Wow! This is a wonderful compendium of activities that will get kids OUTDOORS and NOTICING the natural world around them. There's so much to do here, from color-sorting activities for younger children to recipes for making all kinds of edible goodies. There are instructions for dyeing fabric, making lip balm, and putting flowers in ice cubes. The book has both photos and gorgeous illustrations, and is PACKED with ideas and projects. I would imagine all homeschoolers would want to have a copy of this handy.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. This book is a great way to teach kids about the world around them and the introduction even taught me something. There were some cool ideas throughout and I found the balance between edible and non-edible activities and practical and just fun activities throughout the book was great too.
"Herbal Activities for Kids" by Molly Meehan Brown is a delightful and educational guide that introduces children to the wonders of herbalism. The book is beautifully organized, making it easy for parents, educators, and children to follow along. Each section is thoughtfully crafted, with simple yet informative explanations of various herbs, their uses, and their benefits. The activities range from creating herbal crafts and remedies, such as teas, salves, and bath soaks, to nature-based games and journaling prompts that encourage kids to connect with nature.
A favorite aspect about the book is how it emphasizes sustainability and respect for nature, teaching kids not only how to use herbs but also how to cultivate an appreciation for the environment. Overall, Herbal Activities for Kids is a wonderful addition to any family’s bookshelf. It inspires curiosity, encourages outdoor exploration, and fosters a deeper connection with the natural world.
5⭐️
Introducing little ones to the herbal world of healing and crafts through nature. This book is full of mindful herbal activities that keep you grounded and present by tapping into all of the 5 senses.
🎨 Although the author labels this as a children’s book, my inner child is BEGGING me to do each and every one of these activities! This isn’t just for kids - it’s for any nature-lover that wants to unite their creative side with plants.
🪴 Each page is curated with, with images and illustrations, directions, tips and fun facts. There are 50 activities, each very worthy of making it into the book.
A sampling of my favorite features:
* Nature mandalas
* Kitchen scrap gardening
* Elderberry syrup
* Fairy Berry tea
* Fire Cider
* Herbal pizza
* Bee Balm ice pop
* Lemon Balm lip balm
* Mugwort dream portal
* Plant wind chimes
🌼 The author’s passion for herbalism really shines through as she shares how to build relationships between plants, land and people by tuning into nature’s rhythms and cycles.
👧🏻 These crafts, recipes and projects are SO perfect for me, that I really must beg the author to strike-through the part of the title that says “for kids.” Or, at least change it to say “for kids and your inner child”…?
📖 I need a hard copy of this book so I can take it out to my garden with me and start crafting. This one is worth it’s weight, y’all. Buy the book!
📌 I plan to try some of these soon. I’ll post to my blog www.hippie-blossom.com if you want to subscribe for updates.
A heartfelt thanks to NetGalley, my favorite Storey Publishing (who always publishes the BEST books), the author Molly Meehan Brown and all of her contributing friends for allowing me a complimentary ARC to review. It’s been my pleasure, and I hope to get my hands on a hard copy soon! 💕
I really liked all the activities and pictures. I think it will help encourage kids to go outdoors and get out in nature.
The book is an absolutely beautiful delight. Though targeted towards kids I know many adults who would love to take part in the activities, recipes, and knowledge gaining housed in this book. This is a wonderful first book about Herbalism and the ways we can work with nature. It provides a load of information in digestible bits, as well as fun activities and recipes I can't wait to try. Sprinkled throughout are also beautiful poetry, and extra sustainability tips, like the foragers code of ethics.
Truly a delight.
Herbal Activities for Kids is a delightful book with so many fun ideas when harvesting flowers and herbs. My children are 2, 5, and 7 and LOVE playing outside and collecting items from nature, including herbs. If I showed them this whole book, they would want do ALL of the things at once, so I must plan accordingly and choose a few a week. There are some functional uses for herbs included such as for healing and calming (recipes, teas, lip balm, room spray, etc). There are fun arts and crafts projects like a color wheel, mandala, wind chimes, pressed flowers, and my personal favorite- making a pen out of a twig and ink from berries. I love that this book encourages respect and appreciation for nature such as individual responsibility to prevent over-harvesting and one’s own personal history associated with herbalism. There are also fun and interesting facts about herbs and their uses throughout the book. I would highly recommend this book to ANY nature lovers. Thank you NetGalley and Storey Publishing for the opportunity to read and review this title.

Will definitely try some of the activities when my kids are off school

Herbal Activities for Kids is full of beautiful illustrations and pictures and the activities are easy to follow along with lots of information on different herbs and their uses
First, many thanks to Netgalley and Storey Publishing for access to the digital ARC. I loved this title, I am always looking for titles to add in to my homeschooling resources, this one will certainly be added! This work is split up in to easy to pick from sections, using senses at the forefront. I can see these activities being appropriate for all children with proper supervision regardless of age. 50 different activities gives nearly a year full of weekly activity studies. I will cherish this title in my homeschooling regime. Exceptional! Beautiful!
I absolutely adore this. I am a huge advocate for learning how to be self sufficient. I do think it should be used, but also but fun, and easy to do. This book is perfect for parents if they decide to be hands on, or not. The visuals and step by step instructions help aid a child or parents to do each one. I love how it tells you the importance, teaches you about herbs as well. It is vibrant in colors, and SO many of them I used while teaching my kids. Elderberry DIY was a nice added touch, my kids loved the herbal popsicles, making kale chips, Flower crowns, edible ink! There is SO much more you can do in this book! I tested about 17 of the things in this book and have nothing but high praise!
I adored this book! Although it's intended for children, there are so many crafts inside that I would love to try as an adult. The illustrations are beautiful and the activities are the right balance of educational and fun. I will definitely be buying a copy for the little ones in my life when this is published. Thank you for the advance copy!
This is a sweet herbal book for young children with a range of mostly very simple ways to connect with herbs through activities like sprouting, making nature mandalas, drawing with blackberry ink, starting elderberry cuttings, making herbal oxymels, making a flower press, writing nature poetry, making flower ice cubes, and so on. I loved the diversity of the people who contributed projects. Colorful illustrations accompany each one, with occasional photos. Best suited for younger children, though a few are more appropriate for older kids like making plant paper with soda ash. It also includes good basic information for kids about herbs and how they work.
I read a temporary digital copy of this book via NetGalley.
This is a beautiful book and really enjoyable to browse and read but a bit disappointing when it comes to the activities. We couldn’t find anything in it that we could do immediately without going to the shop first to buy some sort of crafting materials (some of which I’m not even sure where we would buy). The children found this frustrating as each thing would take planning and a trip to the shops beforehand, nothing could be done impromptu (and these sorts of activities end up costing a lot!).
Really lovely looking book but not ideal for impatient youngsters and not wholly accessible for everyone.
Herbal Activities for Kids :50 Nature Crafts, Recipes, and Garden Projects. This is an excellent book for getting children back into nature and in the great outdoors. Some excellent activities and learning opportunities, so the book would be a good resource for teachers and parents alike. The illustrations are lovely and the instructions clear and easy to follow. A good book to refer to again and again. Children will love it.
This book will be such an amazing resource for summer camp. I cannot wait to try these activities with my students. They are fun, educational, and affordable.
This is such a fun book of herbal activities and recipes for kids. Simple instructions and good illustrations make it a good choice for everyone.
