It’s that time of year again—the time when I dust off my NG shelves and try to tackle the books that have been sitting there way too long. Here’s the thing: I have this terrible habit of reading books and then… not reviewing the ones that didn’t reach that 4 or 5-star status. Like, I’ll tell myself, “I’ll write it later,” but “later” somehow turns into, “Wait, what was this book even about again?” So yeah, here we are.
So here I am struggling with a review. since it’s been a minute or two, I don’t remember the details but I did start it and struggled to get into it. There was a bit ok maybe alot of skimming and rushing to get through it.
And that alone probably tells you everything you need to know—I wasn’t into this one. At all.
A quick fast read. I had a hard time staying engaged with this one. It was a miss for me but hopefully I’m in the minority on this one.
Thank you to netgalley for a copy of this book.
As domestic thrillers with a central plot involving domestic abuse go, the storyline isn’t necessarily anything unique. However the author does a marvellous job at building the tension throughout, making this the perfect ‘just one more chapter’ book.
The characters are well written, I hated Duncan with a passion, and rooted for Callie all the way through. Her grit and sheer determination to survive her ordeal were perfectly complimented by her more fearful and vulnerable moments.
Overall, a decent domestic thriller, one I’d definitely recommend to lovers of this genre. Thanks to Boldwood Books for my copy of Nowhere To Hide.
This is the third book from Keri Beevis that I’ve read, having previously reviewed The Summer House and The Boat House, so I knew to expect tension and intrigue from the outset.
There are some obvious trigger warnings which should be apparent from the blurb but the scenes detailing Duncan’s coercive control, gaslighting and physical abuse of Callie, while necessary to the plot, are graphic and could be distressing for readers.
Nowhere to Hide is an excellent portrayal of how easily someone can fall into the trap of a controlling relationship. I found Duncan’s early insistence on calling Callie ‘Mica’ particularly disturbing and well as the description of how quickly he managed to isolate her from her friends and family.
There are several jaw dropping moments, including the message to Juliette after the disastrous dinner party and his subsequent actions and threats, which clearly characterise not only how devious and vindictive Duncan is, but also the brutality of his behaviour towards Callie. As the storyline escalates, his depravity reaches unthinkable levels.
Sidekick and security guard Rob is equally odious and his blatant disregard for Callie and loyalty to Duncan add an extra element of frustration for the reader, as he calmly looks on and becomes complicit in Callie’s treatment.
I liked the way the author chooses to contrast Duncan and Nico’s characters, with both having had troubled pasts and difficult upbringings, yet choosing to move on with their lives in starkly contrasting ways. I loved Nico’s character and how his patience allowed Callie to rediscover her true self.
While I had my suspicions about Anya’s circumstances and correctly predicted certain elements of the plot, I was still left floundering by the twists at the end and raced through the final chapters hoping for a positive ending!
This is a hugely gripping, dark thriller which will keep you turning the pages to discover what happens next. An addictive read!
With thanks to the author, Rachel at Random Resources and Boldwood Books for the opportunity to participate in the tour.
Keri Beevis's new book "Nowhere to Hide" once again proves why she is a master in psychological story telling. This is the 2nd book of hers I am reading and the author hasn't failed to satisfy my expectation of her. The book starts in an ominous tone with a woman, whom we know as Callie Parker, fleeing into the unknown while leaving proof of her demise. She goes on to live low-key in a small town at a little place owned by Nico, the cousin of her friend Laurel, and begins to build a different life for herself.
As the story progresses, the reader gets an insight into the circumstances that led Callie to take the drastic measures she did, through the flashbacks interspersed between the current events. However, Callie's desire to have some peace disintegrates with the discovery of the body of a young woman who works for Nico. While the strange happenings around her new home make Callie question her sanity and safety, things come to a head when new facts about the murder are revealed bit by bit, and we get to know if Callie is finally overcome the prison of fear she has shut herself in.
