Great characters and a drama field crime thriller. I did not realise this was the third in the series however I did felt it worked well as a standalone. I’ve got a great insight into the characters which has made me want to go back and read the previous two full of twists and turns And surprises in great characters that you feel completely invested in.
I love David Fennel and was very excited to purchase a special edition copy of The Silent Man with sprayed edges. The problem is it’s too beautiful to read so I was so glad when I found the audiobook! Another twisty, dark story which hooks you straight in and will keep you up at night! 10/10 recommend!
I really loved this book! An exciting story which has stuck in my head and kept me thinking about it while away.
I liked the main characters, the story was sad in parts and made you care what happened to them.
The narration had good ranges with voices and accents and it was a good performance.
I didn't realise this was the 3rd book in a series before I started it, the main story can be read as a standalone book but there was also a longer running story which took me a while to put together.
I received the audiobook version from NetGalley. The narrator was easy to listen to & apart from not realising it was book 3, it was quite easy to follow, however the author did switch between first & last names which was confusing to begin with. There are 3 main threads to the story, the first is an ongoing confrontation with the local gang boss, the other 2 are the main plots of the book that like any good thriller go alone their own course until they twist together. I thought I had the connection worked out, I was close but then the final pieces came together at the end that shifted the whole story.
Unfortunately, this one wasn’t for me. I found parts of it would keep my interest and other parts wouldn’t, so I found that I wasn’t reaching for it and took a long time to finish it. Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers.
A father is murdered in the dead of night in his London home, his head wrapped tightly in tape, a crude sad face penned over his facial features. But the victim's only child is left alive and unharmed at the scene.
Brilliant crime, thriller. This was the first David Fennell book I have read so I will be going back to the beginning of the trilogy to read them all in order! This book has made a fan out of me.
📚 Book Review 📚
This is the third instalment in a series of books from this author. Although I didn’t realise this, it made no difference to my enjoyment of this story and can be read and listened to in its own.
There are a spate of particularly nasty murders in London, all of the victims are parents and all of the murders occur in and around their homes. All of the victims are found with their faces bound and gruesome masks drawn on their faces. DI Grace Archer and her partner, Harry Quinn, are tasked with finding who is responsible but Grace has a whole load of problems of her own to deal with.
There are three story lines here, which all weave into one. The introduction of the serial killer is very, very clever. I couldn’t tell who it was until very near the end, but I can’t tell you why because that will give the game away! The murders are brutal and the reaction of the characters, realistic and relatable.
I listened to this one on audiobook and I loved the narrators voice and style. This is a great read!
I’d like to thank Bonnier UK Audio, NetGalley and the author for the arc and the fantastic opportunity, in exchange for my honest feedback 😊
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
Great storyline. Didn’t immediately recognise the shifting timelines, but pulled the various strands of the storyline together. Soothing narrator.
Really enjoyed this Audio book and it had a really good storyline all the same and a great introduction to Police detectives Grace Archer and Harry Quinn and looking forward to hopefully further good books in this series.
One criticism was the using the first names and then the surnames of the main characters I did find that confusing at first
This story is set around the murder of a father. On discovery, his head is wrapped in tape with a sad face drawn over the top. Left unharmed at the scene is a child.
Following the story of 2 detectives, we are brought into ongoing criminal cases whilst the elusive killer strikes again.
I thankfully received a copy of this book early from #NetGalley. What initially drew me in was the cover. It was intriguing to me and the storyline sounded right up my street.
I listened via audio which is a book format I am fairly new to. In contrast to others I have listened to this book had just a single narrator however the accents were easy enough to distinguish after a period of time so it wasn’t difficult to differentiate between characters. Overall I felt the narrator was well suited to the story although it perhaps could have used a deeper voice. However, what was intriguing to me was a feminine light voice in opposition to a dark narrative which really highlights the name of #TheSilentMan. I would have preferred to have elements such as sound effects or music to enhance the audio as this is something I find can really add to a story and make it come to life in a way reading a print can’t.
The flow of the book was ok. There were times where I felt it was a bit disjointed but I think this is more to do with the story than the narrator themselves. What was helpful was the easy identification of each chapter and they seemed to be short enough that they didn’t feel like they dragged on.
Onto the story itself. Having not realised there were 2 prior books until I got to reading reviews I feel I should go back and read these as although the book can be read solo, I feel it would have made a lot more sense to have the back story to the detectives and the Jack White narrative. This seemed out of place in the book as someone reading just this book which may not have been the case had I read prior novels. It almost felt like there were 3 separate stories that was disjointed to me. Two of them did end up coming together in the end and made sense but not having a clear understanding of the timeline made it difficult to follow until much later in the book. I think this was a disservice to the book because the silent man angle was an interesting read. There wasn’t anything too graphic in the book although there is an element of child cruelty so there is a need to beware if this is something which may impact you.
