This was quite the wild ride. I really liked the back and forth POV between the two main characters and the jumping timeline from the past and present. I did listen to the audiobook and wish that the characters were voice by different people because it was a bit hard to keep the POVs straight with the same narrator until you got to know each character's distinct personality and "voice." I found this to be pretty evenly paced until the end which I found to be a tad lackluster compared to the rest of the book. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
In Michele Campbell's The Intern novel, we are immersed in the world stocked with vibrations of the main character- Madison Rivera, who gets a dream job that she always wanted to work with Judge Kathryn Conroy. Nevertheless, the evil lurking in Madison’s heart could both cost her the job and, ultimately, the life. Her troubled younger brother, Danny, has been detained and it has been determined that the Judge Conroy will try his case. However, this is making her sad.
As a storyteller, Campbell's craft shows clearly in "The Intern". The plot develops with great clarity and focus, leaving the reader hanging on each edges from beginning to end. And while Rivera’s portrayal is impressive, the character development seems to be one of this movie’s most significant assets. This is particularly noticeable in how it depicts Madison as a complex and enduring protagonist. Judge Kathryn Conroy is as mysterious as the main character till the last pages of the book whereas his motives remain a conundrum until the end.
The author's writing style is not merely engaging and immersive, rather as readers, we are plunged mania-stricken into a dualistic world of glamour and corruption. Nonetheless, although the novel has perfected the discipline of building up the suspense and maintaining the tension, it has some sluggishness in places, thus spoiling the whole show.
Nevertheless, this shortcoming does impede the scope of the story. However, the overall storyline remains very interesting and until the climax, it will make the readers guess until the very end. The book written by Michele Campbell is an absolutely enchanting thriller whose main focus is the main themes of disloyalty, honor and the effects of secrets that are concealed. As Tesla says, in the "game of power", there is anything but decorum, but who wins and who loses. In the end, readers will make up their minds on which side their views are.
The Intern by Michele Campbell
(Narrated by Sarah Mollo-Christensen)
Interesting story plot with the legal industry background! Something fun and dark to read, which satisfied to those who like a story with dark secrets.
I enjoyed the part of the relationship between the intern and the judge most. The judge was someone that the intern admired. A chance to be a pet sitter, more secrets the intern would find out. Meanwhile the judge was related to the intern’s brother who was accused for a crime…
The gripping plot and complicated relationship among the story kept me guessing what happened next. The narrator played the characters very well, especially the Intern. I could feel she’s separate to save her brother!
Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for my copy.

Oh my gosh I literally was up all night listening to this. It was so worth the lack of sleep. I started reading this novel early in the day and could not force myself to stop. It was so good that I wish I could go back and force myself to slow down, reread it and savor every moment. I loved this novel.
Unfortunately I've had to DNF this audiobook, it really feels like this book is in desperate need of an edit. I'm enjoying the plot but it's a very frustrating read as there's so many unnecessary information included and repeated. It's exhausting feeling like I'm reading everything twice and I just want to know what's happened. My issues with this novel could be because I'm not reading the published version so there are more edits taking place.
However I'm enjoying the narration of this thriller it's very dramatic and addicting. It's very well researched but the main character constantly makes decisions then changes her mind and flip flops.
Although I'm not finishing the audiobook I would consider reading the physical book once it is published as I am enjoying some aspects.
An engaging page-turner, easily deserving of 4 stars!
Told through two distinct perspectives—Madison Rivera, a Harvard law student, and Kathryn Conroy, a respected judge and professor—this thriller kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. Kathryn, once Madison's idol, is revealed to have a dark past, leading to a series of unexpected twists and turns.
What sets this book apart is its unpredictability. While we know who the antagonists are from the outset, we absolutely do not know the path we will end up on in this journey. Madison, initially a starry eyed believer of the justice system, is forced to confront corruption within the judiciary when her brother is framed for drug dealing. As she grapples with this reality, she finds herself interning under Kathryn, only to uncover even more startling revelations.
