Another great book buy this author and one that shows the strength, courage and even fear but definitely bravery of two young women, sisters, who try to help and save as many people as they can. This is a WOW of a book and one I just couldn't put down.
The writing is wonderful, the story is heart-breaking yet fills you with hope. Loved all the characters in this story as they each brought something different to the story. A book I delved into and didn't put down until I got to the final page. I look forward to seeing what this author writes next.
Thank you NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
This book was a DNF for me. I got to 30% and decided it was not for me. Hopefully it will be a good fit for someone else!
Soraya, has great writing skills. I love how she manages to combine both fact and fiction to achieve great results.
This book had me hooked from the start to finish. The characters were strong and believable. I personally think it's good that authors write about German's who were against the Third Reich and their beliefs.
The Berlin Sisters is the first book I have read by Soraya Lane and I was pulled in from the very first page. I will definitely recommend this book to others and look forward to reading more books by this author.
Another brilliant story by this author and makes a refreshing change of being set in Germany as most of the ones I have read recently have been in Italy. The three women Ava, Hanna and Eliana are great characters and it brings home the evil of the Nazi's and how they whitewashed people's minds, and the amazing bravery of the people who stood up to them. A compelling read that will stay with you
It’s been a minute since I last read a WW2 novel so I was excited to pick up this one. This was different than any other WW2 historical fiction I’ve read because instead of it taking place inside the camps it takes place in Germany and instructions of it being about the Resistance in France or England, it’s about the Resistance in Germany; a Resistance that was comprised of civilians against the government, but also SS officers who were also against Hitler’s plan.
It’s 1943 and Ava Müller is a proud German. Her father is a high ranking SS officer, she works for Joseph Goebbels, she’s engaged to be married after the war to the love of her life, and she fully believes in anything her beloved Führer says. When she comes home to her parents’ country house one weekend she is shocked to discover a Jewish family hiding in the attic and even more shocked to find out her parents and sister are part of a Resistance cell to try to save Jewish people. She knows she has to turn in anyone who goes against Hitler’s laws, but how can she turn in her family? She agrees not to say anything. But shortly after, her fiancé tells her how he has been promoted to the overseer of Ravensbruk and unbeknowningly pushes Ava to the side of the Resistance when he confirms Hitler’s Final Solution and sings its praises. She uses her position as Goebbels’ secretary to help the Resistance try to bring down Hitler. Hanna, Ava’s sister, does her part has a nurse by smuggling Jewish children to other Resistance members who will get them out of Germany. Both of them know they’re risking their lives, but it’s a risk worth taking if it means saving innocent people.
I read a lot of WW2 fiction and I always love when a book in this genre gives me a different perspective. I actually never realized there were a few SS officers who realized what was happening was horrific and were willing to risk their lives to save others. While the family is fiction, the events Ms. Lane wrote about actually happened and she did a phenomenal job wearing fact and fiction together.
Thank you to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for an advanced copy of this. I am so sorry it took me so long to get to it. The Berlin Sisters hit the shelves in May.
Definitely satisfying to read!
As I picked this book based on the genre and the blurb, I didn't put that much of an expectation on the story. Yet, this book has left me in awe, I'm glad I have chosen to read this book. It has a very great depiction of the situation during World War II and Hitler's regime, from the tension of the oppressive Nazis to the heartfelt interaction of the characters within.
However, I must admit that after I read a lot on this type of genre and topic, I have a grasp on how the story will go and it made me a bit of unmotivated to continue reading this book. But here I am writing my review, astonished by how the story goes! I will recommend this book to my fellows' history fiction enthusiasts out there,
Another story which while fiction, rings with truth. Soraya brings each character to life in a way which allows us to share the emotions of the time: the horror, hatred and anger side by side with joy, love and hope.
I love the way that Soraya brings the time period to life and allows the reader to interact with the real plausible creation of a historically accurate backstory. Through all this the reader is transported into Berlin during the war years and allow the reader to come alongside and walk with the people and events.
The book comes with a warning of what can happen when evil is given the power to enter society. Thank you for this book, with its emotions and truth. All is not as it seems, and it is a reminder that in the darkest of days, there are always good people who step out and step up. Many of these heroes never get or want the thanks that are due them.
