Summary:

Japan is being torn apart. There are those who welcome the new immigrants with open arms. And those who would rather see the world they once knew come back. Regardless of those desires, the culture clash is real.

Riko is not known for her even temper, but that is sometimes a good thing. For example, she didn’t hesitate to save a young boy in peril. Now she’s responsible for this boy named Eito. As it turns out, this will be the first of many events threatening his life.

Review:

I don’t know why, but while I was reading A-DO 1, I felt like this story I should have read/heard about ages ago (like when I first got into manga). Either it just has that vibe, or this is a new translation of a classic. I could see it going either way.

Maybe it’s because it has such strong Akira vibes? I’ve seen it described as “Akira with plants,” and I’ve got to say - that’s spot on. So, if you’re debating about reading A-DO 1, consider that comparison.

Overall, this is a fun story with high stakes, high action, and a fast pace. I would have liked more character development or even a dash more world-building before we were thrown into the deep end, but since I could keep up, it obviously works.

I loved the artwork and the overall style of A-DO 1. It’s worth a read, even if you’re not sure you’ll complete the series.

Will I continue the series? Nah

Really enjoyed this one! I should have read it so much sooner! But I don’t regret it. This maybe a new obsession! I love the characters, plot, etc.

I absolutely couldn’t put down this manga. The story was so captivating and darkly adventurous. I cannot wait to continue with this series and own them in physical copies!

A-do tells a unique story highlighting social issues such as xenophobia and tensions evolving around immigration. Its protagonist is a mysterious young boy being traced by the military, and an unlikely hero who has come into the folds to help him. It has a neat story and characters, but they feel somewhat static in the chapters, however this may change with further volumes.

This manga was a great volume 1 that instantly hooked me. It definitely reminded me a bit of Akira, so if you enjoy that one, I would definitely recommend you check out this. Highly recommended.

I really enjoyed this. Love the dystopian nature of the story. It seems like other ones, but it is done well! Its full of action and kept me turning pages, excited for each new page.
The beginning was a bit slow but once it got going, I couldn’t put it down. I am really excited to see where the story goes. This isn’t like a lot of manga currently out so it’s a breath of fresh air if you like sci-fi and dystopian type books.

Personally I think there is nothing special about this manga. I think it’s playing to safe and it’s redoing tropes that have been done for ages. That being said it still an interesting read.

This felt pretty derivative of literally every dystopian sci-fi post Blade Runner, but it does it pretty well!

I love the plant-ability premise, and how the manga very much fulfils dystopia’s aim of pointing at present, real life events and pondering how we are likely to be going forward (it starts with an anti-immigrant protest, for example), but I don’t know if I’ll be continuing with this series.

I read this through Netgalley.

The main character is a 19-year old girl who finds a helps a mysterious kid who has powers and is being pursued.

It has an interesting premise and the characters are promising. There are a lot of questions about the powers and the people who pursues the kid but they will probably be answered in future volumes

The setting is a cyberpunk one, with a lot of robots doing the work of humans and interesting devices. I am curious on how much the technology is different from the one of our world and what advantages and disadvantages has.

Overall a nice action pack first volume of a new series

A-DO is a story that starts a little slow. Thrown into the world with very few explanations about how it works, that information is slowly spread throughout, but still leaves plenty that could be explained as the series continues.

The characters felt a little light on personality. It was hard to get to know them throughout this volume. Yet, that didn't stop me from getting invested and curious about everything that was going on in this world.

What really kept me invested was the plot. There is a mystery to it for the longest time. It's timed well to have the mysteries slowly solved to bring up more questions that really keep the reader wandering just exactly what is going on in this world.

The art style is pretty gritty which adds to the story. It adds to the darkness of the story and really feels perfect for it.

Fast-paced and action-packed, A-DO is a manga that sets up an interesting world that could interest a number of people. If sci-fi worlds are your thing then I suggest giving this one a chance.

A-DO is an addictive sci-fi manga set in the not too distant future. From nearly the first page we are pulled into the action. The story is fast paced but it isn’t just that which keeps you hooked. Riko and Eito are brilliant, particularly Riko. I loved her fiery personality and how it came across. I also adore how we learn a little bit about Eito and the program he has come from but not everything.
The art work really suits the story and genre as well and it will be perfect for sci-fi fans, dystopian and action manga fans but at the same time I think this would be a perfect gateway manga. To give you some idea I instantly pre-ordered all the volumes currently available in English after reading this and cannot wait to see how the story unfolds.

