I really enjoyed this book I liked how it gave the different characters perspectives rather than just being focused on one narrative. Additionally the build up to discovering who committed the crime was well laid out with lots of suspense. Overall a good read which was easy get into.
A new Rachel Abbott book is always a cause for celebration but in this instance the celebrations were short lived. For me it just wasn't in the same style that the author is know for, parts were to far-fetched and I struggled to want to pick it up but finish it I did it just wasn't for me this time.
I look forward to the authors next book in the future.

I’ve absolutely loved all of Rachel’s previous books and couldn’t wait to delve into this one, but I have to be completely honest that this was my least favourite. It really didn’t feel like a Rachel Abbott book at all. It felt like the plot was just going round in circles and was quite repetitive. I liked the idea of the book but it just didn’t have the same excitement and drama and ‘unputdownableness’ of all of her other books.
I really wanted to love it, like I have all her others, but I must also say I didn’t like the ending one bit! I won’t go into detail but I think it was unnecessary and left me feeling really disappointed.
Hopefully this is a one off blip, maybe trying something a bit different, I would definitely read more in the hope she writes as she has previously.
If this is your first Rachel Abbott book, do seek out all her others, you won’t be disappointed!
This is one of those books that I was hooked from the first page. The timing of this book was phenomenal and I really couldn’t work out what was going to happen. I haven’t read anything by this author before but it will defo be on my list
I have always loved Rachel’s books but I found this one a bit disappointing. The plot against the obnoxious Ellis was excellent but I found the story very repetitive. However, the ending was totally unexpected.
This book is so slow. Chapter 11 and nothing is happening. Just boring mundane things. Couldn't finish it.
Rachel Abbott never fails to please - another well thought out and keep you guessing to the end tale!
Set at a luxury hotel we are gradually introduced to the protagonists until one is murdered and the hunt begins to find who did it
Stephanie and Max are the main investigating officers, she is a DS and he a DCI - they are also a couple
The guests are a mixed bunch; amongst them are Juliette who has a secret she’s hiding from her adoring husband and
Celia who is terrified of her bullying and obnoxious one.
Nadia is a singer who is still hoping to make the big time
No one is quite who they seem and as things unravel the police are finding it very difficult to find any solid evidence against anyone
I was hooked from the first page and want more!
This mystery starts off with a rather ordinary plot, an unpleasant but wealthy and handsome man is murdered in a hotel where his wife, his current mistress and an ex mistress are all staying. The three women seem to know more about the murder than they are saying and all three of them have reasons to want this man dead. However as the story moves on it is clear that it is not as simple as it seems. The detectives in charge of the case (who happen to be married to each other) can not see quite where the evidence is and have trouble piecing it all together. At time the plot seems a little complicated and even, at times, rather boring. However the last 2 chapters result in a disclosure that is totally unexpected. A great read although I think the plot could have been a little more concise.
This is my first book from Rachel Abbott, therefore I’ve not read any of the Stephanie King series before however I didn’t feel like I’d missed out. This can be read as a standalone as the author provides enough back story information to welcome new readers mid series.
The Last Time I Saw Him is about the murder of (the vile!) Ellis Cobain and the unknowingly intertwined lives of Celia, Juliette and Nadia. All had good reason to kill him but is all what it seems?
I loved that this book was told from varying perspectives, really built on the mystery and who doesn’t love an unreliable narrator, or narrators in this situation. The information about the women’s lives and that fateful night slowly unravel keeping the reader engaged throughout.
If it was not for one totally unrealistic action by one of the characters in this book then I would have really enjoyed my read. This is revealed in chapter 75 of the book with three chapters remaining, and the action taken is totally against the nature of what we know of the character and also physically not possible for the uninitiated.
I liked the plot with three women who have all been badly treated by a man, discussing ways to try and get there lives back together and out of his domination.
The police officers investigating the death at a hotel are very believable and all the investigation takes place within the hotel with guests still present.
I liked trying to guess who committed the murder and I did not suspect the right person. But this denouement left me feeling very deflated.
This is the first Rachel Abbott book I have read so that I have no idea if this book is typical of her style.

I was absolutely delighted to be approved for Rachel Abbott's new book. Have read loads and pretty much loved them, This one was, well, trying to be different, which it was but ultimately was highly unsatisfactory. A reworking of a Highsmith plot with extremely unlikable characters and a drug overdose victim called Cobain? Oh dear. The ending was very silly not least because someone in that position wouldn't have been so careless and the second peron wouldn't have been so unprofessional, so no, it didn't come off and left a very unsatisfied feeling.
It also was very slow going.
Her other books have been fab and I will read more but this one just didn't cut the mustard
Great story, a real cliffhanger which keeps you guessing right up until the end.
(Note for editor I think the word phone is missing from page 269)
I enjoyed this book. 3 women, Celia, Juliette and Nadia don't know each other, but when they find themselves staying at the same luxurious Cornish hotel, the realise the y have one thing in common - their hatred of one man, Ellis Cobain. When Ellis is found dead on his yacht, all 3 women fall under suspicion. This is a fast moving story with plenty of twists and turns that will keep you guessing to the end.
Thanks to NetGalley for a preview copy.
Copied to Goodreads.
I found this to be a bit of a slog. I am a huge fan of Rachel Abbott but i really struggled with this book. Everything seemed to happen all at once. But it was still a good read. #TheLastTimeISawHim #NetGalley
I can't hand on heart, say this was my favourite book of Rachel's. It was repetitive in places and I felt we were going over and over the same story. The ending was strange and unnecessary but strangly I did enjoy what Stephanie did at the end. Thought it was fitting for the man Ellis was. Thank you netgalley for the advance copy
This is the first Rachel Abbott book I’ve read and whilst Sergeant Stephanie King is clearly an established character this this read as easily as a standalone but I’m sure fans of the series would equally enjoy it. This was a great murder read set in a small hotel and it becomes increasingly clear that several of the characters had reason to want the victim dead, I liked the multiple perspectives on this so you could see how the investigation was proceeding but also get into the heads of the suspects and events leading up to the murder. The ending was quite a shock with several unexpected turns and I’ll be very interested in reading the next book.
Tension compelling reading at its best.
Who do you trust when the chips are down? The wife, the past mistress, the present mistress, the present mistresses husband or the police.
All had reasons to kill a most obnoxious and controlling man, but had the nerve at the end to kill him.
Page turning thriller.
Thank you Netgalley for letting me read this book.
Celia, Juliette, and Nadia have all been wronged by Ellis Cobain, an abusive and narcissistic control freak, When he is found dead on his yacht detectives are brought in to solve his murder. It happens that one of those detectives, Stephanie, had been staying at the same hotel as them the weekend before and had observed much on the interaction.
I enjoyed the element in this book of the whodunnit. It kept me guessing until near the end. I did, however, find a couple of elements a bit far fetched, particularly a sad element at the end that I didn't feel needed to happen. I don't want to explain that as I don't want to give any of the plot away. However, I warmed to the characters and did enjoy the story throughout.
This was such an enjoyable read, one of those books where nothing is quite what it seems and it is hard to feel sure which version of events, if any, is the truth of a situation.
There were some very likeable characters, and some very unlikeable characters but they were all well-defined and distinct making it possible to keep up with the complex storyline as it unfolded.
Much like the author's other books, The Last Time I Saw Him is a clever psychological thriller with some brilliant and mostly unexpected twists and turns throughout. Lots of tension and suspense and oh so many secrets that people are very keen to keep hidden!
I did not finish this one as I found it to be slow and tedious. I gave up after 50% as I just couldn't be bothered anymore. My thanks to netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
