Highly anticipated book. This one broke me. I have a young son myself and as I read I kept thinking what if this happened to me? What would I do?
It was heart breaking, poignant and moving. I honestly didn't know who to root for. Everyone I guess. Then tension was intense. The descriptions were brilliant and the ending was pure perfection.
I won't say too much for fear of giving the game away but this book shocked me, terrified me and almost made me cry (almost).
Cannot say enough good things.
When I started to read Redemption, I knew nothing of this book. It had been recommended to me by a friend, a fellow book worm. I’m so glad that I blindly dived in, otherwise I would have missed out on this remarkable book.
We are introduced to Evie and Tobe. A young couple, blissfully happy, with a wonderful future ahead of them. Evie is pregnant with their precious baby. We are then re-introduced to Evelyn and Tobias, twenty years later, their lives unrecognisable. The tragic death of their only child, Joshua, eleven years earlier, has changed them irrevocably. Everyone deals with grief differently, Evelyn and Tobias’ experiences are poles apart, the chasm between them growing incrementally.
This book has such intensity, it is devastating and dark. The full array and depth of human emotions have been examined in the pages. Grief has been portrayed in all of it’s gut-wrenching torment.
The characters are so well developed, flawed, human, perfectly imperfect.
This is certainly not a book to choose if you are looking for a happily ever after. It is a book that will leave you feeling battered and bruised, but conversely, also a little optimistic and hopeful. Redemption is so emotionally charged, after I had turned the last page, I was left with a lump in my throat. It is a book of love and hate, two sides of the same coin.
We start with the release of Aaron Alexander from prison. He has served his time, eleven years for causing the death of Joshua Moore in a hit and run. All he wants to do is get on with his life, stay on the right path and put the past behind him. He has a job in a petrol station, a sympathetic boss, and is slowly getting there. Sadly, there is one person determined that whatever punishment he got, it will never be enough for killing a young boy. Her young boy. Evelyn is out for revenge. She has been waiting a long time for this. Counting down the days...
So she and husband Tobias set off to track Aaron down. to mete out the punishment that the courts failed to deliver. An eye for an eye... life for a life... But this is no simple cat and mouse game as Tobias has a very different aim from Evelyn... And so begins a rather weird and not wholly believable double chase, the ins and outs of which I am leaving for you to discover as the author intends...
Where do I start? This book is action packed and fast paced, but I did lose count of all the times I rolled my eyes with the next incredible thing someone either did or had done to them. For someone hell bent on revenge against the one person who wronged them, to redress the balance, there was an awful lot of collateral damage caused along the way, specifically the killing of innocent people caught in the crossfire. I am usually quite forgiving with these things but I think the sheer quantity and importance of these did overwhelm me, and kinda took over my enjoyment of the story being told. Which was actually quite compelling, hence my not giving up. To be brutally honest, I was quite interested and intrigued to see how the author would even begin to wrap it all up... although, when we got there, I was just as unconvinced as for the rest of the book. There were things that were never resolved, threads left dangling, Leaving me on the whole quite unsatisfied.
But, all that said, I appear to be in the minority, there's a lot of people who loved this book, so...
My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.
Redemption by new to me author Jack Jordan explores the lives of three people and how far someone is willing to go to exact revenge.
Eleven years ago, Evelyn and Tobias Moore received the worst possible news a parent could ever hear. Their nine-year-old son, Joshua, was killed by a hit and run driver. Eleven years later, his killer, Aaron Alexander, has been released from prison and is trying to rebuild his life. The grief that Evelyn and Tobias have carried have completely changed them. No longer are they the parents of a little boy, but they are no longer the loving couple who fell in love more than two decades ago. They are like strangers to one another. Tobias is desperate to find the woman his wife used to be. Evelyn feels nothing but contempt for her husband and rage at Aaron Alexander. She is on a mission and is determined that nothing and nobody will stop her. She plans on hunting Aaron down and killing him. Only then will the pain she has carried be overcome.
My heart broke over and over for all three of these characters. I had loads of empathy for Evelyn and Tobias but as she moves forward on her quest for vengeance, I felt that empathy begin to fade and horror and disgust began to take over. I understood why she felt she needed to do this but I couldn’t understand how she could actually do the things she ends up doing.