I appreciated the plausibility of the storyline; nothing felt TOO far-fetched, and the cat-and-mouse chase kept the adrenaline pumping. However, I found myself more drawn to Madison's storyline than Kathryn's, despite the latter being central to the narrative. Nonetheless, the book left a lasting impression, and I devoured it in one sitting, switching between audiobook and ebook.
In conclusion, this book is a memorable read that I highly recommend. A special thanks to NetGalley for providing me with a complementary audiobook!
I wasn't sure which direction this was going, and certainly didn't foresee the crazy turn of events. I enjoyed the alternating chapter changes between Katherine and Maddison. Although the story was totally far-fetched and character decisions were frustrating at times, I enjoyed it and listened with rapt attention.
This is my first book by this author, and after finishing The Intern, it will not be my last.
In a nut shell, it’s an unputdownable legal thriller. We follow Madison Rivera who is a student at Harvard Law School. Diligent and incredibly determined brings her to the attention of her law professor, Judge Kathryn Conroy. A working judge who asks Madison to be her new intern.
Filled with secrets, deceit and corruption, kept me turning those pages. Well plotted, great characters and clever dialogue made this an addictive, highly entertaining book. Many thanks to NetGalley and Harper Collins UK Audio for the ALC.
A young Harvard student get an intern for a top judge and she can’t wait. Madison is so happy, but it’s not want she thought. Her brother has been arrested for drugs and the judge is her boss. Jen has secrets from her past and it’s still haunted her.
I listened to the audiobook and it was really well read. The narrator was easy to listen to and kept me focused on the story.
Thanks to Net galley and the publishers for a copy.
A good pacey novel dealing with corruption at the highest levels of the world of American justice. I don't tend to enjoy this genre but this one kept me listening right to the very end
Thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin's Press, and Michele Campbell for the ARC in return for an honest review.
After a slow start, this book had me invested; listening at home, work and anywhere I could get away with wearing headphones. The pace was perfect and I thoroughly enjoyed the two point of views throughout the book. The characters were well developed and I was able to easily follow along with who was who. I could imagine this being adapted to film (and would be eager to watch!).
This was the first book I have listened to by Michele Campbell and will definitely pick up any book of hers in future. My only criticism was with the narration; I struggled at first but then was able to tolerate it by listening at 1.75x speed. The tone felt almost AI and was grating to listen to, even at 1.5x speed.
DNF at 17%
I had high hopes for this one but I just couldn’t connect to the story. I just didn’t care about the main character or her brother 🙈
I have only just got into Audiobooks after struggling initially a few years ago.
I have now realised that my audiobook listening is really dependant on the narrator & type of book.
The intern is an amazing read, it’s the first time in ages that a book has completely gripped me, I cannot put it down.
There are so many twists and turns and the book is so well written, the storyline is engaging and the characters leave you wanting to know more and desperately waiting for their next chapter to find out more about their crazy and mysterious lives.
5* review from me.
A new author for me to discover too, this is the first of Michelle’s books I’ve read/listened to.
I will defo be checking out more.

This novel started off a little slow, with Harvard student Madison appearing naive and a little too work-focused, but as the plot thickens and she finds herself entangled in her brother Danny's wrongful imprisonment, the character softens, making her more relatable and a far stronger protagonist.
The section of the novel which is in Kathy's POV is especially interesting, with it unravelling much of the dark side of law enforcement. This was, personally, my favourite section and I found my allegiances switching throughout.
There is quite a bit of legal jargon at times but it is nothing that isn't explained or cannot be worked out and therefore is not detrimental to the story.
My only complaint is the inclusion of Madison's ex-boyfriend and his new girlfriend - while their involvement makes sense given who her father is, their interactions always felt forced and added little to the narrative.
