This was a really nice read, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked the main character, she was actually quite relatable. I think this is going to be a popular title, especially with the rise in late diagnosis adhd. Robyn is extremely disorganised and struggles to find routines that work. I found her downfall both horrifying and entertaining in equal part, it says a lot about our social media led society. Her family dynamic was really interesting and made so much sense as we peeled back the layers. And I loved her relationship with her sister.
This is a well written and entertaining look at finding your own way forward and learning to become less chaotic.
The answer to successful adulting is how long you can keep a houseplant alive. I feel many of us, trying to find our way in the world, can relate to Lucy Dillon’s interpretation of what it means to be a responsible adult.
All of the pressures of the world of work, dysfunctional families, living up to the expectations of others and navigating mental health are perfectly summed up in Robyn’s story.
I really enjoyed the premise of the book, finding it both feel-good and relatable. However, I struggled with the writing style. As something that is meant to be an easy read, I found it difficult to engage with.
The storyline and the characters were well developed, but I found the writing style off putting in a way that made it a tough book for me to get through.
The relatability, character development, and accurate depiction of how it feels to deal with the pressures of real life were brilliantly done. If it wasn’t for my personal preference of writing, this would be rated higher.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Robyn an estate agent with a new flat. Her sister Cleo’s a cleaner. Juggling every day life in a demanding world. An acting dream that never panned out with a consideration of investing in a development project. Temporarily out of work, making unlikely friendships along the way.
Completely and utterly fell in low with Robyn. Devoured this book and picked up a few cleaning tips along the way, thanks to a Mrs Hinch theme running through it
Perfect read for those who enjoy:
- Complex family relationships
- Comical relatable stories
- Feel good fiction
- Fun easy to read fiction
Irresponsible Adult as a nice and warm feelgood book to cosy up with. I raced through it, as I quicky became engrossed in Robyn's story. In the first part of the book, I found Robyn frustrating as a main character, but really enjoyed her character development and how she slowly finds her way in life. The supporting character were well written, mainly Jim and Robyn's mum en sister. The different storylines were intriguing for me and kept me reading on and on!
I liked how Robyn worked together and later connected with Jim. Her character's development, partly thanks to Jim, was not always big or over the top, but Robyn slowly becomes more aware of her own challenges and how she can navigate in life. I really enjoyed how Jim helped her show that and how their friendship develops.
It was my first Lucy Dillon book and will definitely pick up more of her books in the future!
An easy read. I didn’t find this an especially deep book, but easy enough to get through. I couldn’t always relate to the FMC, but I did enjoy many of the aspects of the book. Would recommend giving it a go.
3.5/5 ⭐️
Thank you NetGalley and publishers for the ARC of this book.
I’m going to be brutally honest, I didn’t really enjoy this book until about 60% in. I found the MC infuriating (relatable to a degree, yes, but still unlikeable). I was convinced she was in her early 20s so when I read that she’s 36(!) I had to put down my kindle and walk away for a minute.
But, like I said, once all the plot points started to come together I had a great time!
The writing is good and the side characters lovely (I do wish we spend more time with Jim). Definitely more slice-of-life rather than romance but I’m not mad about it!
All in all a decent read with some useful cleaning tips!
Good but . . . I didn't enjoy this book as much as I've enjoyed previous Lucy Dillon books. To be honest, I didn't like Cleo. The fact she seemed to blame her sister didn't seem fair. None of the characters really stood out, Jim in particular seemed a bit bland. The main character was fairly likeable, if a little irritating at times. I'm not sure about the way Dillon handled ADHD. I also couldn't understand why the girl's mum wasn't more honest. Her secrecy caused a whole lot of trouble. I liked the way cleaning was linked to helping your mental health. With thanks to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Lucy Dillon is undeniably a queen of cosy fiction — she’s one of those authors who perfectly blends feel-good with all the feels to make something moving and beautiful.
From the first few lines, I felt connected to our main character - her casual, personable voice and conversational narration style made it so easy to get settled in - Robyn was going through catastrophe after catastrophe that made me want to cover my eyes but I couldn’t look away because she just made me feel seen in that lost twenty-something woman way that was so relatable.
As we go through Robyn’s slightly chaotic life, we get a little glimmer of romance, some family drama, and a lot of self-discovery along the way.
A playful, fun and painfully relatable story with a dash of romance - another feel-good hit from Lucy Dillon.
Irresponsible adult is about a 30 something estate agent who is questioning her life choices and feels like she can never live up to her glamorous older sister Cleo. When a series of unfortunate events lead to her losing her job she starts to look but more closely at her life and finds out some suprising things about herself.
I wasn't sure about the main character at first as she did just seem to be bit careless and ditsy, but as the story progresses we find out why she is like she is and she becomes more vulnerable. There is also an interesting story about the background to her family relationship dynamics, which has a suprising twist! I enjoyed the references to heŕ growing collection of house plants. A fun read!
I loved this book so much I actually went out and bought more of Lucy Dillion's back catalogue I had never read. I felt extremely called out by what Robyn went through and was a perfect description of how it feels to have ADHD! (Plus the cleaning tips were so useful!)
I was not expecting some of the twists and turns and they were very well fleshed out and fitted beautifully with the story.
