I got this book for free via Netgalley for a review.

I picked this one because the cover caught my eye, it's gorgeous and the blurb sounded great. I loved it! Once I started it I couldn't put it down until I had finished the volume, I was so hooked. The plot just pulls you along from the very beginning.

I loved the characters, particularly the protagonist, Blue. This book was the perfect mix for me of cute characters and dark situations. The world building seems really cool and I'm keen to explore it further in future volumes.

The art is just gorgeous the whole way through, but especially the coloured pages at the beginning.

I will definitely be picking up the next volume when it's available.

I totally loved this manga.
It was a wonderful surprise, from the story, to the characters and the world in which everything takes place. I was completely blown away.
The characters are fantastic, they all have a great impact on the world and story and do their best for what they want and what they truly believe in.
The art is stunning. The attention to detail and the way it connects with the story is beautiful.
All I can say is that I need to go buy the second volume.

Blue is blue because she’s the only black-winged Celes (read: angel) in the entire kingdom of Quartz and people treat her like she’s a demon. When actual demons invade, she manifests some wild powers that may prove the people more right than they think.

If I threw Sephiroth from <i>Final Fantasy VII</i>, some <i>Witch Hat Atelier</i>, and a chunk of <i>Harry Potter</i> into a blender, I might get something closely approximating this story, which is basically ‘orphan goes to wizard school but it’s for angels’. There’s even a flipping train with an elitist bully!

This volume’s critical flaw is that it talks too much and shows too little and what it does show it doesn’t show very well. It has a massive, massive amount of lore and terminology to inflict on the reader and none of it was especially interesting.

Sometimes, sorry not sorry, Celes really is more.

Which is a shame because Blue might be cut from the cloth of plucky orphans everywhere, but she’s still trying to do her best and has a pure heart to contrast with her black wings and whatever happens to her during the shocking opening scenes.

I will give the story some credit for having the stones to not only let actual children die, but to also introduce characters that seem like they’re here for the long term and wipe them out early on. It cuts through the talking parts to firmly declare that there will be some stakes maybe.

There’s definitely a lot of prejudice and scorn being worked through here as well, although it is pretty ham-fisted, though having a character with black wings is putting a pin on it anyway, I suppose.

The action is not terribly interesting, honestly, and the demon designs are really… underwhelming. The art is actually pretty good for the most part, although there are some questionable choices with regards to feet at some points.

There’s just a feeling of ‘been here, done that’ to it that I couldn’t quite get past. If you have room for another one of these stories, I don’t think this is a total waste of time, but I wouldn’t reach for it first either.

It jumps around in time a little too much and focuses on characters versus info dumps too little. The character work is much stronger the lore, honestly, especially once we see a new group of cast members coming in towards the end.

But even there, the ending to the volume is moderately ridiculous, pitting a wee girl against a seasoned soldier with the former’s dreams on the line. Even if it’s more than likely the girl succeeds, it’s pretty thin.

I read a fair bit of <i>Witch Hat Atelier</i> and that had both art and a strong story. This has some alright stuff, but lots of creaky and otherwise meh bits to accompany it. Blue is great, but I think she deserves a better story.

3 stars - not my cup of tea, and if you wanted only one book in this genre there are better ones to reach for. More for genre fans than anybody else, honestly.

This graphic novel is so stunning! The story gripped me right away and I can’t wait to read the next volume. This is a gripping and interesting story right from the start. Blue has such a pure heart and she wants so badly to be an Angel.

The community that surrounds Blue has rejected her due to her being born with black wings. Everyone thinks she is a cursed demon and they are afraid of her. When a Demon attacks her orphanage Blue uses a strange power that she didn’t know she had and kills the demon.

This power seems to be a whole other being controlling her body and her eyes change shape, but the prince Angel takes her under his wing anyway in the hopes her power will help him in the future.

I want to devour this story up. I want more! This is the kind of manga series that can capture me and become a full on obsession. From, the art to the story telling this is immaculate stuff. Everyone buy this like crazy so this series can see the success it deserves! This manga is just so awesome!

Blue is an orphaned Celes whose only goal in life is to become an Arch Angel so she can protect the people of Quartz. Unfortunately for Blue her wings are black as midnight prompting the townspeople to fear her as a demon, the arch enemies of Quartz, luckily for Blue though she has found a protector in Prince Caspian heir to the Throne and Arch Angel. However, after a demon attack that awakens Blue's true powers (powers that are far from Angelic) it becomes clear the Blue stands to either be Caspian's savior or his demise.

This was just a very cute, very quick little Angels vs Demons tale. Honestly, nothing ground breaking here or at least not with this first volume. Blue so far is very typical of this type of character; born with the ability to destroy the world but dedicated to protecting it. I can't see this going many different directions based off of this first volume. That being said I'll probably read the next one simply because I really love the art and everyone needs a feel good story.

Overall, I'd say this is a definitely one of those mangas that if this type of story is your jam you'll probably enjoy it. However, there are other mangas such as Witch Hat Atelier and even Noragami that have a similar plot and are more enjoyable from Vol. 1.

Every art of this dark fantasy manga is gorgeous. I love it.
The story is also interesting and I want to see how it will continue. Who would not love a world where angels protect the people against demons, and a young orphan with pitch-black wings which may hold the key to the kingdom's fate.