I must say this book is also an excellent example of psychological thriller. Beevis takes her reader in an elaborate journey into the minds of an abuser and his victim. She seems to specialize in creating unusual reactions to normal occurrences, that can make a person lose their humanity and behave completely out of their moral fabric, while making it completely believable. There were times I was very completely scared for Callie; the situation she was in was so very chilling. The author has also been able to impress upon her readers how very easy it is for any person to fall prey to domestic abuse and how difficult it is to come out of it. The story was also extremely thrilling and engaging; I just couldn't stop reading it till the end.
This book is another exemplary addition to Keri Beevis's repertoire of works and I can't wait to read more.
Trigger warning - This book contains explicit references and events alluding to domestic abuse.
This was a moderately okay book for me. While it was very detailed (to the point where I was uncomfortable), the story itself fell flat for me. Of course it was intense and stressful, but there was nothing fun or enjoyable here. Honestly, there isn't much to say about Nowhere to Hide but it didn't steer me away from trying something by this author again.
It's got to the point where I can't turn down a Keri Beevis novel. She really is a master of tense, gripping thrillers. Nowhere To Hide is another triumph, with all the right elements - well developed, flawed characters, building tension, a compelling story, and page-turning drama. I wanted to shout at Callie from early on to stop her making a huge mistake. I couldn't relax thinking about what might happen, and I think the remote setting really helped with that. It kept me guessing, and I didn't really trust anyone for a while. Great story, fab setting, perfect characters, and a thrilling ride. It deals with highly emotive subjects, with domestic abuse, torture, and coercive control, so be warned! If you can cope with that, it's highly recommended
What I loved the most about this book was the writing. Very good , it had me feeling the fear and I honestly couldnt put it down.
This by far was one of the best books I’ve read this year! If you know me that’s saying something! This book was so intense and so gripping that will not want to put it down! Clear your schedule because if you do put it down it’s all you’re going to think about until you can get back to it. The characters are so well defined and truly make the story believable. And there are so many things you will not believe! And the twists….. they are unforgettable! I loved this book and will recommend it to everyone!!! Great writing and awesome creativity putting this together, well done! 100 stars!
What a fantastic book! A super intense, insanely addictive page turner! One of the best I've read this year. It deals with domestic violence and rivals one of my all-time favorites Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris. It was so gripping that I got lost in it for hours, only taking breaks to eat. Cannot recommend this one enough! A must read!
Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for this eARC.
I really tried with this book, but it seemed as though the book was going nowhere. I was waiting for the excitement or some type of action to take place from the protagonist and antagonist. The story only talked of Callie Nico and Chester. I will say that the door jiggling caught my attention, but after that the story fell flat for me.
I had a hard time getting into this book. It definitely should have trigger warnings, including physical and psychological abuse as well as animal abuse.
Could very well be a true story. A twist happened about 80% through but other than that it was a pretty slow moving book.
Callie thought she had landed her dream man when she accepted a date with Duncan Stone. Charming, kind, handsome and rich, he seemed too good to be true. Callie was in love and everything seemed perfect when Duncan asked her to move in with him. But little did she know, she was walking into a prison. Soon she had been cut off from her friends, her job and Duncan's henchman was watching her every move. Callie is trapped in a loveless, abusive and violent relationship and she cannot escape. A chance encounter with an old friend offers Callie a chance to escape to the remote countryside. Surely, Duncan will not find her there? Just as Callie settles into her new quiet life and starts to build a relationship with her friends kind and supportive brother, whose cottage she is staying in, Duncan's henchman is spotted in the area searching for her. Can she escape Duncan or will he get his way as he always does and track her down and resume controlling her life. I was absolutely rooting for Callie all the way through and wanted to throttle Duncan myself! Its so well written because men like Duncan are far too common unfortunately. Charming to the outside world, but a devil behind closed doors. A really good read. Perfect for taking on hols!
Totally gripping but hard read. A people really be that cruel. Was hard to put this book down. A real page turner but uncomfortable read.
