In the year 1944, Veronica toils tirelessly to make ends meet, her primary focus being on securing her next meal. The notion of someday owning her family's home flickers in her mind, a distant hope overshadowed by the harsh realities of daily life. Amidst her relentless work routine, Veronica brushes aside any whimsical thoughts that dare to intrude, including the unsettling whispers of a mysterious fire and the ghostly murmurs attempting to reach her. She also dismisses the lingering gaze of her boss's son, a distraction she cannot afford.

Despite her efforts to remain aloof, Veronica finds herself inexplicably drawn to Lazlo, a striking black soldier she encountered while processing enlistments at the draft office. As her fascination with Lazlo deepens, so too does her awareness of the dark undercurrents flowing through her hometown of Harrisville. Working in the cigarette factory, Veronica confronts the grim reality of her surroundings, where death lurks among the tobacco leaves alongside the insects.

With each passing day, Veronica's resolve to ignore Lazlo wanes, unravelling the veil of ignorance she once cloaked herself in. As she confronts the unsettling truths lurking beneath the surface of Harrisville, Veronica realises that the town's decay runs deeper than she ever imagined. It's a revelation that should have come as no surprise, given the eerie atmosphere that permeates her workplace—a place where death and decay intertwine amidst the tobacco fields.

This would not be a book I would of read especially as its apart of a series but the cover, WoW the cover caught my eye. What a beautiful book cover this is. The colours are so magical it just brings you in and says Pick me up and Read me......and I am so glad I did. But, its going to be a tough one!

Fanning Fireflies by L.S Delorme is the third book in the Limerent Series which is a romantic historical paranormal mystery. This book was slow to start off with, especially as I did not know what to expect. But, it was building up to become a very strong story and I really enjoyed it.

Some of this book was a hard read, but an interesting, especially to read. You learn about the Ku Klux Klan etc and the descriptions were accurate. Sometimes this book made me shout out aloud and re-read the way people spoke to and about each other - I was shocked, as this is the first book I have read where racism is rife in the Southern states and in Harrisville back in the forty's onwards.
It was an eye opener.

This book is set in 1944. Veronica lives with her mother Iona and her brother Franklin, he has a stutter. This makes him a big target for the town bullies, and the main bully is Tommy Sawika.
Veronica and her mother both work in the local cigarette factory and the owner of this factory is
Tommy’s father John, they only work there so they both can afford to eat. But, she hopes one day in the future she will have saved enough to own her own family home......for now, she can only dream. However, she does not have time to dream or have time for - the fire whispering to her, these are ghosts that are trying to talk to her to tell her things that are going to happen!

A handsome black young soldier called Lazlo arrives at the draft office and Veronica has to process his detail but she can't seem to stop herself. Her ability to ignore Lazlo evaporates, but there is a strong mutual connection between them both. They both know this is a dangerous road to go down especially as racism is rife where they live and all around them but their feeling are growing stronger for each other every time they see each other. Things happen that they can not control and they become closer.............They both have to be very careful and hope no one notices this attraction......They would be called outcasts and Lazlo would be beaten....and may face death. Wow!

This book is so strong and well written throughout. I am so glad every book is a different story and can be read as a standalone. I have purchased the other two previous books to read and add to my forever book collection.

But, remember this book was set in 1944, the language and the way they spoke black people etc would not be tolerated today. Phew as this book made me angry.

Big Thank you to Netgalley and @Literallypr for my copy of Fanning Fireflies and to be apart of this tour.

I wasn’t sure what to expect but given the time period I had prepared myself to be angry and let me tell you I was but this is not a bad thing. Delorme has brought to life the bigotry, unrest and injustice that was rife in the 40s. This book was a rollercoaster of emotions and I loved that Veronica stood up for not only herself but her family and those who she saw where being treat unfairly.

These themes take a rather central role to the plot but Delorme weaves in love and paranormal. I particularly liked that the love covers several aspects including familial as well as romantic. The paranormal element adds a nice little extra layer to the novel and I loved the way it was introduced.

The writing was easy to follow but engaging and really brought the past to life. This in turn lets the characters shine and come to life, including the vile ones. I will say this is a hard novel to read in some parts due to the accurate descriptions of the Ku Klux Klan or rather a wing/copy of it that is in this town. It will definitely make you angry but at the same time there are moments of joy and love in there. I will certainly be reading the previous two by these authors.
