Life Review..?
Two sisters, two worlds apart - but then, nobody is really perfect, are they? When Robyn is unexpectedly humiliated and fired from her job, sister Cleo steps up and offers a lifeline. The trouble is that, for Robyn, the whole thing comes with responsibility. Is it time for a life review? With a keenly observed and deftly drawn cast of characters, an enjoyable and engaging narrative and a plotline laced with wry humour, this is a heartwarming read.
Never ever put your flip flops in the dishwasher to clean them, despite that being a cleaning hack in this book. You'll end up with micro plastics clinging to your cutlery and crockery. Seriously!
But about the book: another story about how we live in a 'deafening and demanding' society and all the expectations that come with that. Robyn thinking she is a failure, because she thinks she doesn't live up to what her potential could have been. A timely topic of people thinking not being good enough.
And yet.., I couldn't quite get a feeling for the three main characters Robyn, Cleo, and their mum. All of them struggling with things which clashed in the end, but that were somehow resolved after a few weeks went by, while their struggles to get back on their feet were somehow not part of the story.
Also: this book is flat regarding diversity when it comes to skin color, sexual orientation, religion, history, cultural background, you name it. There are more flavors of the human kind. Unfortunately, I keep adding that to a lot of reviews on books I've read recently...
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of the book.
This was an amazing read due to having such an amazing main character in Robyn who is a successful estate agent until the paperwork piles up then she can’t cope and things get missed leading to a her losing her job in a very humiliating manner. Robyn is very, very well written as the things she struggles with in life are so well documented and for me it was almost instantly obvious why she finds life so difficult but fabulous watching her rebuild her life whilst joining up the dots and getting back in control. The dynamics of her family were great and her strait laced coworker Jim offered a great balance to her chaos. This was a fantastic character read and I think Lucy Dillon’s best book yet.
Oh my goodness, I loved this book and ended up reading into the night to finish it.
Robyn works as an estate agent but she can be chaotic and disorganised and she ends up having to work for her sisters cleaning company and re-evaluates her life.
Robyn was such a loveable character and I loved reading how, bit by bit, she accepts who she is and adds some order to her life.
Of course there's the additional family drama and romance but I'm not going to spoil that by giving anything away.
So happy to have a new book by Lucy Dillon.