I felt bad for Tobias. Not only has he lost his only child to a senseless act, but he is losing his wife to her grief and anger. She is no longer the woman he married, but he still loves her and believes if he can get through to her somehow, to stop her, she will come back to him. I admired his courage to want to do the right thing, knowing his life could be jeopardized if he gets in his wife’s way. The actions he has to take to not only survive but change the course of events unfolding in front of him were quite intense and scary. I honestly would not know what I would do if I were in his shoes.
I wanted to hate Aaron. Perhaps at the beginning of the story, I did a little. What kind of person would strike a child in the road and not stop? A monster, certainly, but I soon learned that Aaron wasn’t a monster. He was a messed-up kid, who came from a messed-up home, got caught up with the wrong people and became a drug addict. These are not excuses for his behavior but are factual insights into the person he was. While in prison, he got clean and wanted to make something of himself. As the story progressed and I got to know Aaron better, I understood who he was and why he was in the car that night.
This story was absolutely riveting! How far would any of us be willing to go to exact revenge? How long could we feed the anger and hate in our hearts, keeping it alive in our soul? I expect we would likely turn out the way Evelyn has. Eleven years is a long time to wait, plan, prepare. It’s no wonder she lost parts of her soul, her humanity, her compassion and her love. This story gave me the anxiety one feels when they are trying to get to the finish line before the timer runs out but I had to keep going. I had to know what was going to happen. Would Evelyn come to her senses on her own and lay down her sword? Would Tobias be able to stop her in time before she did something she could never come back from? Would Aaron be able to survive and outwit her? Could he really build any kind of life if he’s on the run and always looking over his shoulder?
In addition to Evelyn’s thirst for blood, this story offers up other dangers and villains that pose a threat. The backdrop of this story is a massive wildfire near Aaron’s home. Driving towards the fire is never a good idea, but Evelyn doesn’t care. Drug dealers and members of the Proud Boys are also a threat to both Tobias and Aaron for multiple reasons. There are multiple supporting characters that round out the story with substance, helping the story move forward.
My Final Verdict: I suspect this book will remain with me, in my mind and my heart, for a very long time. I highly recommend this story not just for the story itself, but for the characters who are so vulnerable in their humanity and lost in their mistakes. Are these characters capable of only retribution? Is redemption a possibility? Read this book and walk that road with Evelyn, Tobias and Aaron. It’s a journey that you will never forget.
Thank you to the publisher, Simon and Schuster UK, who provided an advance reader copy via NetGalley.
I’ve been a massive fan of Jack Jordan’s books since I read his debut novel ‘Anything for Her ‘ back in 2015. So every time he has a new book published I am so excited to read it. Redemption is in my opinion his best book yet. It deals with so many emotions, including grief, trauma, anger, sadness and regret.
I don’t need to go into the book details as it’s all in the book description above. This book gripped me like a vice from the very beginning. After every chapter I just had to keep on reading I was so absorbed and caught up in the story. I was practically holding my breath at times wondering what was going to happen next. It a definitely a roller coaster of a read and your heart will be in your mouth at times. Jack Jordan has written some excellent characters into this book and I found myself changing my feelings towards the three main characters as I progressed through the book. Another top class read by Mr Jordan.
A good read despite disliking one of the main characters. I felt sympathy for Evelyn and Tobias, however, completely dislike the character of Evelyn, and found Tobias to be cowardly throughout, although his morality was a redeeming feature. The character I felt sorry for the most was Aaron. There was a lot of action and the storyline made for an interesting read, with lots of bits in it that I did not expect. This is the second book I’ve read by this author and I’m sure I’ll read more in the future.
I loved the concept and having the story told from different perspectives made it more engaging.
However, this book just wasn't for me. 90% of the story is the chase/road trip that it did get a bit boring after a while. It's also quite gory which I didn't expect!
Though this is my least favourite of his books, I did enjoy it for the most part.
I’m struggling to put into words how I felt about this book. It’s a very different kind of thriller as it shows true love, heartbreak, agonising grief, and true hatred! It really was a bittersweet story and very emotional. Great writing as always from Jack Jordan.
Thank you to Netgalley & Simon & Schuster for allowing me the opportunity to read this book in advance of its release date in exchange for my honest review.
Oof this packed one heck of a punch, this is an author who is really at the top of their game.
