I would say three and a half stars.

It is the second work I have read by Nagisa Furuya and I like his style. It is a light story that shows us the quick bond that is created between two high school students and how their feelings grow. Quickly, fleetingly but tender and pure.

It doesn't stand out, the characters are quite predictable... the story is too. It's fun, to pass the time and read a nice manga.

Thank you Kodansha Comics for the issue I read on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

What a beautiful, sweet love story. We see two boys with names similar to the number 8 and how they become friends to maybe more. Nagisa Furuya's writing is always just so sweet and real. I loved this story, although I wish we could have more. The side characters in their stories are always so great and I want more of them, I want even more of the main characters. For Nagisa Furuya's debut manga, this one still holds up but just a little short in my opinion. But I will still highly recommend this author!

Ha sido una lectura súper adorable! Lo personajes tienen bastante química y sus interacciones son super cutes. Con ganas de saber como continúa y cómo avanza la trama.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for sending me an advanced copy in exchangefor a fair and honest review.

This is adorable I love this author and the way they write these cute and honest high school relationships. The art is beatiful as well. My only criticism of this volumes is I wish it was slightly longer to expanded more on the relationship.

Review to come March 12th on blog/other places.

I received this book from Netgalley/the publisher in exchange of an honest review.

I quite liked My Summer of You and My Ultramarine Sky, so of course I had to request this one when I spotted it on Netgalley! I knew that it would be good shounen-ai, one with all the consent and cute moments.

In this one we meet a guy named Eitou (Eitou.. eightou, yes, the poor guy, his real name is different but this is what stuck). He is really tired of all the puns he gets through his life and I couldn't blame him. I mean, it is fun the first time, but getting it through all of your life? Eh, not so much. But what happens when he meets another guy plagued by the number eight? A boy named Hatta also named Hachi. Yep. There we go! I had a bit of a laugh how there were two guys who had the same nickname. What are the odds (then again, we also have a manga with two girls named Nana). I really loved how this started a conversation and I LOVED it even more when things got more and more for them. I really started shipping them and I just loved seeing them get closer and closer. See them find out that while their names/nicknames are what connected them in the first place that there is much more for them to connect. I just loved it! Loved seeing their conversations. Loved their reactions when they saw the other. So cute!

Oh, and plus points to the extra chapter at the end! Plus, the 4koma bits after that! Always love those.

I wasn't such a fan of the drama after the middle-ish of the book, it just was a bit much. I mean, come on, there is probably a reason why and just ask him normally instead of going by what a friend told you. Yes, he normally tells people right of the bat, but can't you just think that maybe there is a reason for why he did this? Geez. Dramalamas. Already glad at least they weren't dating then because otherwise we may have had the dreading third-act-breakup which I had with a passion.

The art was really fun again, I really love the artists style and how she draws characters.

All in all, despite the dramalama just after the middle I did enjoy the book a lot and I found myself rooting for these characters!

Uma das melhores novels que li recentemente, simplesmente maravilhosa. Não consumo muito conteúdo LGBT, mas essa em específico me cativou bastante.

This was such a short and sweet manga! I loved Eito and Hachi, they made such great friends and seeing them both develop romantic feelings for each other was very heartwarming.

Their dynamic was what I have come to expect from most romance mangas, having one character more outgoing and friendly while the other is a little more quiet and reserved, however, I loved that both were second guessing their feelings and struggling somewhat with whether they could say what they actually wanted to be to each other.

It created some much needed tension that definitely helped keep the pacing of the story. I have been enjoying more BL manga the last months and this one will definitely be getting a place on my bookshelf.

Number Call is the kind of manga that I would pick up when I need something really low angst to be able to flip through. It’s the story of two high school boys who both have names that are similar to the word Eight. This connection brings them together and as they start to spend a lot of time together, they start to question where the lines of friendship end and where “something more” begins.

The art style is simple, classic black and white line drawings. It’s what I imagine when I pick up manga. The plot and character development are pretty simple and not super complex original, but classic tropes are classics for a reason. The tone of the story and the art style do have harmony.

This was cute and sweet but ultimately fine. I don’t feel like there was much depth to the story, just a sweet story about a high school meet-cute (as the two MCs both have nicknames related to the number 8), and as such, there’s not a lot else to say about this. Super relate to having a nickname you hate but also can’t get rid of, though.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing a copy of this book.

Lovely, quick read.

Names are such an important part of identity and as someone who rarely goes by their first name I get it.

Akito and Hatta are proper sweethearts, they’re adorable. I love them.

I swear mangas like this make me wish I knew Japanese (maybe that’s a goal to achieve xD)

Thank you NetGalley.

I did not want this one to end 😭😭 it was so cute and wholesome, and I want them to have each other and be happy. Then tension was immaculate, and the banter was adorable. I loved everything about this. I kept turning the page but I genuinely didn’t want this to end!

I need more of this story, pronto!

