Lisa Jewell brought to this book her usual quality, however with a slightly different writing style. I didn’t previously know anything about Jessica Jones, but I felt like that didn’t matter as I was able to discover the character and get to know her throughout this book.
I’m not a huge Marvel fan (I didn’t realise this was a Marvel book when requesting) but the superhero elements were more minimal than expected, which for me was a good thing. Overall it was a fairly enjoyable read.
Another great book by Lisa Jewell, that, despite being set within the Marvel Universe doesn't directly need you to understand where it fits in, but does require you to understand that it is in a world where things can happen that wouldn't normally be able to occur
Lisa Jewell and a Marvel Crime series? Absolutely sign me up! I'm a huge fan of Lisa Jewell's books. Her books are an auto buy for me given her prowess at crafting amazing thrillers and narratives. She's the absolute queen of thrillers and twists. I love Marvel and Jessica Jones so this was the perfect amalgamation for me. Having said that, you do not really need to have prior knowledge of Marvel or Jessica Jones to read this book.
This book consists of the classic Lisa Jewell style of writing. She draws visuals with her words and this is a well crafted thriller. I would want to see more books in this series! She works brilliantly with a character that has been showcased multiple times and held my attention as I kept turning the pages. Absolutely recommend!
Thank you Random House UK, Cornerstone and NetGalley for this e-arc in exchange of my unbiased review.
Lisa Jewell knows how to grab her reader’s attention and keep tight ahold. Breaking the Dark is no exception. It must be so difficult to write about a character who already exists and has a complex back story, but Jewell picks Jessica up and seamlessly weaves her into a pacy plot without breaking stride. I couldn’t put it down, and can’t wait for more.
It was a good premise and fantastic message but the story felt a bit slower and lacking action. I did enjoy it reading it in general as I like the way Lisa writer (hence the 3 stars) but I guess I would have just liked for more to happen or for the reveal at the end to be clearer as the powers were not really explained
I love Lisa Jewell books but have never watched any Marvel films or read any books relating to marvel so I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy this book. I got this book because it was the latest Lisa Jewell book and I never read the blurb as I like to be surprised.
I really enjoyed this book, I loved the character of Jennifer Jones. Jennifer is a super hero who was attempting to live a normal life in New York. She was a private investigator and was approached by Amber Randall. Ambers twins had been on holiday in New York with their dad and since they had come back to New York she felt they were acting really strangely and she wanted Jennifer to find out why.
Jennifer started the investigation and it wasn’t long before things took a very dark turn.
A fab read- I’ve already ordered the book for someone else. Thanks to the publishers and to NetGalley for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
*Delayed review due to holiday*
Where in fact, there was banners and signs advertising this book all over!
Jessica Jones, a failed superhero turned PI, getting on with life and trying to avoid alcohol, when a case lands on her lap. Two teenage sons of Amber Randall, have come back to NY from spending a month of summer with their dad in the UK... completely different.
Different as in, brand new flawless skin, which once was acne ridden, their eyes are vacant and tics have miraculously disappeared.
Amber enlists Jessica's help to find out who returned from the UK and what exactly happened.
Breaking Dark is not the typical Lisa Jewell book, however as a Marvel fan myself, this absolutely did not disappoint. If Jessica Jones is not well known to you, her past is slowly revealed within this book to understand why she is where she is.
I hope Jewell continues with a book series on Jones! And yes, this book is well advertised around the Disney Parks themselves!
Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The usual Lisa Jewell insight and crystal writing I adore but with a Marvel twist. You don't need to know anything about Jessica Jones to love this book.
I am a huge Lisa Jewell fan and this book is completely different to her usual pieces of writing. I was pleasantly surprised at how I genuinely enjoyed reading this. I hope she will rite more adventures for Marvel's Jessica Jones.
Jessica is a washed up super hero who is now a private investigator. A rich lady approaches her to investigate what happened to her teen twins whilst they were vacationing in the UK for the Summer. According to her, ever since the kids are back, they've been behaving rather strangely. Jessica embarks on the journey to solve this weird case while also battling with her own demons.
Thank you NetGalley and the publishers for proving this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book felt totally different to any of Jewell's other novels and it wasn't quite what I was expecting.
