I always love a good slice-of-life manga. Number Call is charming in its simplicity, it feels like a real story of two schoolmates becoming friends and falling in love.
I think the art was really nice and I would like to see more volumes with these two, maybe in college or life after? It has a similar feeling like "Classmates" but would benefit from more content.
I loved this manga! Eito and Hachi are lovely characters and I want to see more of them if this series continues. The pacing of the story was slower than I expected so I could have used either one more tiny piece of conflict for them to work through or more background with their friends. I felt like during the story I wanted so much more context about their other friendships just to buff up the story more, so the little extras at the end were a nice addition. If we got to see more of that during the actual story this would be a full five star read for me. Ultimately it was a cute relaxing manga and I'd recommend it to others.

This was incredibly mid. I did not feel connected to the characters and the story itself was quite bland. Its a run of the mill BL story with nothing special about it. The end was cute but thats about it.
It's such a sweet BL Manga! I appreciated the length of the Manga as it felt like it was just right without too much fluffing, although I think it would have been a funny idea to do 8 chapters in reference to their names!
Eito and Hachi were very adorable main characters, although at first glance I did have some trouble noticing the difference between these two and their best friends that were shown. I feel as if with other BL Mangas I've read that the sexuality of the main characters is portrayed as a fetish or other characters were outright homophobic, so this was a breath of fresh air. I also fully appreciated the end having some translations for us in regards to Eito's name and the class differences, as that was a bit confusing at first.
I will be picking up a copy for my shelf when it comes out!
This was a pretty nice meet-cute romance manga. I liked how the names of the two characters matched up; I found it cute and funny. I do wish there was more buildup and development for the actual romance between the characters, even when they were just friends I'm used to reading BL romance with more angst, so the wholesomeness in this manga was a good change of pace and plot. I felt a bit underwhelmed by it but I still enjoyed it overall.
Thank you, Kodansha Comics and NetGalley for providing me with this e-ARC.
I just found out that this one is Furuya sensei's first manga. The story is lovely and unique because of the "eight" part. It's very light and easy to understand, yet many emotions are included. The only problem I got while reading was I sometimes couldn't differentiate both side characters (Yokoi and Kisshy) because they look so similar to Eito and Hachi. But I read other manga by Furuya sensei and can say that sensei already passed this problem.
I would recommend this manga to everyone who wants to read a light and sweet boys' love romance.
I received this from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
3.5 ⭐️
this was a really sweet but simple manga. there wasn’t anything super special about it but it still was an enjoyable read! the pairing was very cute and their interactions were funny sometimes too
This was cute enough but deffo could have done with more development. As a standalone there just wasn’t enough time to develop the characters to make the pay off worth it. Also more differentiation would have been nice between the mains and their friends bc they looked similar and I kept getting confused.
But overall, a cute mini story.
A sweet low angst Manga about two high school seniors who bond over their names. It's a very light plot and a quick and easy read.
Number Call is a BL manga that plays on the number eight - specifically how the two main characters have names and nicknames that can be interpreted as a variation of “8”.
We follow Eito and Hatchi (Hatta) as they meet, become friends and realise there’s more to their “friendship” than they originally thought.
This was such a sweet read. It had me giggling and kicking my feet at parts because I’m a certified sucker for clueless romantics. The pacing of the story was perfect for me and the art itself is gorgeous. The panels were very easy to follow and there’s a translation guide available at the end which can definitely be helpful to readers not familiar with certain expressions and characteristics of the Japanese language.
This is an easy recommendation suitable for teen readers and beyond looking for a cosy, heart warming read.
Thank you Netgalley and Kodansha for a copy of this novel in exchange for review.
Eighto grew up hating his name. Sounding exactly like the number "8," he was always picked on about it and teased through his school years. As he approaches the end of his senior year in the liberal arts program, he bumps into a student at his school he's never met. Hatta (or Hachi, the Japanese translation to "8"), a student in the science track, comes crashing into Eighto's life as the two bond over the similarities in their names.
Soon the two find themselves drawn to one another as more than just two buddies with similar names. As the end of the senior year approaches, what will it take for either of the eights to realize their true feelings towards one another?
A heartwarming one-shot manga published next month by Kodansha comics... I really enjoyed this cute little school story with a romantic ending. Eighto comes to realize what his nickname truly means, all it took was for someone in a similar situation as himself. I love their bond and honesty with each other, the open dialogue and art are also pluses. 5 stars.
This was such a cute and easy read. I agree with some of the other reviews that there could have been more sections with additional detail. I really liked their story and could see myself reading more. There is a translation section at the end that could help if you are having difficulties with some of the naming jokes interspersed.
The cover of this book really appealed to me, but reading the description grabbed my attention because I too relate to the connection between the number eight and my name.
Anyways, Nagisa Furuya's Number Call is a bl manga about the power of numbers (specifically the number 8) and names in drawing two highschool students together.
The story has a nice pace for developing the relationship between the characters through their last months of highschool and is mostly just lighthearted and sweet, with some funny moments throughout.
For those not familiar with the Japanese language, the text and translation notes at the end may be helpful for explaining the play on words for the number 8 and the character names.
This is a low angst, teen friendly manga that follows Eito and Hachi, two high school seniors, as their unexpected friendship develops into something more. The art was gorgeous and the panels were easy to read. It was very sweet and slice of life, and the nighttime scenes - despite being in black and white - were still breathtaking.
Some of the scene transitions could have had a little more context, but overall this was an enjoyable read! Definitely one I would purchase a copy of for my collection if prints were available.
This was cute and all, but i kinda wish we had a little bit more to it. I just felt a little underwhelmed by everything. Both characters were adorable and i did really like the relationship, but i want more. Maybe if we had an extra chapter somewhere or something.
Number call follows two high school boys who both have names that are connected with the number 8 and find themselves being drawn back together. The story is very sweet as the two boys navigate the feelings they have for each other while one of them, Eito, struggles to keep a secret that could jeopardize the friendship they've created.
Thank you Kodansha Comics and Netgalley for this eARC. These opinions are my own. A sweet story! Eito has spent his life having people joke about his name because of it’s connection to the number 8. And while he’s gotten used to it he would still prefer people didn’t. Until he meets Hachi whose name also connects to the number 8. The two keep bumping into act other in random places and eventually they start to enjoy their time together. So much so that they are confused about their feelings. But the confusion causes a distance to grow. Will they figure out what they are feeling? This is a super quick read and so cute! I love that they bond over something so small but a relationship blooms from that! Highly recommend!
thank you for letting me read this !!
I liked the story and the characters a lot, eito and hachi reminds me a little like nana and hachi from NANA.
I wish there was more depth on some scenes as I got myself confused at some parts however, I enjoyed reading it !
Thank you for the digital review copy, Netgalley, Kodansha Comics and Nagisa Furuya.
I have read My Summer of You and really enjoy Nagisa's art style and stories.
The Number Call did not disappoint and I really enjoyed the story.
If you want a cute quick read this might be for you!
What a sweet and nice highschool romance 🥰. I love the characters and how the story was created around names and nicknames.
