I wasn't sure how I would get on with this one - I enjoy Marvel, will go to the cinema to see any of the new films, but I'm by no means a super fan. I am, however, a massive Lisa Jewell fan. I definitely didn't need to have worried - this book was everything I love about Lisa's writing, with a sci-fi/supernatural twist.
We followed a few different POVs all taking place in different parts of the world - I was particularly intrigued by Ophelia, Polly and co. I was fascinated by the individual stories, and it was so satisfying to see how they all connected as the story slowly pieced together.
Not just a superhero story, this book also covers some really important topics - society's obsession with being perfect, and the moral dilemma surrounding this, and Jessica's difficult relationship with motherhood to name a few.
I couldn't write a review without quickly mentioning how much I loved Malcom, Jessica's intern. He was a brilliant addition to this story!
I'd definitely now be more inclined now to consume more content including Jessica Jones. Overall, a really enjoyable read - I think the Marvel Crime series could make Marvel more accessible for a lot of people!
💥BREAKING THE DARK💥
Jessica Jones and Lisa Jewell? I. Am. Sold.
⭐⭐⭐⭐
I was so intrigued when I came across this on netgalley and knew I had to read it!
Lisa Jewell's writing is always so thrilling to read and I absolutely love Jessica Jones and am still grumpy the Netflix show was cancelled. So, a full length Jessica Jones crime novel was right up my street!

Amber Randall employs Jessica Jones as a private investigator to discover what happened to her twin teens over the summer when they stayed with their father. They returned to New York and were not themselves👀

I was hooked from the getgo with this one. I was so intrigued by everything going on and I needed to know how all the storylines tied together! The book is set partly in New York, and partly in England. There are multiple POVs and timelines but it was easy enough to follow despite everything going on.
Breaking the Dark was action packed and I feel like Lisa Jewell wrote Jessica Jones amazingly. She had all the attitude we expect from her and I loved the nod to other characters like Luke Cage and Kilgrave. If you know nothing about Jessica Jones, the story gives you enough information about her without being tedious for those that are aware of her.
I read Breaking the Dark during my time in Madrid and it was a great page-turning holiday read but it'd be just as great to read anytime.
Breaking the Dark is out on the 4th July and I suggest you get it preordered! ✨
Thank you @netgalley @penguinrandomhouse and @lisajewelluk for approving me to read this eARC ❤️
I was so excited to see a new Lisa Jewell that I requested a copy without reading the premise. That has worked in my favour I think, as if I had seen it was about a Marvel character I would not have wanted to read the book. I’m not much into superhero’s but this book, under Lisa’s writing is really good.
Jessica Jones (I had to look her up) runs a detective agency. After an incident that really messed up her mind, she has become reckless, sleeping around, drinking and not looking after herself in general. But then she suspects she might be pregnant and starts to make an effort on her health. She is asked to look into the bizarre behaviour of two twins, Fox and Lark, by their mother. The twins went to stay with their father in the UK and returned to New York, totally different in nature and looks. Jessica employs a young boy, Malcolm, to help her get close to the twins, meanwhile she flys to the UK to visit the father and the town where he lives. Evil lives there and Jessica nearly falls under the spell.
It’s a really enjoyable read and the author has obviously read the Jessica Jones novels and incorporated her backstory into this one. Although having said I don’t like superheroes I will definitely be reading the next one about Luke Cage as it’ will be written by another author I enjoy, S A Cosby.

I wasn’t sure I would enjoy this book as not a Marvel fan but am a fan of Lisa Jewell. This is not her usual type of book and this might put some readers off but don’t be put off by it. I enjoyed this book more thanI thought I would and found it hard to put down. I would definate recommend it
The first in a series of Marvel Crime novels written by highly respected thriller writers. I know there’s already some scepticism from readers who say they won’t read a superhero novel, I’m going to tell you why you should!
I’m not a huge fan of big budget cinematic Marvel movies, with the endless CGI action scenes and limited character development. Forget about those, I trust Lisa Jewell so had to find out for myself…
Jessica Jones is a private detective, and a reluctant superhero. She’s requested to investigate the strange case of two teenage twins, Fox and Lark. They returned from visiting their dad in England and came back changed, withdrawn, disinterested while outwardly radiant with flawless skin.
Lisa Jewell pitches this perfectly. Jessica Jones investigates in the present, while the past builds up the origins of the malign influences that have enthralled Fox and Lark.
The plot builds up gradually and gets really quite involved. There’s great character development. Lisa Jewell definitely hasn’t dumbed down her writing or plotting for this outing. It feels just like a Lisa Jewell book with added superpower possibilities.
I wouldn’t have minded a few more twists or a higher impact finale but I thoroughly enjoyed it, much more than sceptical me might have expected.
As open-minded thriller readers we can enjoy Ask For Andrea’s spirit-limbo main characters, M.W. Craven’s Fearless Ben Koenig and Gareth Brown’s Book Of Doors with magic books that bestow superpowers on their owners. Read Breaking The Dark with no expectations and an open mind and I think you’ll really enjoy it.
Sure to be one of this year’s most talked about books. Read it!

Retired superhero Jessica Jones is approached in her PI role by a wealthy New York woman who claims that her twins, Lark and Fox, have not been the same since they went to visit their father in the UK.
When Jessica visits Britain to investigate, she stumbles upon a dastardly plot that goes far beyond what has happened to the twins. But can she take on the powerful forces at work here?
Lisa Jewell delivers an exciting read with, as always, a twist in the tail. This will be greatly enjoyed by her fans, as well as those who love Marvel characters. A cracking start to the Marvel Crime series, it gets 3.5 stars.
I was a tad sceptical about the idea of this, however I very much enjoyed the more mystery and gritty side of a marvel adventure. Jessica may have super powers but she comes across as very human and not dissimilar to Lisa Jewell's 'normal' characters. Her apprentice Malcolm is also a great character and I could very much see this as a series!
Thanks PRH for the early copy! I very much enjoyed this quite different book from Lisa Jewell. Mixing some of my favourite genres (sci-fi & crime) this was always going to go down well for me! Two children come back home after summer claiming they are and feel perfect, what has happened to them? And what is happening to the kids of NYC? Jessica Jones is on the case and I very much enjoyed the more mystery and gritty side of a marvel adventure. I’m not actually a massive marvel fan but this one was way more up my street with a real blend of super-hero’s and crime. Jessica may have super powers but she comes across as very human and actually needs to use her human nature more than the powers she possesses. Her apprentice Malcolm is also a great character and I could very much see this as a series or film!
