It was hard not to go into this book wondering whether it would live up to One Day, which is one of the best books I have ever written. Especially with the will they won't they romantic story that this followed it was easy to think I would compare. however this is a wonderful book and I loved the charactyers and the story. I liked how we learned more about them as time went on and I finished the book with a different option of them than I first formed at the start.
Michael and Marni meet through their mutual friend while walking coast to coast and while not love at first sight, over the course of their time together the lonely pair start to form a bond.
I loved how sweet, funny and most importantly real this book was! Both of the characters are so awkwardly witty and I’m not sure I’ve ever rooted for a couple as much as I have before.
I am a huge David Nicholls fan so was so excited to receive a copy of this. The novel follows Marnie and Michael, two lost souls brought together on a long-distance walking trail across the English countryside. Both characters are grappling with personal challenges: Marnie, a divorced copy editor, is navigating the complexities of modern dating, while Michael, a geography teacher, is reeling from the breakdown of his marriage.
Nicholls deftly captures the nuances of their characters, their vulnerabilities, and their slow-burning connection. The stunning backdrop of the English countryside serves as a poignant counterpoint to the emotional turmoil of the protagonists.
While the pace is leisurely, the novel offers moments of genuine humour, tenderness, and insight. Ultimately, You Are Here is a heartwarming story about finding oneself through connection with another person. I loved it.
David Nicholls at his best! I loved Marnie and Michael and found it so refreshing to hear a love story set in mid life
Nicholl's new novel is an intelligent romance which astutely maps the contemporary emotional landscape of thirty and forty-something Britons struggling to balance careers and life whilst looking for love. Michael and Marnie, the will-they-wont-they couple at the centre of the novel, are deeply relatable characters who carry the story forward with empathy and humour. An honest and perceptive book about what it means to make yourself vulnerable. Highly recommended.
Marnie and Michael are characters you'd love to meet at the pub—charming, humorous, and refreshingly down-to-earth. Their coast-to-coast walk from the Irish Sea to the North Sea is both a physical journey and a quest for personal clarity. Despite their past relationship struggles and preference for solitude, David Nicholls brings these characters and their supporting cast to life with ease. The novel offers the joy of a scenic adventure without the effort of travel, making it a delightful read.
I knew I'd like this before I started it because I love David Nicholls and you probably do too. I liked it even more than I expected to, which is really saying somethingm, and I stayed up late two nights in a row to finish it. Romantic, funny, clever and wise about the human condition - highly recommended and many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
Does David Nicholls every get it wrong. Each page is enjoyable, and you can tell every word was carefully selected. The storyline is well written and as always the characters are likeable, Michael is a geography teacher and Cleo his friend , invites him on a hike. It is there he meets Marnie. I loved this book, I found it funny touching and brilliant. I can't wait for more from his master of storytelling.
David Nicholls can do no wrong in my eyes! Did this book make me cry? Yes. Will I be recommending it anyway to everyone else? ABSOLUTELY YES. I can't wait for this to become a modern classic which it deserves to be
David Nichols has done it again, You Are Here was a lovely as I was expecting it to be, and more. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Terrific read and very funny. Loved the characters and cared deeply about them. Thanks to NetGalley for a preview copy of this book.
Marnie and Michael are both single, lonely,
and almost reclusive. They are thrust together on a walking holiday, and so ensues a very funny and witty friendship, with the promise of a spark of a very British romance....David Nicholls never fails...Read it!
I really enjoyed this book. The will they, won’t they kept me hooked throughout. I now desperately want to go for a long walk/hike around the lakes!
David Nicholls will always be a firm favourite of mine and I just adore his writing style. He evokes a sense of place so strongly and helps you to really anchor yourself into the world of what and who you are reading. The main characters you love to hate at times and their flaws feel so realistic and beautifully written. I loved the glimpses of humour throughout the writing too and found myself laughing out loud!
David Nicholls has the magic, doesn't he? Gorgeously drawn characters, snappy dialogue, transportive descriptions of the scenery, You Are Here is a grown-up romance that has a place in my heart.
Marnie and Michael, two divorcees with a lot of their own history, connect over a shared attempt at the coast-to-coast walk through the Lake District to the North York Moors. Their relationship felt so natural, their interest in each other built so organically and by the end I just wanted more.
The one thing that stops this being 5 stars, for me, was the last 15%! The ending felt a little rushed after such a lovely, languorous 85% of character development.
Having also just read Slow Dance by Rainbow Rowell, I am loving this trend of grown-up romances (maybe they've always existed and I just hadn't been reading them) that focus on personal growth and don't shy away from how those extra decades of life have shaped a person.
4.5*
Marnie and Michael are two divorcees with the rather forceful Cleo as a mutual friend. Marnie lives alone in London following her split with Neil. She has become more and more insular partly because of covid and partly because she works entirely from home.
Michael lives in York and is a geography teacher in the school where Cleo is the deputy head. Michael's split from Natasha has made him extremely sad and he walks to be alone with his thoughts and to avoid people.
Cleo wants to play matchmaker so when Michael decides to do the coast to coast walk during the Easter holidays she invites herself, her son and two friends; Tessa who is outdoorsy for Michael and Conrad who lives in London for Marnie. Needless to say Cleo's plans don't go according to plan.
This is another triumph for David Nicholls as you slowly become totally invested in the growing relationship between Marnie and Michael. Willing them both to admit the growing attraction they feel for each other. I loved it.
A superb warm hug of a book.
If you loved the recent Amazon series of Nicholls 'One Day' you probably read that book some years ago.
'You Are Here' gives you brand new hit of likeable characters and takes you through key life moments of love, loss and realisations.
Nicholls ability to bring you into his world, believe in the lead characters and project your own life experiences on the decisions and outcomes they encounter.
'Romance fiction' brings images of soft focus pink roses and a million cliches - David Nicholls is a master writer and avoids these cheap short cuts with 3d descriptions and the surpises that keep the pages turning .
Read it now before it becomes the next hit TV adaptation.
Thanks to Hodder & Stoughton and Netgalley for ARC which I read belatedly, so many other people will be singing this book's praises.
In a nutshell, Michael, a man in early middle life, goes on a Wainright walk to try to get some headspace as his life has unravelled at the end of his marriage. One of his colleagues invites herself, her son and some friends along to the first weekend of the walk, in the Lakes, to try to jolly him out of his funk, against his better judgement. One of the weekend walkers decides to stick it out for an extra couple of days, and Michael goes along with it for reasons that are unclear - at least to him.
This is funny, heartwarming, delicate and robust, with a great sense of place, and beautifully written characters. Even if this is not your thing, if you appreciate fine writing, maybe give it a whirl. You will want everything to be all right in the end. You might feel emotions you thought you were too jaded for. And that will do you good.
I loved this! I loved the main characters and how they gradually got to like each other.
A definite feel good read.
A wonderful story that had you rooting for the characters from the first page! I loved reading this book and would recommend to anyone. Definitely a new favourite.
