This was charming and sweet, with a message about how traffic and road rules can vary vastly, depending on where you live. It was fun and well illustrated, but not a plot heavy picture book. Ultimately, this was just fine - good for reading aloud, but not my favourite.
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. It's a great book about what a little boy and his cat see as they putt-putt through their city in a rickshaw. A great way for kids to see that things are different for other people and where they live.
In the bustling heart of the big city, where vehicles weave through crowded streets like colourful threads in a tapestry, young Ibraheem embarks on an unforgettable adventure. “Honk Honk, Beep Beep, Putter Putt!” by Rukhsana Khan, beautifully illustrated by Chaaya Prabhat, invites readers to hop aboard a rickshaw and explore the cacophony of sounds that fill the urban landscape.
Ibraheem, accompanied by his curious cat, Mitu, joins his father (affectionately known as Baba) on a rickshaw ride. As they navigate the busy streets, each vehicle they encounter communicates in its own unique language. The themes of sharing and respect, along with language and communication are beautiful told. The absence of traffic signals doesn’t hinder the vehicles’ ability to coexist harmoniously. Instead, they rely on their distinct sounds to navigate safely. Through this delightful read-aloud, Khan emphasizes the importance of sharing the road and respecting one another’s space.
Chaaya Prabhat’s illustrations burst with energy and colour. The vehicles come alive, each with its own personality. Readers will feel the hustle and bustle of the streets, the wind in their hair, and the thrill of the journey.
Khan’s poetic text captures the rhythm of the city, making it a joy to read aloud. Children learn about different modes of transportation and the power of communication. The diverse cast of characters reflects the vibrant tapestry of city life. Khan shares her experiences with city traffic worldwide, adding depth to the story.
“Honk Honk, Beep Beep, Putter Putt!” is a celebration of urban life, family bonds, and the magic of everyday moments. Whether you’re a parent reading to your child or a teacher sharing it in the classroom, this book will leave you smiling and humming along with the city’s symphony. Highly recommended!
Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Random House Canada for a temporary e-ARC in exchange for my honest review.
What a great picture book about vehicles and sharing the road! I think kids will love this books, and it's a great read aloud! There are so many opportunities for making fun driving sounds, and the repetition throughout is just perfect for young kids to keep them engaged. I really like this as an option for vehicle themed storytimes, as I feel there aren't a ton of diverse books out there about vehicles! I think this is a great one.
The illustrations are also great, and I loved the animals crossing in front of the vehicles and everyone stopping for them!
With a contagious title sure to engage young readers, this tale follows young Ibraheem and his cat Mitu along with his father Baba on a mission across town. This requires driving the family rickshaw through the busy and bustling streets. Baba tells Ibraheem that the road belongs to everyone, no matter their size or stature. With this message in mind, Ibraheem observes the way vehicles communicate with one another while keeping everyone safe. Using unique horn sounds, the drivers “talk” to each other and share the road, while Ibraheem and his father manage to navigate the busy streets and successfully arrive at their destination. This is a wonderful story that highlights the richness and dynamism of a city that could be anywhere in the world. With its richly colored, unique car designs and clever communication styles this story is sure to draw readers in and enrich their cultural awareness, worldly driving skills and more. Highly recommended for all young car lovers and for beginners who need an extra push to get on the road to fun reading!
This is the perfect book for any vehicle loving toddler. The use of onomatopoeia throughout the book made it fun and engaging and I loved how those words were in a different font and color. The illustrations are so bright and fun and the message of sharing the road and taking turns is a great message for little ones.
Honk Honk, Beep Beep, Putter Putt! is a perfect read-aloud! Join Baba, Ibraheem, & their cat Mitu on a delivery trip through a big busy city in Pakistan. Rukhsana Khan's lyrical sounds & repetition paired with Chaaya Prabhat's bright & colorful illustrations make for a vibrant adventure! The author's note at the end discusses the nonverbal conversations between drivers (with donkeys, horse carts, rickshaws, cars, taxis, buses, & beautifully decorated trucks) in busy streets around the world; communicating in an ingenious sort of language. The perfect book to include when talking about language, when discussing different vehicles, & road safety. This is a must-read, that I believe we will be reading on repeat!
