I love everything this book teaches kids! From how eating healthy and brushing your teeth is good for your body to maintaining healthy friendships. It teaches kids to ask questions, to finding trustworthy adults to ask them and confide in them to. Overall just a great book for children to learn things about themselves and why it’s important to do certain things, even if they don’t feel like it. (Ahem, brushing teeth, which is a struggle in my household. Hopefully this book will help!)
I was initially drawn to the illustrations on the cover of this beautiful book. When thinking about adding books to my classroom library, I always aim to ensure that the pupils of my classroom are reflected in those books and I found this to be true in the illustrations of this book.
The concept of this book also drew me in. I work in a school for socio-economically disadvantaged pupils and we are always looking for ways to encourage healthy behaviours. I was thrilled to see this book focusing on a large range of healthy behaviours, including social interactions, rather than just focusing on food and exercise.
The layout of text was easy to digest and I feel like it would appeal to my students. The level of information was balanced well.
I think this book is an essential resource to have in a classroom and I look forward to adding it to my own classroom library.
This book tackles a wide number factors involved in self care, and explains them thoroughly and in language children can understand. These are skills many adults still need to work on, and learning to look inward at a younger age will help set children up for success.
The illustrations showcase a variety of different children from all sorts of backgrounds, and the text generally does a good job of being inclusive of persons with different abilities and circumstances. (I would say the only area in which it is possibly lacking is that certain suggestions may not account for children/families with any sort of finical hardship, though that would be difficult to include in an already packed booked. Suggestions such as being sure to eat breakfast, or to see a therapist are things not every family can afford, and are beyond a child's ability to influence/change. Apart from that though I believe they did an amazing job of being inclusive.)
They speak of self care as it applies to physical and mental health, as well as in our interactions with friends, family, and the world around us. As an introvert- I particularly appreciated the bit about alone time being important as well, a point I feel is often not showcased to children.
It is quite long for the intended age group. I am not certain it would hold every childs' interest for the full read, so that should be kept in mind. If reading aloud I would recommend splitting it up.
Alovely book to help children learn the importance of self care.
This book is beautifully illustrated and talks about the ways we can look after ourselves as well as the importance of boundaries, talking to someone we trust and knowing how to label our emotions.
Wonderful Me: A First Guide to Taking Care of Yourself
by Nancy Shapiro
a good social emotional learning resource for elementary education. It is a good resource for parents as well. The book shows page by page each aspect of personal care that a child can do for themselves. It walks about diet, relationships, and hygiene.
This is a wonderful book for kids about taking care of yourself. Your Body, sleep, senses, health (including mental and physical), movement and learning and how to check in with yourself and so much more. This has fun illustrations and is all inclusive of abled and differently abled kids, which you don’t often see.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this advance reader copy of this wonderful book.
I feel like this picture book has the best intentions and a lot of potential, but it did feel tedious - and if it feels like that for me, then I am not sure how entertained it could keep a kid. I feel like the target audience is... unsure too.
The illustrations are okay, but nothing that stands out or adds to the story.
This is a book I believe every classroom should have and I’ll certainly be making a purchase! I love the way it explores every aspect of self care in an accessible and child friendly fashion. The beautiful illustrations really being the text to life too!
This book was such a happy surprise. I was immediately impressed with the illustrations and the font choice. It feels very cheery and readable. The tone is warm and encouraging. In addition to offering information and helpful suggestions, it also asks questions, giving kids a chance to think about how the subject just discussed might apply to them. This book covers important topics like boundaries, respect, feelings, communication, health, and other self-care matters in healthy, accessible ways. Because they're broken down into sections, it's easy to handle one topic at a time, if you want to read a small piece and then talk about it together. The characters shown in the illustrations are diverse: hearing, visual, and mobility aids are all pictured without being a primary focus.
As a parent, I really liked the messages and lessons throughout this book. At first, I thought it would be kind of like a story book but it's really a book filled with little lessons on each page. Some of the lessons include: health & taking care of your body, feelings & friends, communication & getting help, etc.
I recommend this book to any parent. I have 3 children and each one could use different lessons or if this book right now a they learn to navigate social situations.
This lovely children's book was a hit with my 2.5 year old toddlers. Self-care (both physical and mental) is important at any age. I love the pages on boundaries and expecting respect. Wonderful Me also has excellent illustrations to match the quality content. Will be buying a copy when this comes out for sure!
This is an awesome books for showing and telling little ones how to take care of their body. Even reading it as an adult, it was an educational reminder to things we already know but may over look or not think about daily. I love all the illustrations! This book is filled with alot of great information.
As an adult reading this book, I can honestly say that I learned a lot from this book. It is suited for kids but Adults can learn a lot and how to be patient and kind with their children. I liked all the illustrations and how everything was explained in detail with a child in mind as the reader. The type was a bit small and the book was a little lengthy for a child to sit still and read. This did not deter me away from enjoying this book though. I recommend reading this with one's child as it can be a bonding experience. It could help to cope with emotions and understand one's child's behavior. It provides activities that help children learn as they read. The activity involves drawing. I thought it was cute and fun for a child. It allows them to express their creativity while learning to understand their emotions etc.
Love Always, Catherine
I received an advanced review copy for free. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Wonderful Me is a beautiful and informative book for children of a variety of ages to learn about self care, with a focus on body, relationships and feelings. The text is punchy, motivating and chunked for ease of accessibility. Concepts are explained in an easy to understand way and are linked to helpful strategies.
There’s a lovely thread of normalisation and validation throughout the book, gently balanced with encouraging children to take steps to increase their autonomy and independence through self care. The cover was bright and welcoming, and drew me in. The illustrations are full of energy and inspiration, displaying a diverse group of children, and catering for different experiences.
I think this is a great book for young kids to enjoy with their grownups, and slightly older kids to keep as a quick reference for tips. Honestly, us grownups could also use this as a helpful refresher, given self care is a lifelong learning!
Thank you Quarto Publishing Group and NetGalley for a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed are my own.
This book covers it all. I like the simple explanations that include important details. The simple but colorful illustrations that help add to the meaning of the pages. All of these topics are so important. I will recommend this book for caregivers to use at home to build a foundation of the conversations we have at school in our social emotional learning lessons.
I liked this book about self care . It taught you about your body ,relationships, and feelings and how this affects each other .It was divided into the sections and had good illustrations. It taught how self care affects you as an adult .The book did not discriminate as it had a child in a wheelchair which can be common today .I did think the book had a little too much in it and could have been shortened.Thank you net galley for this copy.
Love, love, love this book for our homeschool. It not only give a kid friendly definition of the word, it also gives examples. The pictures keep the kids entertained as well.
Thank you Nancy Shapiro and NetGalley for the ARC of this book
This book covered so many important topics that it are important to teach children and continually discuss with them. I felt like there was a lot of text and that maybe this book wouldn’t be for reading in one sitting from start to end because of that. But reading one section at a time and then talking about it would be really great and bring the lessons from the book to life. I would buy this for my friends with children because it covered so many great topics that we should be discussing with young people. The graphics were also a nice touch as were the reflection questions throughout.
This is a cute book for second to fourth grade for social emotional learning and taking care of your body/mind
Myself and my almost 8 year old really enjoyed this book. The illustrations are stunning and very useful for little ones who can’t read yet, they still are able to understand the gist of the book. It goes over a wide range of self care and life lessons. I really like all the diverse representation also. I will absolutely search for a physical copy of this book when published. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this advanced copy!
