Having enjoyed a few of his other books, this was a treat, full of his caustic humour and wry observations about the mundanity and oddity of life.
However, underneath its hood is also a deeply heartfelt and uncynical portrait of two men finding love after a while being single. The ways these two men bring their insecurities, fears and foolhardy hope was stunning- this book is gorgeous, sexy, and kind.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review.
'Perry is going on a date. The word itself strikes him as ridiculous, inappropriate for a man of his age. But if he were not to call it a date, then what the hell was it?'
I really enjoyed this book, which opens with two middle-aged Australian men going on, well, a date! Perry and Ivan have baggage, and the book develops their tentative relationship, from first meeting to moving in together and beyond. Told from differing perspectives, this is a tender and honest exploration of being an older gay man, taking in their friends and past history, all of which shapes a life.
Beautifully written, this is another excellent book from Christos Tsiolkas, and definitely a recommended title. 4.5 stars.
(With thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an ARC of this title.)
Always known for his bold story telling, Tsiolkas doesn’t disappoint with his latest. A wonderful and tender love story between two men who have been damaged by both life and past relationships. A touching tale and one you would be a fool to miss!

Thank you to the publisher for the early copy!!
A story of love, across different eras, including all types of love and relationships.
An enjoyable read full of description and history.
An interesting exploration of finding queer love in later life, past loves, and what it means to not be your authentic self throughout your life. I’m not sure about shifting the main POV for the last fifth, but enjoyed it nonetheless.
A love story between two middle-aged men scarred by past relationships. This book offers a beautiful and tender exploration of love, reflecting on lost love and the lingering pain it leaves behind. It's a gentler tale, showcasing the author's masterful and beautiful use of words.