Thank you to Net Galley and Lake Union Publishing for allowing me to read this book in exchange for this honest freely given. review.
Thanks to Netgalley, Lake Union Publishing and Soraya M. Lane, for the chance to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Wow. What a beautifully written story. I absolutely loved it. It was heartbreaking and inspiring at the same time.
I was drawn into the story immediately. Soraya's writing style is very compelling, it just makes you keep turning page after page.
I read a few historical novels set in war time, and The Berlin Sisters is definitely one of the best I've read in a while.
Ava, Hanna and Eliana were great main characters. They were all strong, determined and interesting women.
The Berlin Sisters is the first book I've read from this author, but it won't be the last.
I'll remember this book for a long time to come. I very highly recommend.
5 Stars from me. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
Soraya has created a WWII story that shows heart and heartache on both sides of the war. I love her work but I think this one had exceeded my expectations. A story that remains on your mind throughout your day until you read the end. Outstanding story-telling that keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the book!
I couldn't get enough of this story. I love Soraya's books and I find myself doing research once I put the book down just to learn more about WWII. There is a constant beat within you as you read, not knowing what is about to happen and you can clearly feel the tension on both sides of the war. You can trust no one including family and neighbors. Some sacrifices will break your heart, some events will make you angry, but more than anything. . . this war surprises me that a whole country can allow themselves to get so angry and drive themselves to genocide.
A story of how one family chose to make a difference in the war and help those they could even though their hearts were breaking at their own losses. A family that chose right from wrong no matter the consequences.
Remarkable story! I obtained a copy of this book from another source other than Amazon and wanted to post my thoughts. Read the book, do some research, and hope we never ever allow history to repeat itself.
I love WW2 fiction and this did not disappoint me! Lots of suspense as both main characters deal with such a scary time in history, I was inspired by this book and its events, many based on true events in history. Can these young women get through the war and a dangerous society of deep prejudices and fear? Like Anne Frank, a Jewish family is hiding in secret and comes under the care and mercy of a German girl Ava, and her family, who work against the Nazi party. The author weaves history and story so well together that you get to see things from both sides.
Thank you to the author and publisher for this arc.
This book just captures you from the first few pages. Set in 1943 in Berlin, Ava Muller has followed the party line, joining the youth party from a young age and now works as a secretary in the offices of Joseph Goebbels who is second to Hitler himself. Her father Karl also works there, him being close to Hitler also. While working in Berlin Ava shares an apartment with her sister Hanna who is a nurse, occasionally they return to the family home in the country. It is on one such visit that Ava discovers her old neighbours the Goldman family living in the attic. Ava is more upset that she is the last to know about this. As the story evolves Ava discovers just how much her family are involved with the resistance movement and will she be drawn in herself?
It’s hard to believe that love can grow through those terrible years, that part was covered beautifully.
The factual element was so informing, I really enjoyed it. Reading about Hanna and Ethan tears flowed.
I was introduced to my first Soraya book by Netgalley and haven’t hesitated to read them since. Thank you.
In this World War II historical fiction novel, readers follow sisters Ava and Hanna (as well as their parents) living in Berlin in 1943. Ava works for Joseph Goebbels and their father, a high-ranking Reich official, while Hanna works as a nurse. However, Ava has no idea that her loyal parents and sister are working with a resistance group and hiding a childhood friend, Eliana Goldman, and her family in the attic. All too aware of the dangers of being caught resisting the regime, Ava must choose where her loyalty lies: with her family or with her country. Alternating between Hanna, Ava, and Eliana’s perspectives, Lane creates a striking and horrifying image of life in Berlin under the Nazis and the dangers of resistance. The three women, all with different stories of fear, loss, and resistance, have a strong bond with each other and their families, and readers will be caught up in the stress, adrenaline, and terror of fighting against the Nazis at the heart of their empire. The sisters and Eliana are the heart of this story, and Lane’s characters are all complex, challenging, kind, and human. A strong historical fiction novel full of incredible detail, wonderful characters, and high stakes, readers of the genre are sure to enjoy this book.
