This is a cute take on the good verse evil, light verse dark, angel verse demons. You follow the MC Blue on her journey to becoming an Angel...well an Archangel. She however is an orphan with black wings and everyone says she is cursed and a demon and shuns her at every turn. I am curious how her journey as an angel in training will continue and end. I look forward to book two!

A Kingdom of Quartz isn't bad, but I can't say it's a standout title. The main character is a child angel who has black wings and a hidden power. It definitely looks like they want to reference a sense of religious horror around the Demons. It sounds like a story that will have a lot of potential as far as lore is concerned, but this being only the first volume it didn't catch my attention in any way that makes me feel a need to continue to the next book.

Probably worth a read and has a lot of potential. I wouldn't say no to reading the second book, but I'm in no rush.

The art in this book, y’all! It’s perfect. It’s the chef’s kiss level of perfection!
The story is beautiful also. There is a relatable “demon” girl (who is not a demon), but who has to hide who she is to be accepted – and then the character is developed further. There are demons that look like biblically accurate angels pictured in the art.

First and Foremost, the illustrations were amazing. Half of the reason why I picked this up was because of this.

The plot was very traditional kinda manga Black Clover vibes, had a lot of the traditional tropes but I really enjoyed it.

Will definitely continue!

I really enjoyed this comic. It was about a girl called Blue who was different from everyone else because she had black wings, everyone thinks she is a demon so she has to hide her wings where possible until one day she saves people with her powers and when she doesn’t remember this makes us think that maybe she does have some demon within her. I’m hoping the next volumes delve into more of Blues powers and or past. The images in this comics are really clear, detailed and fun. The story was a blast and I can’t wait for more.

Netgalley Review

Star Rating: ★★★★☆

I think it's going to be a straight forward Naruto/Black Clover kind of manga, but I'm into it.

Basically the story goes like this: Young orphan girl, built different, society doesn't accept her and she has a dark power locked inside her. A super powerful angel is willing to take her as his protégé. First though she has to make it to angel training school and become in angel. Then the volume ends.

I'm intrigued about the characters, no character that I just completely disliked. I'm intrigued about her power and what it can do. I'm intrigued about it all so I'm definitely excited for the next volume of this manga!

Read it and decide for yourself.

I really enjoyed this manga! It's so cute and Blue is a bundle of energy. She's sort of an outcast due to her black wings and lives in an orphanage but she's not without friends or people who show her kindness and she acts as a protector for those who are made fun of. I love that she can't just sit by and watch as her friends or even strangers are being attacked whether physically or verbally -- she always wants to defend and help them. Blue aspires to be an Angel one day and she definitely deserves to. Since it starts with her being so young, I didn't expect there to be much fighting or death but I was wrong. There's action in this first volume and I like that it jumps right into a story while still building up the world and history. The art is fantastic and very detailed. It ends on a bit of a cliffhanger so I hope there's a volume 2 sometime soon! I will happily continue this series and recommend it to any manga fans or people who like a good underdog story plus angels and demons.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of A Kingdom of Quartz 1 from Kodansha Comics via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

First of all this manga was stunning!
The drawings are incredible and deserve some appreciation for that alone.

Now onto the book itself haha, this quick book focused on this young child, living in an orphanage, who in a world of aspiring angels is out of place with black wings, which gets others to call her a demon.
This book and hopefully this series focuses on her trying to be an angel, whilst facing some interesting disasters, and challenges.

I really enjoyed this book and hopefully will continue on with this series and how it ends!
This book was a solid 4 stars to me :)

I'll start off by saying the art is beautiful and draws you in. One of the closest series that I can think of that is somewhat similar is Black Clover. We are given a world where there are angels/demons and our MC is an orphan and has a dream to become something that almost everyone doubts they can. I am left with a few questions, but hopefully they are answered later on.

Volume 1 starts to set up the plot a bit before the time skip that happens toward the end. Our MC is an orphan named Blue and she is a bit different than others due to her wings being black versus white. As you can imagine, others see her black wings as a curse and call her a demon. Her dream is to become an angel to protect others. After an encounter with some angels and an archangel, Blue is even more determined . However, one night the orphanage is destroyed by a random demon attack. When someone close to Blue dies trying to protect her something dark awakens... What is this power within Blue? Will this hinder her chance at becoming an angel?

Thank you to NetGalley and Kodansha for this e-book copy!

A Kingdom of Quartz is the story of an orphan named Blue with pitch-black wings. She is seen as an outsider by society but one day she gets recognition from an angel. This recognition helps her when her orphanage gets attacked by demons and she is caught in the crossfire. To protect her secret, the angel makes Blue his protege so she can become a full-fledged angel. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this story. Blue's journey is your typical underdog tale but the world-building of the series is what truly captivated me. This is great for fans of Witch Hat Atelier and other dark fantasy manga.