I am giving this book a 4 out of 5 stars; this series has great potential, and the world-building so far has been pretty easy to pick up and understand. This manga takes place in the Quartz Kingdom, and we follow a young girl named Blue, who, unlike other kids with angel wings, has black wings. Of course, this comes with a host of problems for her, including discrimination because of the wings and terrifying power that will likely take control of her one day.
The writing is a little too on the nose cliche for me to give it a five-star review, as for a first volume, it read very quickly and was very short, and I probably would've liked it to be a little longer to fully get into the world and leave me on the edge of my seat. Overall, I look forward to reading the next volume when it becomes available and hope to see more of the series as it continues.

First time I have an ARC of a manga book and I was thrilled, didn't disappoint. I would like to start by commenting the design of the characters in all scenes, I loved the mix of light and dark scenes when she's having a fairly normal day of when for instance sister Beth dies, you can easily see the change and the intense scenes before even reading anything, that's why I love manga, so expressive.

I like how original this story is, never read any manga or any book with any similar plot and I loved that. You know from the start that she's no ordinary girl and until the end you have some situations when you can see there's some dark power inside of her however she's so docil and gentle with people so I'm very curious to read the rest of this story and find out I'd she's going to be the people's salvation or their doom. 😊

Going in, I didn't expect much from A kingdom of Quartz. My tune was very quickly changed when I was greeted by this work's absolutely beautiful art style.

Each panel clearly has so much thought put into it. Some panels are reminiscent of art nouveau graphics with their beautiful curving lines and floral patterns. It could also be the artists taking inspiration from baroque paintings and architecture which would make sense thematically.

What I'm saying is, the art is very, very pretty.

I also found the character designs to be really appealing. While fairly simple, I think the artists game them each enough flair to remain memorable. And how could I forget? The horrific, Lovecraftian, all-seeing-eye angel/demon designs are also very cool and I can't wait to see what else the artists have in store.

The story itself is interesting and engaging. The writing is charming and I found the characters to be quite likeable. (The adorable little bonus comic at the end really solidified that for me.) The story flowed very nicely and I found no issue with the pacing.

Overall I had a lot of fun with this one. The art, as mentioned, is definitely a highlight for me- but it also has a solid story and likeable characters as a wonderful bonus. I'll definitely be on the lookout for the next chapter.

I think this was a really good comic. I think it’s very interesting. It’s fun to read it’s got twists and turns and I think I would definitely read more books in this series going forward because I think the main character is interesting and I would love to see her journey and progression into becoming an arc angel. I also love the art style. There wasn’t too much writing on the page and it was fun to learn about this world. It wasn’t too overly complicated. It was easy to understand and simple in execution.

Obsessed is an understatement. This manga absolutely blew me away in story, art, and character design. I haven't been this excited for a new series in a while.

Also, the art is STUNNING. It reminds me a lot of Witch Hat Atelier. The mangaka is very talented.

A girl with a dream, what could go wrong? In a city with angel like beings, Blue wants to become an arch angel. Only problem, she was born with black wings and therfore deemed cursed. But after she met Prince Cassian, she is full of hope, that even she become like him. But within Blue are laying powers she doesn't even know about. The first Volume is a great introduction to Blue and the Kingdom of Quartz. I'm looking forward to read more.
This Manga remindes me of Demon King Daimao.

ARC Review - Such an amazing book. The world building compliments the storyline throughout. The ending rounded everything up quite well but there are still so many unanswered questions, so I cannot wait for the second book! I also really liked all the artwork.

Definitely going to continue this one! The Madoka feel is strong in the sense of that shift in tone during volume 1. I'm intrigued by the story and characters itself. Blue seems like an interesting lead, while Prince Cassian coming in and out of the story will be a great add! Not to mention the one winged boy! The art style for this was very pretty and there's definitely a lot of rules + world building that I'm sure will take place over the coming volumes! If you're into that Angels v. Demons lore this is definitely for you!

I don't even know where to start with this one. The art style was incredible, it is one of the most beautifully drawn manga I have ever seen. The story? I am so ready to continue this one in volume 2, because I am very intrigued to see what direction it's going to take.

I highly recommend checking this manga out!!

Usually when things are like, "for fans of x, you'll like this!" A Kingdom of Quartz cites, "for fans of Witch Hat Atelier..." and I can actually see where they're coming from and don't... disagree? The art is BEAUTIFUL with a swoopy, varied-lined-style that is reminiscent of Witch Hat while being all its own thing with a divided world between angel-esque folks and demons, an early series tragedy that sets the protagonist into motion to train up, and a spirit of hope and gumption.

I actually really liked this, I loved the art and the character designs and I'm really interested in the lore of the world and how things will develop with Blue's secrets -- both known to her and those who care for her and those she hasn't yet discovered. I'm definitely going to keep an eye on this for future volumes.

Bomhat's first volume in "A Kingdom of Quartz" follows Blue, a young orphan who is born with black wings. In a world where everyone else has white wings, she is painted as a demon. This doesn't stop her from dreaming of becoming an angel soldier.

I honestly really enjoyed this. It's been compared to "Madoka Magica" and "Witch Hat Atelier" and honestly, not bad comparisons. I think it takes the best parts of both of those series and while some bits are a little messy, I think it does the comparisons fairly. When it goes dark, it goes dark without really having to show us visceral images of young girls being killed and torn apart (not really) and when it's light, it's lovely. I do think that sometimes it can be a little uneven. Like the bullying is quite a lot but I think it makes sense within the world.

I enjoyed the art too. It's pretty and enjoyable to look at. In this day and age when so many mangas look like crap and read like crap, it's becoming a treasure to come across a manga that looks good and reads well.

Another magical girl type manga that gets to be dark but ends up being a wannabe of the ones that habe already done it better. Makes me just want to read the good ones again.
