Okay so I came across this book and INSTANTLY got very excited. I mean, a Jessica Jones novel written by the queen of crime herself, Lisa Jewell!? I squealed.

What an amazing book idea and a greatly executed piece. And can I just say, I am SO glad she wrote it. Not just for herself but for the epic book she has delivered to us. I have this as an ebook but it needs to be upgraded as a physical copy to my shelf! It is worthy.

I only know Jessica Jones from the TV show so my knowledge on the original comics is lacking however this book did everything I knew and loved justice. It was a fab story with great writing (no surprise there) and the cover too was a great draw. I just loved everything about it.

She’s seriously such an amazing character and it made for great reading in a book format. Im so glad they commissioned this! I really enjoyed following Jessica Jones on this case and deepening my interest in other characters too.

I so hope they write more in this style because they are a great way to bring Marvel alive outside what we see in movies, on TV and in graphic novels. This is definitely one I’m going to reread. Bring on the rest in this series!

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this eARC of 'Breaking the Dark' by Lisa Jewell.

Going into this novel, I had heard of Lisa Jewell - my mum has read a novel by her - but I didn't know what to expect. I adore Jessica Jones so I was nervous but now I realise I shouldn't have been so nervous. I love the way Jewell wrote Jessica and the whole story was nuts in a good Marvel way. It was just fun and I'm excited to see the other 2 Marvel Crime novels when they come out.

Breaking the Dark gives readers the opportunity to meet Jessica Jones, a private investigator who chooses to live a reclusive life now that she's a retired super hero. With this being the first book in the new Marvel Crime series, fans of Lisa Jewell can expect a more gritty mystery rooted in the paranormal.

Jessica is hired by Amber Randall, a mother who is concerned her twins are acting out of character since visiting their father abroad. She sets out to discover the truth behind their behaviour, but gets more than she bargained for as she digs deeper into their story.

The story is told through flashbacks to the past, giving us insight into the antagonist, but we also learn more about Jessica's personal life as the book progresses. Fans of Jessica Jones and Marvel will enjoy getting lost in the plot, but be aware that this is a story rooted in the supernatural so be prepared to leave reality at the door!

A new Lisa Jewel book is always a cause for excitement, and when that book is based on the Marvel series, that excitement goes to another level.
This is set between the USA and UK and covers 2 different timelines.
The supernatural element to the story is fantastically written and totally shows how good a writer Lisa is having the ability to write such a great story that is something totally out of her comfort zone.
A fun, exciting and supercharged read that even readers who are not lovers off Marvel will be able to pick up and enjoy, and who knows, you might find yourself drawn over to another universe.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Thanks to Netgalley and Random House UK for the ARC.

The TLDR is that this was way better than all my expectations combined and I’m kinda shook!

I don’t think anyone would ever pick up a book that is part of a "marvel crime series" and expect it to be the epitome of realism but just in case, people who can’t deal with unrealistic situations should steer clear.

I was conflicted on whether I should request the arc or not because I hate almost everything related to marvel but the synopsis had me on a chokehold.
I don’t know about you but reading how this was all about a mom who hires a PI because she wants to know if her children were being cloned or duped or switched (you know, the usual freaky shit) after they come back home from a trip to UK and they look and act different sounded too intriguing for me to pass it up. And I’m glad I didn’t.

Going in, you should definitely keep an open mind, forget common sense for a few hours and just trust the process. The plot line alone was worth it I loved all the creepy things we get to discover along the way, the execution was not boring at all, the pacing was perfect to achieve maximum engagement, the characters were pretty well developed, the interactions between them felt genuine and overall this exceeded my expectations.
Also, my concerns about this being to heavy handed with the MCU and all that were thankfully not a big deal. It could have been way more ridiculous than it actually was and I appreciated very much that things were kept relatively mild.

I’ll be definitely keeping an out for the rest of the books in the series, curious to see what else they’re gonna do with it.
Thank you NetGalley and Random House UK for the digital ARC!

This book. Wow. I watched the series of Jessica Jones and Lisa Jewell fully captured the dark vibes. The book hooked me in straight away and I loved where she went with it. Set between USA and UK and with chapters in different periods of time lines. A great venture for Lisa and a brilliant win for
Marvel. The book can be read by someone super into Marvel and also someone who has no prior super hero knowledge. I enjoyed the twists and turns and the worry of where tech may lead!

Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and of course Lisa Jewell for this arc.

I love Lisa Jewell's books but superheroes aren't really my thing. This one was fantastic though! I watched some Jessica Jones videos online to get a feel for the character, which made it even better.

The story is about twins who act totally different after a summer trip. It jumps between the UK and USA, and even different times. There's fighting, secrets, and some interesting ideas about social media and technology.

Even though I don't usually like superhero stuff, this book was fun and exciting. I recommend it!

(Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me a free copy of the book. This review is honest and all my own opinions.)

I didn't think I would like this book. Although I have read and enjoyed several books by Lisa Jewell, I am not familiar with Jessica Jones and Marvel and science fiction/fantasy is not my favourite genre. I needn't have worried. Lisa Jewell is such an accomplished writer she could probably turn her shopping list into a 5-star read.
I quickly became absorbed into the story and couldn't put it down. Jessica is tasked with finding out why twins Lark and Fox appear to be very different people after spending the summer with their father in the UK. The action takes place in the UK and the USA and across 2 timelines. The book is fun, action-packed and pacy with well-drawn characters. It also addresses some serious issues - pressure from social influencers, the striving for perfection and the dangers of modern technology.
A great read and highly recommended.
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for an arc in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

I love Lisa Jewell and I was a bit apprehensive of this as it wasn't her usual style but she didn't let me down. What a book. I loved it

Solid 5 star read from me. Couldn't put it down

3.5 stars

I don't know Jessica Jones at all, or indeed Marvel. But I do know Jewell, and I know she can write different genre books.
I also know she couldn't wrote a bad book if she tried.

This is action packed, a bit creepy, a bit worrying as to where technologymight lead us in the future.
It's a really good start to the marvel series, which I'll probably now pick up more of.
I think Jewell has another hit on her hands.

I absolutely raced through this in a weekend. It’s dark, twisty, full of suspense and everything you’d want it to be.
There’s something special about picking up a new Lisa Jewell book and this one really hit the spot.

Lisa Jewell proves without a doubt, that she can write ANYTHING!

When I first heard Lisa Jewell announce that she was writing a Marvel novel, I thought I needed my eyes and ears testing! Where did that come from!? I mean, I like Marvel as much as the next bloke (actually, probably not quite as much!), but I LOVE Lisa Jewell’s books (more than the next bloke, probably!). I knew I had to read it, especially seeing I finished reading all of her back catalogue last year and loved every book for its own unique reasons. Well, I can confirm that she’s done it again - this is a BRILLIANT book! It is simultaneously a fresh and new style for Jewell, but also distinctly her book. Despite being set in the super-hero universe, this book is incredibly grounded in humanity. It’s gritty, thought-provoking, emotional, raw, with this fine thread of the fantastical woven throughout. Jewell blends the supernatural elements of the plot so perfectly with the real world emotions and experiences, creating a unique reading experience. This feels like a speculative thriller rather than a science fiction novel, so it was more accessible than I could have hoped.

Whilst Jessica Jones’s super-powers are definitely something that’s explored in the novel, they are secondary to the overarching plot. This is very much a story about Jessica: her emotions, her journey, her past, her future. This is what makes this novel the kind of story we love from Jewell. It’s still a story of motherhood; clothes and evocative character imagery are still prevalent; locations are still vividly drawn; and the psychological impact of life is still explored in an exhilarating way. Similarly, the social commentary that we expect from Jewell’s thrillers is still at the heart of the narrative. This book explores the juxtaposition of rich and poor; the dark side of influencer culture; the negative impact that advertising has on self-image; the potential harm of advancing technology; and the danger of pursuing perfection. On top of this, there’s a wild and fun plot that is action-packed, engaging and like nothing Jewell has written before. I can’t stress enough how gripped I was and how much I enjoyed this!

I was intrigued to read the first in this Marvel Crime series, having both watched the tv series about Jessica Jones and read everything Lisa Jewell has written. It’s a clever idea from the publisher as I wouldn’t have picked up the novelisation of the character without being tempted by Lisa Jewell.

In the story, the superhero Jessica Jones is employed to discover what has happened to twin children who have returned to New York from a summer in England with a complete change of character. Jessica’s visit to a small English village uncovers a much bigger plot based around the Internet, the pressures of social media and a mysterious skin care product.

It’s an interesting plot and I still really enjoyed Jewell’s writing. It took a little getting used to the character of Jessica Jones in the English setting rather than New York and the more supernatural elements of the story felt a little strange at times but overall I thoroughly enjoyed it. A really good start to the series and I’ll be interested to see the other author’s takes on the characters.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an advance copy in return for an honest review.