I read this manga in one sitting. The idea is interesting and there's potential to have a twist on the "outsider with unimaginable power" cliché. This first volume already hints at interesting things, even if it's still a bit predictable, but it's easy to enjoy it, get immersed in this world, and get curious about it.

The art is also beautiful, with a dreamy aesthetic that makes it all look so adorable but keeps that dark atmosphere at all times. It is that contrast, at times even a balanced blend of elements, which drew me in most of the time, in addition to the script and the ideas. It is all so clean and easy to follow, I felt like a kid again discovering the magic of manga.

I did have a bittersweet relationship with the script, however, due to it being predictable and not as original as I wanted it to be. There are good elements and an engaging development, but I can already see where most of the things are pointing out, and it's tiresome to have this impression over and over again.

However, I do recommend that you give it a chance. It's a nice story that makes you go back in time as you dwell in it, makes you smile a lot, and keeps you wondering what will happen next. I liked Blue as a character and hope to see her growing into something different along with the story. It's too early to say anything about it, but for now, I want to keep my eyes open for the next volume.

This book was so good!! I immediately love Blue’s character and design. She’s adorable and I hope she achieves all her dreams! The story was super interesting and captivating to me, and I want to learn more about the world Blue lives in. The art is gorgeous and I love the character designs. The angles are beautiful and I love the demons. They look pretty creepy and I’m loving it! I am a huge fan of Madoka Magica, so when I saw that this story was like it was so so excited (and it definitely didn’t disappoint!) I can’t wait to read more.

Thank you, Netgalley for my advanced reader copy.

In a world where angels protect people against demons, a young girl with black wings wants to become an angel to prove herself. Because of her black wings, Blue is said to be cursed, and she is shunned. When the orphanage comes under attack, Blue watches in horror as her home is destroyed, Then, Blue feels a dark power within her, one that will change everything.

This was a great start to a new series. It got dark, but the story picked up so quickly. I loved the artwork. Blue is such a fascinating character. I'm more than impressed with the world and I want to learn more. I can't wait for volume two.

Omg! This is so good! I need the book version! I want to read it all….know the world more and the characters! I need a never ending series! Wow!

This is the story of an orphan girl Blue whose dream is to become an Angel in the world of angels who protect people against demons. Well, she doesn’t have the perfect features of an angel as everybody else thinks and with what she has would make others see her as a demon.

She’s an outcast and doesn’t seem to belong. She gets bullied but she has a good heart and good intentions. Who knows this is her secret of making herself become better and her unknown power to become stronger!

I can’t wait to read the next volume!

Thank you, Kodansha Comics, for the advance reading copy.

Absolutely captivated by this manga, I was entranced by its stunning artwork and immediately drawn into the compelling storyline. Blue, the protagonist, resonated with me on a personal level, as I found a small reflection of myself in her character. The depth of the narrative, coupled with the gorgeous art style, kept me hooked from the very beginning.

The manga shares thematic similarities with other masterpieces like Witch Hat Atelier and Children of the Whales, featuring a young protagonist burdened with unforeseen responsibilities in a fantastical world with unique rules and magic. What truly stood out were the characters with single wings and the powerful portrayal of a character with prosthetics in positions of authority, addressing the challenges that disabled individuals often face.

One aspect that I truly appreciated was the glimpse into Blue's normal life before chaos ensued. It provided a clear understanding of her character and added depth to the anticipation of her journey.

Special thanks to Kodansha for providing an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review. Finally, a work that lives up to the comparisons mentioned in the description. The manga exudes vibes reminiscent of Witch Hat Atelier, particularly in its art style. While I cannot directly compare it to Puella Magi Madoka Magica or Made in Abyss, the dark undertones are certainly present.

The tale unfolds with a young orphan, Blue, aspiring to become an Angel and protect the Quartz Kingdom from demons. However, her unique black wings lead to ostracization and bullying. The narrative takes a dark turn when a demon attack claims the lives of her friends, revealing a hidden power within Blue. The question of whether she can fulfill her dream of becoming an Angel becomes a compelling focal point. I am eagerly looking forward to the next chapters to see the development of this intriguing story.

First of all the art of gorgeous! And I’m really interested in the world and in Blue. There’s a lot I’m waiting to know more of, although it was slightly confusing at times with some jumps, I think there’s potential in this. Also, it kind of reminds me of Witch Hat Atelier

I was blown away by this first volume. “A Kingdom of Quartz” promises to be a new favorite series. A mix of angelic and dark fantasy, with beautiful visuals and intriguing storytelling. Initially I expected a fairly sweet story about a little girl, Blue, achieving her dreams despite prejudice against her black wings. Much like the main character, I was surprised by the sudden horrors that befell her and the dark powers that were hidden inside her. “A Kingdom of Quartz” vol. 1 was a great start for the story, and leaves you interested to discover more about Blue’s mysterious powers and her magical angelic world. If you are a fan of “Witch Hat Atelier” I think you will find a similar spirit in this book.
