This manga is such a cute and wholesome read! It is about two schoolboys that casually meet one day and find they have something in common. After that we seem them slowly start to fall in love and everything that implies.
This is not the first maga I read by Nagisa Furuya and the stories never disappoint.
Cute and fluffy read. I don't think the gimmick in the story translates all that well into English but a sweet read nonetheless.
is it true this is the mangaka's first manga? wonderful. the play on the number eight is so cute. they were meant to be! very sweet story, and the art is great.
๐๐ถ๐ฎ๐ฃ๐ฆ๐ณ ๐๐ข๐ญ๐ญ was such a refreshing bl manga read for me! Especially for a high school setting with a meet-cute situation set up. I've been looking for a new slow burn, friends-to-lovers story like this lately and really just flew through this one.
Hachi & Eito have something in common: their names each represent the number 8. Though it may seem very random, it becomes a cute thread throughout the story (and even a slight conflict for the characters at one point?!) Though this seemingly-random commonality, our MMCs become friends and maybe something more... I thought the slow burn, pining on Eito's end was told really well. Everything felt subtle but in a way that kept me very interested to see how things would pan out between the two before the conclusion of their time in high school.
Overall, the story and their pacing just felt so laid back and approachable. And I loved Hachi & Eito's dynamic. I would read more of them if this unfortunately wasn't just a one shot but alas that's how it goes!
For fans of high school, bl romance manga like ๐๐ข๐ด๐ข๐ฌ๐ช & ๐๐ช๐บ๐ข๐ฏ๐ฐ and ๐๐ฉ๐ช๐ด ๐๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ง๐ถ๐ญ ๐๐ฆ๐ข๐ด๐ฐ๐ฏ ๐๐ช๐ต๐ฉ ๐ ๐ฐ๐ถ.
Nagisa Furuyaโs work is always a win! A win for the slow burn girlies, a win for all of the quiet, little moments that can lead you to love. Her stories are a warm hug on a cold night and are more about the journey than the destination, and I love them!
Number Call, is the story of two high school boys with a humorous similarity, their name can both be โreadโ as the number 8 in Japanese. This one odd similarity, and their increasingly but totally coincidental encounters in the hallways of school & the library light a spark that slowly moves them from friends to something more.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the opportunity to read an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
**I received a free digital copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review**
This is an utterly charming manga! The story, the discovery of a place where both main characters belong...I absolutely love it. A part of me wishes I could see more about the two leads, but an even bigger part of me is screaming that this glimpse into their world is already perfectly contained.
I liked the art, but some characters looked too similar, which was sometimes confusing. Overall, I enjoyed it as a sweet and low-angst standalone.
I always will be a sucker for a meet cute story. Our two MMC meet by chance learning their names/nicknames both share relation to the number 8. The premise of the story is cute but the pacing felt a little off, I wanted more tension and build up of emotions but it felt like a light switch went off and everything was just happening.
A cute meet cute story but a series I likely would not continue.
Meh. For some reason this manga just didn't spark my emotions. It felt like there were a lot of filler panels and the slow buildup just didn't have a *spark* for me. Maybe it's because the language puns/mishaps don't translate directly? But even beyond that, I just didn't feel enough chemistry between the two leads.
It's also worth mentioning that the characters all look very similar. Eito Hachi's friend both have dark hair; Hachi and Eito's friend both have light hair, with only subtle style differences. This made it hard to track who was in some of the scenes and made me feel less attached to the main love interests.
Netgalley Read Now my beloved!!
THIS WAS SO CUTE AAAAAA!!
Loved it loved it loved it. Loved everything about it.
The perfect blend of the final year of high school, finding out who you are and experiencing first love. I miss them already, I want more.
The only issue I had was I think with the Netgalley app? There were blue and red guide lines on the page and I couldnโt figure out how to turn them off but it wasnโt a huge issue.
A few cute friends to dating about 2 Asian boys who have similar names. One has the grumpy, standoff-ish personality and the other is all sunshine. Just enough drama to make you see it through to the end.
There would definitely be people who like this book, its just not personally my thing. I found it rather slow despite being rather short.
This was such a quick and sweet read. Loved the main characters and their friends. I only wish it was longer, so I can enjoy these characters and their world a little more.
I will surely be picking up this author's other work.
I am a fan of Nagisa Furuya's work, mostly due to how laid back it is. This was her Japanese debut title so I'm really happy that it is finally available in English (10 freaking years later). The story revolves around 2 boys, both of whom have nicknames involving the number 8. Eito is an introvert while Hachi seems more outgoing but they soon become friends. At least until Eito realizes that it's not friendship he wants from Hachi. To be honest the story is a pretty basic and straightforward "boy meets boy, boy falls in love with boy, boy freaks out and distances himself from other boy, other boy realizes he's in love with boy, boys make up, the end" story that is really typical of Furuya and non-mature BL in general. But it was relatable in a lot of ways and the art work is exactly what I've come to expect from this mangaka. My only real complaint is that you have to read all the way to the end of the bonus chapter to see one single kiss and that is all you get, though again, this is pretty typical, especially for a one shot. Anyway, it's worth a read.
I loved the manga.
The characters slowly get to know each other and develop feelings for one another in such a sweet and adorable way.
They met because of their name, but we see throughout the manga that they have much more in common.
There's no drama (thank you very much), and it focuses on the characters' feelings and them understanding it.
It really is a beloved book in which we feel the love with them.
Akito 'Eito' Tachinana and Tomoya 'Hachi' Hatta are drawn into an unlikely friendship, despite their different studies and classrooms, by their similar nicknames both involving the number eight.
The only complaint I have is that some of the characters are drawn very similarly - Eito's best friend looks like Hachi and Hachi's best friend looks similar to Eito- which was sometimes confusing.
Number Call was a quick and cute one shot! This manga is very light on the BL and builds more on the friendship relationship of the two boys that any explicit BL scenes. It's very chaste. A cute and cozy read for any school romance lover or fan of Nagisa Furuya's other works.
An absolutely adorable story of two boys bonding over their name and eventually becoming closer than friends. This story was a very sweet and cute romance and how they meet over and over again clearly looking for excuses to keep talking to each other was just so adorable. This manga is a must read for any queer manga lover especially for those that want a more quieter and wholesome type of story.
I've recently started getting into manga's and graphic novels and this one did not disappoint. I think the story was cute and heartwarming, although I definitely wished for more scenes between Eito and Hatta. I'd love to see more of their study sessions or just interaction of them getting closer, especially after they officially get together.
One thing I do worry about, because it confused me at first, was differentiating the characters better. I absolutely love the art style and I'm not sure if this will be printed in black and white or not, but I was very confused at first with Eito and Kisshy. I saw the cover art of the eBook was color and the brothers (or cousins?) had a different color hair but honestly, they were hard to differentiate too.
Thank you so much for allowing me to read this though. I really enjoyed it, especially as an introduction back to manga!
This was adorable! The art is not anything out of the ordinary, but it's nice, and the story is pretty straightforward. I liked that the melodrama was low and the characters were very cute. I enjoyed this!
A sweet story about two high schoolers who share a strange connexion with the number 8, leading them both to unexpectedly become closer. Feels very slice of lifey, very wholesome. Overall a cute little one shot with clean art, a clever premise and a cute but standard plot.