When I heard Lisa Jewell was to write a Marvel book to say I was disappointed was an understatement. I don’t like Marvel or any superheroes full stop. I ummed and ahhed over whether I would read or not.
In the end my love for Lisa’s books won and by gosh I am glad it did. Lisa has written a great novel for fans and non fans of Marvel. Jessica Jones is a superhero but not what I would consider and typical superhero. She is likeable and I was really rooting for her. She is a great Private Investigator who has empathy and respect for those around her. I won’t go into too much detail as I went in blind and I’m glad I did as I had no idea where this would go.
Although this isn’t your typical thriller it’s a good mystery book with lots of twisty turns. I loved how there were two timelines, present and then the past leading us right up the present day. It is an easy read and I found it to be a real page tuner. I stayed up late many a nights thinking one more chapter, oh that was a short one best do another!
If you love Lisa Jewell’s previous books you will love this one (even if you aren’t particularly fond of marvel/ superheroes or sci-fi) and if you love Marvel you will not be disappointed. If you are a fan of then brace yourself!
This book has opened up a whole new genre to me and I’m sure it will bring the author a whole new fan base!
If you have any doubts about reading this then forget them now it’s a guaranteed bestseller and I promise you won’t be disappointed! This is a full 5 stars despite telling myself it would be a 3 at best! Never judge a book by its cover!

This was my first Lisa Jewel book and also my first Jessica Jones novel, although I have seen the first season of the tv-show Jessica Jones. I feel that Lisa did an excellent job in capturing Jessica and the story was engaging and fresh. I loved the murder mystery part and the paranormal vibe of the case. I will absolutely be reading more of Lisa’s work and I can’t wait to read more about Jessica Jones and her friends in future books from this series.

What a fabulous mash up. I was so thrilled to get an early copy of this. I get a bit marvelled out sometimes but Jessica Jones is one of the series I first watched on Netflix and I have read every Lisa Jewell book. It is odd to read a supernatural book in her style but it works so well.

I wasn't sure how I would get on with this one - I enjoy Marvel, will go to the cinema to see any of the new films, but I'm by no means a super fan. I am, however, a massive Lisa Jewell fan. I definitely didn't need to have worried - this book was everything I love about Lisa's writing, with a sci-fi/supernatural twist.
We followed a few different POVs all taking place in different parts of the world - I was particularly intrigued by Ophelia, Polly and co. I was fascinated by the individual stories, and it was so satisfying to see how they all connected as the story slowly pieced together.
Not just a superhero story, this book also covers some really important topics - society's obsession with being perfect, and the moral dilemma surrounding this, and Jessica's difficult relationship with motherhood to name a few.
I couldn't write a review without quickly mentioning how much I loved Malcom, Jessica's intern. He was a brilliant addition to this story!
I'd definitely now be more inclined now to consume more content including Jessica Jones. Overall, a really enjoyable read - I think the Marvel Crime series could make Marvel more accessible for a lot of people!

💥BREAKING THE DARK💥

Jessica Jones and Lisa Jewell? I. Am. Sold.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

I was so intrigued when I came across this on netgalley and knew I had to read it!

Lisa Jewell's writing is always so thrilling to read and I absolutely love Jessica Jones and am still grumpy the Netflix show was cancelled. So, a full length Jessica Jones crime novel was right up my street!

📖
Amber Randall employs Jessica Jones as a private investigator to discover what happened to her twin teens over the summer when they stayed with their father. They returned to New York and were not themselves👀

💭
I was hooked from the getgo with this one. I was so intrigued by everything going on and I needed to know how all the storylines tied together! The book is set partly in New York, and partly in England. There are multiple POVs and timelines but it was easy enough to follow despite everything going on.

Breaking the Dark was action packed and I feel like Lisa Jewell wrote Jessica Jones amazingly. She had all the attitude we expect from her and I loved the nod to other characters like Luke Cage and Kilgrave. If you know nothing about Jessica Jones, the story gives you enough information about her without being tedious for those that are aware of her.

I read Breaking the Dark during my time in Madrid and it was a great page-turning holiday read but it'd be just as great to read anytime.

Breaking the Dark is out on the 4th July and I suggest you get it preordered! ✨

Thank you @netgalley @penguinrandomhouse and @lisajewelluk for approving me to read this eARC ❤️

I was so excited to see a new Lisa Jewell that I requested a copy without reading the premise. That has worked in my favour I think, as if I had seen it was about a Marvel character I would not have wanted to read the book. I’m not much into superhero’s but this book, under Lisa’s writing is really good.
Jessica Jones (I had to look her up) runs a detective agency. After an incident that really messed up her mind, she has become reckless, sleeping around, drinking and not looking after herself in general. But then she suspects she might be pregnant and starts to make an effort on her health. She is asked to look into the bizarre behaviour of two twins, Fox and Lark, by their mother. The twins went to stay with their father in the UK and returned to New York, totally different in nature and looks. Jessica employs a young boy, Malcolm, to help her get close to the twins, meanwhile she flys to the UK to visit the father and the town where he lives. Evil lives there and Jessica nearly falls under the spell.
It’s a really enjoyable read and the author has obviously read the Jessica Jones novels and incorporated her backstory into this one. Although having said I don’t like superheroes I will definitely be reading the next one about Luke Cage as it’ will be written by another author I enjoy, S A Cosby.
