High school romance in the time of COVID-19, a novel concept. Mizuha is the luckiest girl in school surrounded by four gorgeous childhood friends, who she of course doesn’t see as potential love interests (yet). What starts as a standard harem sports romance turns into something more with the shadow of the pandemic creeping in. As club activities are postponed and ultimately canceled, Japan’s idealized vision of the high school experience is nudged slightly off-kilter.
Each of the male characters falls into standard romance archetypes which I don’t necessarily mind, but not enough time is given to any particular character for me to feel invested. The problem ended up becoming my one major critique of this first volume, which is that the pacing was just way too fast. The plot and characters ended up feeling underdeveloped, and there was simply not enough build-up for these characters and their relationships with one another before the declarations of love started getting thrown around. The romantic scenes are heart-pounding for sure, but there was no emotional weight to them, which made these scenes feel like they were not earned.
The promised confession in the synopsis was sweet, but it quickly becomes uncomfortable with a lead that is just too pushy. While it’s not unrealistic (it happened to me as a teen as well) it was pretty overwhelming. Despite my reservations, I’m sufficiently intrigued by the story and characters that I do want to continue the series and see where it goes, and am hopeful that the pacing issues will get worked out over time.
I wanted to be a fan of this considering how much I love Shojo, but it fell a little flat for me. The pacing of the story as well as the plot were off to me. It kind of felt like we were reading 4 different chapters from 4 separate volumes, instead of the single issue. Mizuho was unnecessarily rude for the majority of the volume, and it really killed her likeability to me. However, Kizuki's persistence, for a lack of more serious term, wasn't a great addition either. I still had a good time reading this and might consider giving volume 2 a shot to see if my opinions still stand.
As always, thank you to NetGalley for the ARC.
This was so cute! I love childhood friend trope and as I used to be on a swim team I’m loving that aspect. I did feel the pacing was a little off particularly at the beginning there was a massive info dump but the author seemed to get more into a regular groove by the end of the book. I’m a bit picky about artwork but I really loved this and I’m very excited to keep reading. (I’ve already got my library to get in the rest of the series so far!).
not a fan of the covid aspect, but loved loved loved the childhood friends trope (it’s my favourite who would’ve thought). a pretty cute story over all and it’s gorgeously done.
Chapters 1-4 of the manga
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
This book is peak high school shoujo romance. I read and enjoyed the mangaka's other work "I Fell in Love After School", so I had high hopes. This manga did not disappoint at all! Looking forward to the next volume and anime adaptation for sure.
With thanks to netgalley for giving me the chance to review this Manga
Anyway, I'm falling in Love with you, is a perfect romance from friends to more, set during a pandemic. The artwork is super cute
I completely forgot I read this ACR awhile ago, but my rating has changed a bit as I have read so much more since then.
I would say it's about 3.5 stars, but depending on the reading mood I am in could be 4. There are points I liked and many where it follows the normal tropes.
-friends to lovers
-love triangle possibly?
It feels like there will be a love triangle going on with other members of the friend group and probably cause lots of issues.
I was approved for this well after the release date for this, but this was a very good manga. I can't wait to see what else will happen in the next volume. Thank you NetGalley for an arc of this manga.
Cute story, romantic, friends to lovers with good artwork. It has feels and is a nice manga to read if you like romance.
Really sweet and off to a great start. Although it does seem like we are going to get major love-triangle (?) action going on which could destroy the group. She's having a bad birthday in 2030 at the beginning of the book and that kinda negative vibe has me worried about what is going to happen to all of them. I'm a little apprehensive about continuing.
I like the artwork of this one. But I would really appreciate it if there was something more representative to distinguish between Shin Kashiwagi and Airu Izumi. When I was reading, I couldn't tell who was who. So it was difficult for me to get into the story.
I don’t read much shoujo (and definitely not many reverse-harems) but when I saw a sports romance set against the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic on Netgalley, I absolutely had to give it a go!
That said, whilst the concept had pore and the art was cute, I didn’t really vibe with any of the characters or the plot so I doubt that I’ll be continuing the series.
A very sweet and cute manga volume. I am so relieved to see a new era of romances! This volume is great for new manga readers to dip their toes into shojo manga or that realm of it. It is also a breath of fresh air in between heavy series.
Super cute ya Manga about the pandemic. Friends to lovers is one of my favorite tropes and this manga has that!
First I want to thank netgalley for providing me with this manga. It tells us the story of Mizuha, who is going to turn 17, the only ones present are her friends. Mizuha has a crush on a senpai, however he does not reciprocate, everything gets complicated when one of her friends confesses to her. It is a first introductory volume, it introduces us to the protagonist and her friends, a group of just boys and her. From what I could deduce from this first volume, there will be a harem, it shows that the other friends also have feelings for her. Although it was a quick read, it didn't kill me, I felt it was very cliche or maybe I'm no longer in this type of reading mood. but someone else may be interested in this type of romance. I give it 3 out of 5 stars
Manga isn't something I typically read, unless I've enjoyed the anime first. However, I really enjoyed this cover and the concept of a childhood friends to lovers during the pandemic. I haven't read anything that has the pandemic present in the book so I was intrigued, enough time has gone by that I thought it would be interesting to be taken back to it. I thought it was quite brilliant how Haruka decided to tell the story as recollection of these events 10 years later! I thought Mizuha was cute and Kizuki is to die for, it's only volume 1 though so there's still much to be explored and I want to see more of the other guys in their friend group! I'll definitely be reading the rest of the series!
This was a beautifully drawn story (some panels were masterpieces they were so pretty), I wasn’t completely blown away by the plot but I would be willing to continue the series another volume to see what happens and make a decision later on.
A cute little story in which he falls first. And we got a cliffhanger at the end so I'm definitely excited for part 2. Also that the story starts at the future and goes back to ten years earlier makes the whole thing interesting.
3.5 stars.
This was a cute start to the series! I’m intrigued since it starts 10 years in the future but then goes back to 2020. This whole volume takes place in high school. The main character Mizuho is friends with four boys, and one of them Kizuki, confesses his feelings for her. Parts of this were cute but some was also uncomfortable with how he was trying to force himself onto her. It ended off on a cliffhanger and I would definitely pick up the next volume!
I read this first volume in one sitting and it went by too fast! By the end I found myself itching to turn pages and see where everything goes next! The story is about a friend group of mostly boys and 1 girl all in school together during COVID. It's got a bit of mystery, a decent amount of "will they or won't they", and slice of life school student scenes. I will definitely be picking up the next volume soon! I would recommend this to people who want to read about a girl exploring who she wants to become as she grows up or to someone that likes romance within friend groups.
