I enjoyed the first Volume of "Eat Your Heart Out" and I'm definitely interested in reading the following Volumes. It's a story about following your dreams, even if it is scary and will change your whole life, about found family and community and freedom of expression.
Thank you to NetGalley and Oni Press for the e-arc!
Eat Your Heart Out reads like a modern fairytale with its themes of self-discovery and family. The story follows Blanca who decides to run away from her controlling mom and move to NYC to pursue fashion design. She has no job or place to live but ends up having a chance encounter with Emile. Emile provides her with a home and encouragement. I thought this was endearing despite its serious topics and worth the read. I will definitely check out the next volume to see where the story goes.
Such a fun story to read! I loved the characters and the found family trope. Most of this volume introduces the characters but it ends with a cliffhanger, so I can't wait to read the next volume. I would defiantly recommend this book for young queer people looking for some fun representation.
Oh my god Yes this was so good! This arc spends most time setting up the characters, it's just vol 1, and their connections to eachother but it was so interesting. My little queer hart is happy.
"Eat Your Heart Out" is a coming-of-age graphic novel that follows Blanca on a journey of self-discovery. While plot-wise the book is not really strong, the novel is filled with interesting characters and lots of queerness, which is always much appreciated. What I enjoyed the most was the constant presence of the found family trope and the important message of doing what you truly love in life. The pacing was a bit off at times and I found that some situations were not very realistic, but overall the book delivers and I'm interested in giving future volumes a try!

Eat Your Heart Out Vol. 1 by Terry Blas and Matty Newton is an absolute gem for those craving a heartwarming journey of self-discovery and belonging. Blanca's pursuit of her passion amidst the bustling streets of New York City is both inspiring and uplifting, offering readers a delightful blend of LGBTQIA+ representation and themes of identity and empowerment.
The story follows Blanca's escape from her mother's stifling expectations to chase her dreams of fashion design in the Big Apple. Upon her arrival, she finds refuge with the endearing baker Emile and his eclectic group of friends. Each character brings their own unique flavor to the narrative, and I couldn't help but feel like I was part of their quirky, supportive family.
The charming cast and their dynamic interactions gave me sitcom vibes, and I found myself rooting for Blanca as she navigated the challenges of pursuing her dream. Her journey resonated deeply with me, and I admired her courage and determination in the face of adversity.
Overall, Eat Your Heart Out Vol. 1 is a delightful read that celebrates friendship, acceptance, and the pursuit of one's passions. I eagerly anticipate further installments and the opportunity to delve deeper into the lives of these captivating characters.
So; the vibes were there, the story was there, the pacing was there, it was beautifully drawn and the queer rep was perfect. However, the characters were just not believable. There's an 18 y/o gal who comes to NYC and automatically finds: friends, a house, a date, and also seems to just be super wise and talented. It's all cute but I want something more real.
This was a very cute start to a series of a Midwest girl chasing her dreams in the Big Apple. It's a very common story trope, but this time, it's full of LGBT characters. I found the characters both realistic and endearing, though a bit idealized. There isn't really much about the larger plot, this volume focuses more on the characters and their backstories. There are a LOT of characters in the main cast, almost too many. With so many characters, it can get a little messy as to who is who and who has what back story. There are only whispers about what is going on with Blanca's mother back home. This was a cute start, but it's not a strong one. Hopefully, the story gets stronger by the next volume.

I am adoring this story and super excited for volume two. I always love a found family focus and this is setting up those relationships very well. Blanca is wonderful and I’m enjoying learning more about her and all her new friends. I’m also very curious to see what develops with Charlie. Overall I love the art style, am intrigued by all the characters and their backstories, and looking forward to seeing how they grow and the plot expands. Great first volume to introduce us to this series.