This was a vibrant, action-packed and tense start to what I think will be a highly praised and exhilarating series. The illustrations were so well done and perfectly represented the pace and chaos in this series. The characters are intriguing and I am excited to learn more about them and especially more about their powers. I am excited to see where the rest of the series goes.

When Riko, a struggling high school dropout, stumbles across a mysterious boy on the run, she decides to take him under her wing. However, she discovers that there’s more to this boy than meets the eye. He can manipulate plants from his body and, even worse, the military is after him! Now must unravel the mystery behind his strange powers while trying to protect him from snipers.

A-Do, Vol. 1 by Amano Jaku introduces a fast-paced sc-fi manga that doesn’t feel too far off in the future. The world itself paints an interesting backdrop where people’s credit scores are attached to their IDs and affect everything they can buy and a wave of anti-immigration sentiment has hit Japan.

While the storyline itself isn’t the most original so far, it’s got mystery, action, heart, and a cool retro manga aesthetic, and, all and all, it’s an intriguing start to the series. I’m curious to see where the story goes from here because this first volume ends on a major cliffhanger!

I don't know what I was expecting when I asked for the Arc, but one thing I know, now I need to know how the manga continues. Eito is a little kid with plant powers that has run out of a facility. The only thing you know about him is that, name and powers, you don't even know that these entail. I want to learn more abut the rest of the kids that were with him, and if Riko is going to be an integral part of the story moving forward. If you want to read something with Akira vibes, this is your story.

A-DO was really interesting and it reminded me of Akira actually. The setting is already something else, Japan has been the target of immigration and now people are displeased and protesting. Riko ends up in the middle of protests and helps a boy not to get hit by a truck. That boy is Eito, who's on the run and has special powers. The army is after him and the two need to run together. The whole special powers thing is interesting, since the powers are plant-based. Such a novelty idea. I also like that Riko is the older one and Eito is still a kid, there's this sibling feeling to the manga. The violence and blood looks awesome when heads are cut and there's action and more Akira vibes. I love the 1990 feeling the manga has, even the art.

The art looks nostalgic, but lively and there's a lot happening all the time without the manga being all over the place. The rhythm is good and the pace altogether too. I've missed serious scifi series such as this and I'd like to know what happens in the future! But even more so I enjoyed the political and societal setting, which was awesome.

I got this book for free via NetGalley for a review.

This story follows a boy called Eito whose arm can transform into plant-like vines and a woman called Riko who, after rescuing him, is trying to look after him, but he is the target of assassins.

The world building was good. It gives me Stranger Things vibes, with the way that everything seems normal, except there are kids with strange powers being hidden away from society.

The characters were reasonably well written, although a little light on personality and motivations. I felt like I didn't really get to know Riko in this volume, but I was still invested in her helping Eito.

The plot was interesting enough to keep me wanting to read more. You are very much just thrown into the story with no explanations, but it is interspersed with flashbacks that help fill in some of the knowledge gaps as you go along, which I found worked well.

The art style is fine. Not one of my favourites, but it works very well for this story, giving it more of a gritty vibe.

Overall this was an enjoyable read and I would happily continue with the series in the future.

Thank you NetGalley for providing me with this arc in exchange for my honest review.

The cool and intriguing cover got me interested in reading this manga.

It’s a great urban fantasy with lots of action.

Riko is a very brave 19 year old girl, who left her home because of a controlling mother, when she was only 15. She takes our little test subject Eito, under her wings after saving him from almost being run over by a truck and from getting in trouble at a police station, after he used his strange powers. A whole team with guns is after him and keeps trying to kill him. Eventually, they send another test subject after him, a very dangerous one. It was really funny to see that guy going into the real world for the first time and the surprising cliffhanger ending, after he finds Eito, makes me wanna read the sequel right now!!

Want to thank Netgalley and publishers for giving me the chance to read this book.

The first half of this book was so, so. Then the second half really took my interest. It reminded me of My Hero Academia meets Parasyte in a way. Also, really, a cliffhanger? Now I NEED to read the second volume!