I enjoyed the main characters, there was enough information to get a feel for who they were without it being too much in terms of the character. Although I did find there was little in terms of development for some of the characters more than others.
Overall there were definitely elements of the book I enjoyed but others which were frustrating to me. I would give it 3 stars, there’s definite potential but some challenges which I found difficult to get into. I also found it took me a while to get into the book because of how disjointed it felt at times. When the Jack White storyline ended it felt far easier to follow and enjoy. If you have read prior novels by the other I would give it a go but wouldn’t recommend to start with this novel unless you’re dedicated to get to the end of it.
Thank you Bonnier UK Audio for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
Brilliant - fantastic ! Great audio and an excellent thriller with a detective and villain
I absolutely loved the Narrator as it made the audio easy to follow which kept me gripped and interested throughout
Thank you to Netgalley and Bonnier Publishing
This is the 3rd in the DI Grace Archer series. This is probably not my favourite, there was a little too much going for me to really get in to the storyline. There were a lot of characters and various plots, one of which abruptly ended. Trying to juggle the serial killer angle with the gangster angle along with the background of the serial killer was overwhelming.
I predicted the major twist in the storyline so that was a bit of a let down too.
Overall, I felt it was a bit messy, lacked depth and I didn't love the characters.
However, this ARC was an audiobook and I really enjoyed the narration, accents and intonation. There were a few long pauses but I found it enjoyable overall.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to listen to this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I have read a digital copy of this and I loved it. Perfect continuation of a fabulous series. The audio book was therefore a second 'read' through.
I enjoyed it as much as the first time round, the narration was great, really spot on. I thought the narrator did a fantastic job of capturing the characters and pacing. Nothing felt rushed or misunderstood.
I'd recommend the audiobook with this narrator to anyone who likes a gory serial killer thriller/police procedural. Congratulations to the author again for another fabulous read.
What a stunning tale.
Brilliant characters with a shocking and twisted storyline.. What else could you wish for in a crime thriller read that keeps you on the edge of your seat?
Exquisitely narrated and fast paced, you won’t want to stop listening until the small hours.Just leave the nightlight on!
Highly recommended.
This is a perfectly good book. I don't think there is anything wrong with it I just feel like I read this before, it's your typical thriller murder mystery it wasn't giving me anything new so it's 3 stars for me.
The silent man - David Fennell
The premise of the book is brilliant and I love the narrator the only problem is keeping up with the storyline when I have to keep replaying the same part because the audio keeps stopping and skipping parts. I gave up at 68.4% and I’m sorry I can’t give a proper review. Thank you for the opportunity, I did try!
When I requested this book I didn’t realise that it was part of a series but it can very easily be read as a stand alone.
I really enjoyed this one and it was very easy to follow even with the multiple story lines that took place. I liked a lot of the characters in this book which made the book even more enjoyable. I had some predictions throughout but never guessed who the killer was and it was a bit of a surprise.
I was hooked from beginning to end of this one and found that it was a really quick listen.
I will definitely go back and read the first two books in the near future.
I didn't realise this was part of a series when I started it, but it didn't really matter. I would have liked more info on the characterisation, which would have been in the first 2 books, but there was enough to allow me to enjoy it.
I listened to the audiobook version and the narrator was engaging and kept me interested.
Good story, easy to follow, kept me interested.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC.
I found this book heartbreaking. Cleverly told in two timelines but you aren't aware of this until much later. The stories focus on Bryn, a child terrorised by an abusive father with a mental illness, a violent gang led by the man who murdered Archer's father, and a series of horrific, torturous murders carried out on parents by the Silent Man.
I found the story of Bryn so upsetting that it eclipsed everything else in this amazing book. His story was well told with care and understanding.
The 3rd in a series this also works as a stand alone story. The language was very gritty and rhe action starts straight away. This was my first outing with the characters i throughly enjoyed every second. At tines it appeared there were 2 or 3 separate stories. I loved it when they were pulled together. The narrator gave real emotion to all characters. The subject matter was tough going but it was paced correctly and felt a short listen. I could see this as a film. Very entertaining. Highly recommended brilliant development characters action packed plot. Perfect high quality audio narration. Thank you netgallery and publisher and author and narrator for this 5 star listen.
