This was a nice intro into why families might choose to homeschool. I thought it was a little long and a little repetitive. I also have done research for the last 8 years on homeschool theory, so the concepts were not new to me. However that doesn't mean this wouldn't be a good into for a parent who is interested in dipping their toe into homeschooling!
Our children deserve more than just an assembly line education. They deserve to be taught in a way that allows them to thrive as individuals and discover their purpose in life. But individualized lesson plans just aren't possible in a public school setting. So what's a parent to do? With practical tips and real life examples, authors Maren Goerss and Angela Sizer share their educational philosophy, and how they make education work for their own families.
Ok, let's just cut to the chase. I did not like this book. The subtitle is "a homeschool where children and parents thrive," but the authors start right off the bat about how they value all forms of education. While I do think public school is valuable for a small percentage of the population, the authors' praise of all educational forms confused me in a book about homeschooling. And this wasn't just a passing mention. It came up several times and caused the book to loose focus. The authors also had a definite bent about gender ideology and current hot button topics which seemed to be almost more important to them than the actual issue of homeschooling. In certain chapters, their personal beliefs on these issues nearlyt took up more space than the actual topic of education. Additionally, their chapters lacked focus and felt redundant... rambling over the same opinions multiple times. There are just so many good books that address homeschooling in a much more logical, comprehensive way. I wouldn't waste my time here.
*Disclaimer: I recieved a free copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
I’m preparing for our sixth year of homeschool and I’m always looking for ways to improve our homeschool so I was excited to get an advance reader copy of this book. When I started reading this book, I realized quickly that almost all the homeschooling books I’ve read since we started on our homeschooling journey 5 years ago were written from a Christian perspective. This book, which is not written from a Christian perspective, just felt different from most of my homeschool reads for that reason. This book is written by two former teachers with master’s degrees in education. I appreciated that this book was about homeschooling, while acknowledging that it might not be for everyone in every season and it didn’t feel like bashing “traditional school.” This is a great, non-judgmental book for those who are considering homeschool and weighing options.
Some of the key reminders from this book that I found helpful for me and where I am on my journey:
* Learning is not about the curriculum (a reminder I need often as someone who likes checklists and checkboxes).
* Our ideas of what homeschool should look like often get in the way of their learning
* Everything is learning (pay attention)!
* Create joy and remember to plan and have fun!
The authors of this book definitely lead a more “unschooling” approach to homeschool than that of our family. Even if unschooling doesn’t feel like the right fit for you family, this book definitely encourages you to “think differently about learning.”

As someone who is currently flexischooling my kids, I found this book very interesting and full of thought provoking ideas. Well worth a read for any parents of school aged kids.
I was excited to get a chance to read an advanced reader copy of this book. I’ve been homeschooling for a decade now, but it’s always helpful to take a step back and look at things from a fresh view. If I was considering homeschooling or fairly new to it, this book would be helpful. It’s full of stories from homeschooling families telling how they handled certain situations. It’s got some good advice. It’s easy to read, as if listening to a podcast or a conversation between a few folks chatting about how to homeschool.
I have been homeschooling my child and really enjoyed this book. I love that it doesn't knock the school system, but instead just states facts and lets the parents decide what's best for their child.
I loved reading this. My children aren't quite school age yet but this gave me the information I was needing to make a complete decision to homeschool them. I'll definitely be reading this again in a few years and maybe eventually getting a physical copy.
This was a great book. It was very educational and it brought up some great ideas. I would highly recommend this book if you are starting to homeschool.
As a newly homeschooling mom, I really enjoyed this book! I learned new things and was also reinspired and it confirmed my owns truths back to me. Highly recommend!
I gained access to this book as an early reader ARC. As someone who’s planning on moving to homeschooling in the next few months after a year of unrest from all three kiddos, this book was very comforting. It made a lot of my worries seem manageable, and my concerns and questions received answers I really wasn’t getting from the community through conversations thus far. I’m so grateful I had the opportunity to read this. Very well written and will be a resource for me to look back on for years to come!