Lisa Jewell is a queen of writing mysterious novels, full of twists, turns and deceit, and that didn't fall short in this novel. The writing style felt new and innovative, as well as generally exploring new ideas within this novel. I liked the detective of Jessica Jones, she was a breath of fresh air and I enjoyed getting to know her as a character.
I am confident in saying that I myself am not a huge marvel fan. However, I did still enjoy reading the novel and delving into the gritty side of the mystery novels that we don't always see as readers.
I love Lisa jewell she is one of my top authors so was really excited to receive this book It was a bit different to her usual style but i still enjoyed it.
Jessica Jones is not happy she has superhero traits she would prefer drinking then Amber turns up to ask for help about her twins she says they have changed since going on a trip to the uk to see there father. so Jessica goes to visit the father.
Like all Lisa Jewells books it was well written i like all the characters even the bad ones.
Although we are told this is written as a Lisa Jewell classic, I was failing to see it at first. However I got the end and realised that's exactly what it was! I really enjoyed this and having the different backdrop to Lisa's usual books, and the Marvel aspect is an even greater bonus! The perfect amount of turns in the plot and enough to keep you gripped for the ending, although a little predictable but I feel the plot was lead this way purposefully. I thoroughly recommend this read.
Although I knew this differed from the usual stuff that Lissa Jewell writes, I failed to get into this read. I am not a Marvel fan, so perhaps this is the reason, as I am not sure if this character is realistic or anything on that level. I found this lacked the usual thrilling elements of storylines that I find with this author and I found it dull and hard to connect with. I will class this a lesson learnt. Marvel reads are not for me, but I will continue to read other works by this author.
I wanted to read this because it was the new Lisa Jewell, not realising it was a Marvel novel, but score it's Jessica Jones! I liked that it wasn't a superhero book (there's just hints of it), that Jessica needed her sleuthing abilities. It was also great to see her progress as a character. A lovely read and a follow-up would be great.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC.
This is book is not your typical Lisa Jewell book, so be prepared for that!
It took me a while to get into it. I'm not a marvel fan but I did get into it and I enjoyed it!
I would read anything by Lisa Jewell!
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoy Lisa's books but, this one. I didn't realise it was a superhero book otherwise I wouldn't have requested it. My thanks to netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
When I first requested I didn’t realise it was Marvel…
Not my cup of tea. I still think Lisa Jewell is a wonderful author but this one wasn’t for me.
I am a huge Lisa Jewell fan so I was so excited for this book. I’m not a Marvel fan though so didn’t know wha to expect from that angle. While I enjoyed the book and liked that the superhero parts of the plot were fairly minimal I’d have liked a little more backstory than we got about Jessica Jones because I was left with a few questions around what had happened to her previously and why it was affecting her in this storyline.
All in all I enjoyed it but prefer Jewell’s previous work.
This was my first Lisa Jewell book and I love marvel so was excited to read something written by an author I've heard only good things about.
I quite enjoyed the premise of the book, Jessica Jones doesn't get the attention she deserves sometimes so I loved that the book was set around her and her world. I liked the flipping between current day and the past, and liked that both timelines moved forward chronologically and met in present day by the end of the book.
I did find the beginning a little bit of hard going, but by the time I was about 1/3in, I was invested and wanted to know just what exactly was going on in England. I'd definitely read more of these marvel stories and of course more Lisa Jewell
I read this novel with Netgalley. I have enjoyed many of Lisa Jewell's novels but knew next to nothing about Marvel characters. Previously, I have enjoyed Lisa Jewell's thrillers more than her older 'relationship-romance' novels.
Breaking The Dark definitely continued those thriller vibes through fast action and suspense. I was able to suspend belief and enter the world of super heroes thanks to the engaging writing and found this book a great page turnover. I also enjoyed the flawed character of Jessica Jones and seeing how she evolved.
Unfortunately, I was just a little disappointed with the final chapters that were used to tie up the loose ends and details that the main story hadn't fully explained. Were they really necessary to include initially in the plot if they weren't integral to it? I found the book hard to rate due to this - 3 stars is possibly over-harsh but it was not a solid 4 star read for me. However, it was an entertaining read.
