant novel that captures the complexities of life, love, and the journey of self-discovery. Nicholls’ trademark wit and keen observational skills shine through as he weaves a story filled with relatable characters and poignant moments. The novel explores the idea of finding one's place in the world, both literally and metaphorically, as the characters navigate the highs and lows of relationships, career struggles, and personal growth. With its blend of humor, heart, and introspection, "You Are Here" is a captivating read that resonates with anyone who has ever felt a bit lost and is searching for their own path. Nicholls delivers a story that is both entertaining and deeply moving, making it a must-read for fans of contemporary fiction that touches on the universal themes of love and identity.
Nicholls has done it again! This book had me totally absorbed from the first page, just like his previous novels.
I was a bit late to the party with this one, but David Nicholls books don’t come along every day so I found myself putting off reading it because I didn’t want it to be over! (Ridiculous, I know!)
The characters are so believable, and their dialogue sparkles on the page. In just a few short sentences you feel like you’re there on the fells in the pouring rain. It’s a funny, moving, and ultimately life affirming book that makes you believe in love, the power of nature, and the benefits of a good walk.
I love David Nicholls, so I knew I would enjoy this book. I think the FMC is a bit too annoying at times and the chemistry was sometimes forced.
I absolutely loved this book - funny, sad, poignant, realistic and romantic all in one book!
Cleo gathers a few friends for a short break walking some of the Coast to Coast path.
As the UK landscape alters from lakes and fells to moors the group dynamics shift and alter, people get to know each better and find they like or dislike one another as a consequence.