Irresponsible Adult by Lucy Dillon is the perfect book to read to feel warm and fluffy after a hard day. It's a quick read and it is lovely, relatable, witty and fun
Previously a successful estate agent, Robyn becomes overwhelmed by work, then life, and has a huge wake-up call when her sister Chloe offers her a job. Robyn thinks she will be doing the marketing for Chloe's cleaning company but nope, here comes one heckuva wake-up call and life change
Lucy Dillon writes in a way that is very relatable, a great wit and says the quiet part out loud. Fun, a great concept with some blinding twists and all in all lovely read
Thank you to Netgalley, Hodder & Stoughton and the author Lucy Dillon for this lovely ARC. My review is left voluntarily and all opinions are my own
What a great read! Some great twists that I didn’t see coming, and some great cleaning tips.
Robyn had a lot of relatable qualities, she’s coasting by hoping it’s enough and hoping she’s being ‘adult’ enough. You could see she was struggling from the beginning, she felt overwhelmed by life, by paperwork, time management, and forming friendship bonds. We see her growing and learning, Jim is great at helping her without even knowing he’s doing it. Robyn may be a procrastinator but she does take time to talk to her cleaning clients, even when she’s not supposed to, it’s through these connections that she useable to identify what could have been holding her back and takes step to sort herself out. She also inadvertently helps Jim to see that making a human connection with people is good and can enrich your life.
The family twists with her sister Cleo, they were so not on my radar and I was just as shocked as Robyn and Cleo. Watching the family try to navigate this huge life changing news was touching and I think really brought them together and made them stronger. It really made me think more about ‘assigned’ roles amongst siblings and how hard it can be to be something other than what you’ve been type cast as whether it’s accurate or not.
A great read and very thought provoking from start to finish.
I usually love Dillons books but I found it really tricky to get into this one and just didn't find myself particularly warming to the characters. I didn't dislike it, however it felt quite forgettable and I found myself having to 'make' myself read it rather than not being able to put the book down
It took a while to get into this story. I usually love Lucy Dillon's books, but I found this one lacking in depth and I couldn't possibly relate or even warm to the main character even towards the end. The secondary characters ( her sister, her family, Jim and friends) are more relatable and feel more real. I must confess this book didn't completely convince me although it's been a nice enough and smooth read, full of twists and turns, enough suspense and hints to keep the reader entertained and curious until the end. I will keep on reading Dillon's works only this one isn't my particular favourite.
Thank you to NetGalley, Hodder & Stoughton and the author for an early copy.

I love Lucy Dillon books, but did take my time to warm to this one. However, Robyn is someone i think we can all identify with or at least know someone like her! The drawer full of stuff to deal with later, the clutter in our houses. Robyn is outed in the most modern of ways at her job, via TikTok and is immediately fired. because of her slovenly ways. With a realisation that money is of an instant need, she goes to see her sister Cleo who owns her own successful cleaning business. Cleo seems to have her life sorted, and puts Robyn to work with Jim, her best cleaner. Robyn is mortified that she has to clean and is working in the background to try to get her feet bacon the property ladder. She spontaneously gives her savings to a property developer in the hope that she has invested for her future. The ensuing chaos of Robyns life starts to unravel and with a family secret that comes out, that affects both Robyn and Cleo. Is Cleo's life as perfect as it appears? By the end, I was totally rooting for Robyn to keep her plant alive and hoping that Robyn and Cleo 's relationship would thrive as well. The cleaning tips at the start of every chapter was the icing on the cake!
I love Lucy Dillon’s books & while this was somewhat different to her other ones, I really enjoyed it!
I'm such a strong fan of Lucy Dillon's books and whilst this one is maybe more of a serious look at adulthood and there's less dog-related content than previously, it is so well written and thought-provoking.
Initially, I am sure most readers will be banging their heads in dismay at Robyn's actions (or lack of) as I was, yet as the story develops we see why this is, we also understand so much about her relationship with her sister Cleo and why their Mum is so closed off about discussing her own family.
I thought the representation in this book was brilliantly done and whilst I felt the ending just slightly lacked a little bit of depth, particularly on the romance side, I really loved the character development and story arc.
Absolutely fabulous! Devoured this in one day! Sisters Chloe and Robyn couldn’t be more opposite. Chloe owns a cleaning agency; which runs like clockwork; and Robyn has just been sacked from her job as an estate agent. Chloe offers Robyn a job; Robyn thinks she’s going to be a marketing manager, but ends up cleaning; working with ‘uptight’ Jim. Robyn thinks she above the role of cleaner; but after her huge mistake at work; she struggling to find another job. Meanwhile; she’s invested her savings in a scheme that seems too good to be true; and family secret explodes all their lives! This book was truly a fabulous read.
I love a good sister novel and this one hit all the right boxes. I live a good sister who has it all together vs a sister who is flying by the seat of her pants. I loved that all is not what it seemed, lessons were learned, and it was a great look at modern adulthood in todays society. Highly highly recommend. Very easy to keep reading and be entertained. I hope to read more from this author in the near future as ai really liked her writing style.
What can I say, I absolutely blumming loved this book! By the end of the book I was cheering loudly for Robyn! Warm, genuinely laugh out loud funny, surprisingly emotional, and populated by wonderful, likeable characters. I didn’t want the book to end. Please, please, please can we have more Robyn, Cleo, Jim and the rest of the supporting cast ( including Terry!)? Highly recommended ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