Reading Between the Wines book review #38/130 for 2024:
Rating: 4 🍷 🍷 🍷 🍷
Book: Nowhere to Hide
Author: Keri Beevis
Available now!
Sipping thoughts: Keri Beevis has done it again! She knows how to make me so mad as I am reading but still unable to put the book down. Duncan was one of the most deplorable characters I have read. I could not read fast enough to see how Callie was going to escape and get vengeance. Beevis knows how to write unlikable characters, and this is my 4th book of hers and I can’t get enough. I am excited to see what comes out next.
Cheers and thank you to @BoldwoodBooks, @Keri.Beevis and @Netgalley for an advanced copy of @NowhereToHide.

I was hooked from the very first page! Told from the POV of Callie, who meets an A-lister actor, Duncan Stone. She falls in love and moves with him to the country and leaves her life behind. Unfortunately Duncan may look good, but his intentions are not. He is an abusive, cruel man with a narcissistic and somewhat sadistic dark side. He keeps her in the house, not letting her communicate with the outside world. She plots her escape and ends up living with one of her friends brothers, Nico, on his estate, praying that she will be safe. Her shocking experiences have made her hyperaware, is she right to her fears and paranoia or is she safe at Stable Cottage on Willow Brook Farm? Who can she trust?
This book had me wanting to look over my shoulder.
WOAH! This book was intense!!! Truly grabbed me from the very beginning and kept me up late at night until I could finish! I love books that start out with high energy and the plot grabs you right away.
This book is OUT NOW, highly recommend!!
Thank you NetGalley for this ARC, all opinions are my own
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read and review this book. I had high hopes for this book as I'd seen most of this author's work get great ratings. This story, which is about a woman feeling an abusive relationship is fairly predictable in some ways. There are a few surprises and a decent twist in the end, which saved the book for me. It started off well and then just slowed right down. The abusive ex, who is a famous former actor, seems to be pretty one-dimensional and so does the main character. Callie escapes her controlling and violent ex and is in hiding with the adoptive brother of a former friend. Sparks fly, which I found a bit groaningly cliche, and there was a lot of focus on Callie being shell-shocked (obviously with very good reason), but it never went anywhere until the final lead-up to her ex inevitably and predictably finding her. But again, there was a decent twist that I didn't see coming. There was a murder, which came with some misdirection etc. but it didn't really add much to the story, as it was confusing where the focus was supposed to be at times. I'll give the author's other books a try to see if this was just a one-off.
This is a fantastic read, I was hooked from the very first page.
Keri Beevis' is becoming one of my all time favourite authors and Nowhere to Hide is worth a read.
We meet main character Callie, who meets an A-lister actor, Duncan Stone. She falls in love and moves with him to the country and leaves her life behind.
We learn that Duncan is a sadistic and cruel man, and the things he puts Callie through is horrific. She plots her escape and ends up living with one of her friends brothers on his estate.
Callie and Nico become close and that is a story in itself. Really good plot, narration and well rounded and likeable characters.
Told through the perspective of mainly Callie, each chapter is from the past or the present and its a gripping read.
Thanks to Netgalley, Keri Beevis and the publishers for allowing me a copy of this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Ok this was a thriller!!
Duncan Stone, is one of the country's most sought-after bachelors, he sweeps Callie Parker right off her feet from all his attention. Initially excited by their whirlwind romance, Callie soon finds that her her dream is actually a nightmare after she discovers Duncan's true nature-he's controlling and manipulative. Cut off from her support network, Callie finds herself trapped and isolated, she soon realizes she needs to escape and it’s her way to survive. Seeking refuge in the Norfolk countryside, she lives with fear and paranoia, haunted by the sense of being watched. As the tension escalates, Callie questions whether Duncan has found her or if the danger lurks closer to home! There were times while reading that my stomach turned from some of the abuse scenes he was truly a monster! But I loved the book