The Intern started off slow but it wasn’t long about upping the pace. It’s told from the point of view of 2 of the main characters - Judge Conroy who also delves into her backstory and the other is Madison Rivera. There are some interesting surprises along the way but they work well. It’s a well developed storyline along with well developed characters. The storyline moved at a steady pace and the narration was both engaging and entertaining. Enjoyed it and it definitely held my attention throughout…
Thanks to Netgalley and Harper Collins UK Audio for the opportunity to listen to and review #TheIntern
This book started off slow for me, but I became invested about halfway through. There was more focus on Kathryn (the judge) in my opinion, so this could've just as easily been called The Judge instead of The Intern.
This story is told from two POVs, the judge and the intern. I enjoyed getting to know them both. Kathryn's background story helped bring the why together. This was a good legal thriller, and I enjoyed it once it picked up. It kept me intrigued to want to know what was going to happen.
Sarah Mollo-Christensen did well on her delivery with the narration. She fit each character perfectly, and I enjoyed her voice.

Maddison a Harvard law student lands a job as an intern for her hero Judge Kathryn Conroy. after bonding with the judge in a conversation she tells the Judge shes an only child but the problem is her troubled younger brother Danny has been arrested, and Conroy is the judge on his case.
When Danny goes missing after accusing the judge of corruption, Madison’s realises the Judge is not what she seems,
This leads Maddison into the world of bent police , solicitors and far too many secrets and lies
It also puts them both in danger
A good overall listen

Blurb
A young Harvard law student falls under the spell of a charismatic judge in this timely and thrilling novel about class, ambition, family and murder.
Madison Rivera lands the internship of a lifetime working for Judge Kathryn Conroy. But Madison has a secret that could destroy her career. Her troubled younger brother Danny has been arrested, and Conroy is the judge on his case.
When Danny goes missing after accusing the judge of corruption, Madison’s quest for answers brings her deep into the judge’s glamorous world. Is Kathryn Conroy a mentor, a victim, or a criminal? Is she trying to help Madison or use her as a pawn? And why is somebody trying to kill her?
As the two women circle each other in a dangerous cat-and-mouse game, will they save each other, or will betrayal leave one of them dead?
My Opinion
Madison Rivera and Kathryn Conroy both have things to hide, will they be able to work together to keep themselves safe? This was a book then I went into without knowing too much about it, but it was a gripping, page-turner. This is the first book I have read by Michele Campbell, but the writing was just lovely. There is a large number of characters in this book, that do make it slightly complicated - especially when more of the backstory is revealed, but for me this was an enjoyable read.
Rating 4/5
i thoroughly enjoyed this and was hooked from the beginning!
the overall plot was great and i liked the suspense of trying to figure out what is going on from Madison's POV, and i really really liked getting Kathy's POV to understand her side as well. i adored the writing as it kept me gripped throughout and the narrator did an absolutely amazing job! there were no instances that i had to go back to try and understand what she was saying or got lost. sometimes i have this issue where i tend to space out whilst listening to an audiobook, but the narrator did so well that it did not happen to me once and that is unheard of for me.
the characters were amazingly written and i really liked Madison, but the moment i got Kathy's POV, she was all i could think about. that's not to say that i didn't continue liking Madison's POV, but Kathy's one was my favourite. i think both characters and their personalities complimented each other well and it was a sound dynamic.
now the ending left me feeling a bit anti-climatic. it happened a tad bit too quickly and i really wanted to see the certain justice being served. BUT it was a sound book and i had a great time!
4.5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
✨ There are 2 types of perspective in this story. One is madison who is he intern and studying law while she wants to know what happen to his brother who’s in jail. She needs to get him out and to prove he is innocent.
Second person is Judge Catherine, or Cathy. Who ask madison to look after her cat and house while she was away.
And some shocking revelations with the judge past .
✨ Story was slow . It has a lot of point A to D. Till to go actually part . This is some past storylines that needs to be read or else you will get lost.
✨ Endings was abit confusing that’s why it missed a small chunk of star. But definitely worth to read.
✨ Thankyou netgalley and macmillan audio for the arc copy of this book for a honest review.