Comics are meant to be fun, and sometimes fairytale in outlook. To be read and enjoyed. Sorry for the segway: What a ‘controlling, witch for a mother’!!!! Back to the fairytale. Blanca leaves home to follow her own dreams. But dreams aren’t matched in real life. Then serendipity smiles. She finds herself a place to stay, and becomes a positive influence in her flatmates life. Life is looking up for Blanca after all. But this is only vol 1. Will Blanca’s dreams be dashed as her mother finds a way to haul her back home? Thank you to ONI Press and NetGalley for the comic ARC. The views expressed are all mine.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this eARC of 'Eat Your Heart Out Vol. 1' by Terry Blas and Matty Newton.
'Eat Your Heart Out Vol. 1' is such a fun graphic novel. With a mixture of great storytelling and characters, they've got the story down to a T but then you get into the ART. The art is gorgeous and it's so unique, every character looks different and it just adds to the beautiful storytelling.
Graphic Novel palette cleansers are my favorite in between really heavy books and I completely devoured this one! It was fast paced, with a lot of representation in it for me. I also found the characters to be funny and relatable and could see many volumes coming from this dynamic. If you are into found families this book is for you and you won’t be able to stop yourself from falling in love with all the different characters we are introduced to. Definitely a 5 star read for me!
Eat Your Heart Out was drawn with beautiful artwork and had a wonderful story. It follows a young girl who races off to New York City to become a fashion designer. Its low stakes with some very well written side characters. The villain isn't even really a villain but a cut out of one, and in most stories, I would dock a star for that but here it worked like a charm. All the characters are loveable in some way and the representation is off the chart.
This book was fine but was just not for me. I loved the idea of it and the representation but I felt like it moved way too fast. The pacing felt super off. There were so many characters introduced so fast that it was hard to keep track of names and who they were. I’m sure I am in the minority here because the art style was gorgeous and the story is good, but like I said before it just wasn’t for me! And that’s okay:)
Ah, yes, I can already see the queer found family. Blanca runs away from her suffocating home and meets Emile in New York. She moves into their apartment and meets the entire cast of roommates and quickly bonds with them. This was a quick, fun, and a predictable read for me, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s pretty straightforward and low stakes, but I’m sure the next volume would present the challenges Blanca faces. As of now, I enjoyed her finding herself and fitting in with her newfound roommates and scene. I would definitely look out for its release and its subsequent volumes!
Thank you to Netgalley and Oni Press for the ARC! :>
This was great! This story is about Blanca, who runs away from her mother to follow her dreams in the big city (New York). She meets a kind baker who takes her in. The apartment is full of queer people who are trying to follow their own dreams. Frienships blossom between Blanca and the roommates and we follow them as they all help each other grow and achieve their dreams.
I LOVE found family and I LOVE all of these characters!! Definitely read this book if you also love the found family trope. The story did sometimes jump very quickly from one part to the next, which made a few parts more difficult to follow. This is why I didn’t rate the book 5 stars.
A fun adaptation of a classic story! It doesn't hold too close to the original story that it becomes predictable, but the occasional nods are cute! I like the characters and the art design is a lot of fun. I would enjoy reading the next book when it comes out
I want to say thank you to Netgalley for an advanced ARC of this graphic novel.
Reading this was fun and really enjoyable with a character that wants to create Their own path and you see her pushing though to do this, the main character at times I was like I want you to succeed to achieve ur dreams but want to make sure your protected too... this was a food read
3.5 stars
Very cute with a big twist at the end! I'd be interested to read the next volume in the future to see where this story goes next!
I requested this solely because I enjoyed Hotel Dare, also by Terry Blas, a few years ago. And I might just love this even more! I need volume 2 NOW.
This story is so charming. We follow Blanca, who leaves home at 18 to make it in New York. She quickly meets Emile and moves in with him and his many roommates, finding friendship and support. The book has such a large cast of characters, but everyone felt distinctive, and we got to meet everyone one on one, as Blanca has personal conversations with them.
I truly got sitcom vibes from this story, and it has the potential to go on for many installments. Be sure to preorder because you're in for a lot of fun!