Such a great story with a different perspective from war. I cried multiple times out of sadness, love, happiness… the entire range of emotions was felt. Highly recommend if you enjoy historical fiction.
The Berlin Sisters, by Soraya M. Lane, is mislabeled as "women's fiction" and "romance." While it does tell the emotional story of two sisters during WWII and there is a bit of romance, it should be categorized as historical fiction. Based on several historical events, it portrays Nazi Germany from the rarely considered point of view of Germans, some of whom were powerful allies of Hitler and others part of the Resistance. The characters and plot are compelling from the first page to the last. Without any preaching, the story also illuminates the power of misinformation, herd mentality, and authoritarian regimes. Thank you to NetGalley, Lake Union Publishing and the author for the opportunity to read a digital ARC. It was a privilege.
I am a huge fan of Soraya Lane and have read all of her books! Each one becomes my new favourite, and The Berlin Sisters is no exception. I read this book over the course of 2 days and didn’t want it to end.
Set in WWII Germany, the characters are well developed and I was so invested in their stories that I found it hard to put the book down. Soraya has once again woven facts into the story and, through sisters Ava and Hanna, takes the reader on an informative, emotional, heartbreaking journey in what is a plausible tale. There were many Germans who didn’t agree with the war or the treatment of those who were deemed unworthy of a place in society, and it is hard to comprehend the enormous amount of fear that people had to learn to live with. Through reading this story, I felt some of that fear and despair, but I also felt the hope, strength, and resilience of the characters.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys WWII historical fiction with strong female characters and a touch of romance. I would love to see this book adapted to film!
Thank you to NetGalley, Lake Union Publishing, and Soraya Lane for a digital copy in exchange for an honest review.
Soraya M. Lane never disappoints me. Her books are always very realistic and heartbreaking. Touching and so emotional. To say she is a great author is an understatement. She writes historical fiction like no one else can. Her books will make you stop and think. Hopefully make you want things to be better. They always make me have so many tears...
This is the story of a family. Mainly two sisters. A family that takes heart in helping a family who is in grave danger. A strict German family who help a Jewish family. A hight ranking German Officer who helps this family.
How this family finally came together to help their friends made my heart soar. I was happy to read about a good and decent German family that helped. Even though I know that it was most likely the only family that the father and mother helped. The Mullers consisted of A father, mother and two daughters. Hanna and Ava. Hanna had already been doing a lot of work helping get Jewish children out of harms way. To safe places. The family they help, the Goldmans are the parents and their son David and daughter, Eliana.
Hanna was a nurse and also worked driving an ambulance. The perfect cover to help children. Ava had no idea what her family were doing until she found the Goldman family living in her childhood home in the attic.
Through a lot of horror these two girls manage to keep helping others. Once Hanna and her parents make Ava understand that they had all been so deceived by Hitler and what he stood for she was ready to help. Ava worked as a personal secretary to a very high ranking Nazi official. She's also engaged to a strong Nazi. But she learns to hate him. With good reason.
How the people just turned their backs on lifelong friends always makes me stop and think. How do you do that. See them dragged out of their homes. Beaten, murdered. Women brutally raped. All of them treated less than animals. Many sent to camps never to be seen again. How do you justify that. I don't believe I could. I hope I couldn't. I understand fear can make you do things you would not normally do but still... Millions where murdered.
This book kept me on edge in quite a few places. Not like a thriller would but like horrific history does. It made me weep for people that I know who would probably do just this if they had too or some if they could. I never underestimate humanity anymore. I've heard things from people that I thought I knew that made my heart ache. But surely if it came down to it they could not. Surely they would have a conscience and heart. Surely....
Thank you #NetGalley, #SorayaMLane, #LakeUnion, for this ARC. This is my own true thoughts about this heartbreaking story.
Five huge stars.
Thank you net galley for the advanced reader copy of The Berlin Sisters by Soraya M. Lane. Wow! Absolutely loved this book by Lane, I have read several by her now and I think this one has been by far my favorite. Like all of her HF novels, this is based on actual events. It follows two sisters that are the daughters of a prestigious SS officer. Hanna, a nurse, and Ava, a secretary for Joseph Goebbels. Together they help save a Jewish family while risking their lives. Beautifully written and highly recommend!