This was a super sweet and whimsical boy-love manga. The art style was also great. I’ve read a few manga by this author/illustrator and I’ve loved them all. Can’t wait for more :)

Thank you so much, NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for giving me an ARC of this manga!

This single volume of manga tells the story of how the number 8 brings two high schoolers together and the romance that gradually develops between them.

I was really excited to get the opportunity to read this ARC due to the fact that I’ve absolutely loved everything I’ve read by Nagisa Furuya (My Summer of You duology and The Two Lions).

She always does a wonderful job of developing the relationships between the characters without rushing. Even though we don’t spend every day with the characters, we can still feel the passage of time based on how the characters interact with each other. Number Call was no different. With the background being a year of high school, we were able to easily keep up.

I also thought the origin of the two characters’ bond was unique and one that I haven’t seen in a manga before. It was also an interesting look at the Japanese language and characters. Reading the translator notes helped fill in the gaps I may have had concerning the premise due to being someone reading the English translation.

The only hang up I had while reading this volume was that I sometimes became confused with which character was which because some of the secondary characters look very similar to other characters. There were times when I was greatly depending on the main characters using names to know who was who.

Besides this, it was a very satisfying manga that I was able to start and finish in one sitting!!

I got this as an ARC from Netgalley. It is from the creator of My Summer of You, which I really enjoyed, so I was excited to see it available. Unfortunately, it just didn’t really hook me. A lot of little reasons I think. The art style of the characters isn’t distinctive enough, I got a little mixed up with a few of them in some parts. Also, they spend the majority of the time in school but is missing all those fun school tropes like cultural festivals, field trips, sports day, etc. I also felt a lack of romantic elements. I know it’s a one shot so it doesn’t have time to develop a more complex story, but overall I was still hoping for more substance I guess.

2.5 stars

if you like heart stopper by Alice oseman then you might like Number Call by Nagisa Furuya.

This is my first book of Furuya that I have read, its wasn't bad but it also wasn't great. to me it was just another romance book.
I got confused with the side characters as they look just like the main characters to me.

Thank you Netgalley for letting me read this in exchange for a review.

Number call tells a story about two young high-school boys, who met one day and find an immediate connection to each other through their names. This was such a nice, kind and cute read. I loved how the two characters met, and how they kept running into each other, like it was a call from the universe. It is always interesting to see how and when we meet people in our lives, and how these connections can change our lives. The manga deals with certain topics as much as the story requires, and in a very nicely carried out pacing. I would highly recommend this manga to the fans of Heartstopper.

A manga arc! How cool is that! This manga apparently came out way back in 2014 but its translation is only coming out next month and that is amazing because this book is just adorable.

Eito has a name that unfortunately welcomes silly puns... Especially when he's the type of student to score three 88s on tests. He has always disliked his name due to this. But then he meets Hachi, a boy who was born on October 8th and the two of them become friends, partly due to the coincidence of their names being sort of similar and equally punny. They're fairly different from each other but as they spend more and more time together, they learn to appreciate each other's company... Maybe a little more than in a friendly way.

I was scrolling through NetGalley's catalogue searching for something short and sweet to review and stumbled upon this. One thing to know about me is I'm a huge fan of slice of life when it comes to anime and manga (it's almost the only genre that interests me in that field) so I quite literally was kicking and screaming when I found this arc.

This was indeed short and sweet but in the best way possible. Eito and Hachi's friendship was the most wholesome thing ever, it made smile so much my cheeks hurt. Their friendship also felt very natural even though I thought the romance part could've taken a little longer to develop. I also appreciate the side characters because they're drama-free, goofy but supportive friends to our main characters.

The translation also reads really nicely. Obviously, I haven't read the original Japanese version but with manga, sometimes, you can just tell when the translation feels awkward and it wasn't the case here.

I don't know if there are any plans for other volumes of this but if there are, that would be amazing. But I'm still satisfied even it stops here. But I really wouldn't say no to other volumes.

I definitely recommend this to my fellow fans of slice of life romance manga and anime!

Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

This was such a cute standalone BL manga! I've read a bunch of this mangaka's backlist and have yet to come across a volume I didn't like. This story follows two high school students (Eighto & Hachi), who initially bond over the connection their names have to the number 8. Following their little meet cute, the two start to build a sweet friendship (and something more) through cute interactions in the hallway, study sessions in the library, and walks to the train station. This was short, sweet, and to the point. It didn't do anything super unique or different, but it was so cute and I was kicking my feet the whole time. The art style was also super beautiful and nice to look at. I definitely plan on picking up more from this mangaka in the future.

A very cute friends to lovers story revolving around two highschool boys who have a similar nickname.

I liked the characters in this, they were very cute and endearing and I was rooting for both Eito and Hachi. The plot was okay, a little sparce but enough to keep reading and the ending had a satisfying resolution.

However, I think you can tell it was the authors debut as it was well done but just missing something which would make it an engaging read. Especially since I have read their later manga 'The Two Lions' which has a similar concept but done better in my opinion.

Overall still worth the read as it is short and cute. I need to read more of this authors work.