Such a cute little read with beautiful illustrations. Was well liked by my toddler when test reading it. Would definitely recommend. Thanks for the opportunity to read!
A beautiful and lyrical book showing the sounds made by the various vehicles and animals on busy, busy streets. Kids will read and reread this fun book, mimicking the sounds of all of the vehicles again and again.
This was fantastic! I love the repetition and all of the sound words that make the reading experience so fun for kids. The illustrations are beautiful. I also loved the author’s note and how the language of honking is explained. Very fun book.
This was a very cute story about roads safety and noises of commuting in Pakistan. Kids will definitely enjoy this story.
Honk Honk, Beep Beep, Putter Putt! is an adorable children’s picture book about road safety and how drivers communicate with one another. Set in the busy streets of Pakistan, the story follows a young child and his cat as they ride in his father’s rickshaw. I loved the illustrations, which are bright and colourful. Overall, this is a fun picture book to emphasize the importance of sharing the road to children.
This book was so cute!! I read with my 6 year old niece and BEEP BEEP was heard for hours after. I liked being able to point out different cultural aspects to her; while she loved the gorgeous illustrations. Really good book’!!!
Honk Honk Beep Beep Putter Putt is a sweet lively story about navigating busy streets and being a courteous and cooperative community member. The story flows well and the illustrations and colorful and eye catching. This is the type of story that can be read over and over again with predictable refrains that kids can join in to read.
The story is perfect for discussing differences in cultural norms and habits. It also has strong theme of cooperation and turn taking that can help foster discussions at home or in a classroom setting. I enjoyed this and will be adding it into rotation of stories I read with my 6 year old nephew.
This is a children's book that I read with my twin boys. They loved this book so much, and I found the book to be cute. The pictures were bright and fun. I loved that all the cars had different sounds like one would say Honk Honk then the other one would say Beep Beep. We had a ton of fun reading this book. I received an ARC of this book. This review is my own honest opinion about the book like all my reviews are.
Vibrant, clear illustrations with white contrast are great for kids! Also, much of the sound noises (onomatopoeias) are in color to draw attention and potentially make it easier when reading aloud. I could see it becoming tiring to read this aloud in a large group using only one's voice, but if you could incorporate instruments or buttons/rattles to imitate each sound and give families/kids a role to act out, it could be a true performance! This book also has the educational element of sharing a bit about the laws of driving/the road in various areas. Definitely recommend for adding to a library's collection!
With its refrain of "honk honk, beep beep, putter putt" this is a picture book that cries outrm to be read aloud and participated in!
Bright, colourful illustrations with quirky details ( I particularly liked the little vignette of playing cricket in the road!) give lots to look at.
The author's explanation of what her experiences were of traffic in countries where everything seems chaotic, but is, in fact, much safer than it would first appear was a really nice touch.
I read it with my 4 year old grandson who quite enjoyed it, but was maybe a little perplexed with the setting as his life experience in Scotland was a bit too different to be able to identify easily with some of the story. He loved the refrain though!
This is a perfect book for any car or truck obsessed kid. My son loved yelled “honk honk, beep beep” along with me as we read and looking at all the different types of automobiles.
From a parents perspective, I loved thr different style of art work and seeing another culture represent in such a beautiful way.
Very cute book, with relative phrases kids will love saying along with you!
I loved all the onomatopoeia and repetition in Rukhsana Khan's story. It would make for a fun read aloud with children, especially with the colorful illustrations. The book reminded me of driving in the Dominican Republic with everyone honking their horns. I appreciated the message of people using their horns to talk with each other.
This reminds me of growing up overseas and how very different the driving was from driving in the US. I could hear the busy streets and I love the idea of writing out the way that horns and sounds communicate with each other and it not just being a 'hey im angry' like the stereotype tends to be.