This book has the lot, a book with a sting in its tale, just as the cover suggests
A twisty ride with a hard dilemma it is hear, you wont be able to put this one down.
Terrific!
I really enjoyed Redemption. The thriller is quite fast paced and certainly a page turner. I liked the way the book ended. Throughout reading it I was trying to figure out how it would end and am glad to say that I the book didn't disappoint. 5 stars most enjoyable.
I'd never read this author before but wow, what a writer!! The premise was original and world's away from any other domestic thriller I've read recently. The characters well fleshed out and humanised. I loved that it raises the moral questions if what makes a villain and who the real hero of the story is. It had twists and turns, I had absolutely no clue where the story was going next but loved every second of it. A must read
Absolutely brilliant, this thriller kept me hooked from start to finish; I devoured it in three sittings. The three different POVs meant that you could sympathise with all the characters, Aaron and Tobias in particular. Evelyn reminded me of the Terminator - a machine focused on her goal, lacking in humanity.
Face-paced, gripping and a fabulous read.
Wow! This book was fantastic, I loved it. It took me through a range of emotions and at one point I was shuddering with the really graphic description of something - don’t want to give too much away.
Aaron Alexander had just completed an 11 year sentence for the hit and run and murder of Joshua Moore - a child.
Aaron is trying to get his life back but things are not that straightforward.
Evelyn and Tobias Moore are Joshua’s parents and were blissfully happy until Joshua was knocked down and killed by Aaron. Evelyn is horrified that Aaron only got 11 years and has spent the whole time he was in jail plotting and planning for when he was released.
Evelyn is under no illusions about what she is going to do - she is going to kill Aaron and Tobias is going along with her plans. Evelyn sets her plan into place and they leave to drive to where Aaron lives. Evelyn is a mother who is grieving and has lost all sense of what is right and wrong as all she can focus on is hunting down Aaron.
The book is split into chapters of Evelyn, Tobias and Aaron and gives a real insight into their thoughts, emotions and feelings. It’s a fab read and one that is full of shocks and surprises.
Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for an advance copy of this book in return for an honest review.
Wow, what a pulsating ride Jack Jordan takes us on in this novel about one woman's quest for revenge and her husband desperately trying to stop her.
Twenty years ago Evelyn and Tobias were eagerly awaiting the birth of their first child. For 9 years, Joshua was their world until one fateful night when Aaron killed him in a car accident, fast forward 11 years and Aaron has served his sentence in the eyes of the law and courts. But for Evelyn the time has come for her to exact her retribution. We follow her along the route from San Diego to Reno and beyond as she battles her emotions to accomplished what she set out to do. As wildfires follow her journey,we as the reader, are caught up in a maelstrom of feelings.
It was surprising to find myself more on the side of Aaron, the drug addicted child killer, than his mum, In writing his character Jack Jordan has shown a vulnerable side, one that I wasn't expecting. Evelyn's actions, on more than one occasion, had me in despair and horror. The turmoil and grief she faces etched into her every move.
This novel is a fast paced, all action, superb read and would make a fabulous movie. It's sure to be a well deserved bestseller
Oh my word, Jack Jordan has done it again. What an incredible read Redemption is. Truly mind blowing. Talk about a roller coaster of emotions, I felt them all whilst reading this, and it even made me cry which rarely happens with thrillers. I was so engaged in what was happening the whole way, wanting things to work out for all the characters, but that was never going to happen,
Losing a child is the worst thing that can happen to a parent, and 11 years on, Evelyn and Tobias are still lost in a cloud of grief. Their 9 year old son Joshua was killed by a speeding car and left for sea. Now the driver, Aaron Alexander is being released and the couple want revenge. Evelyn is hell bent on seeing Aaron die, but Tobias is not convinced.
This is a cat and mouse adventure from San Diego and through the Nevada desert. Nothing is going to stop Evelyn or Tobias from achieving their goals. It is a drama filled, fast paced journey, that will see them doing the unthinkable. Incredibly emotional, as their parents deal with their grief and loss, while we see Aaron trying to come to terms with what he did and how his life has turned out. Get those tissues ready.
This is a must read thriller, full of tension. Get this one on your TBR now, you will not be sorry.
Thank you so so much to Simon and Schuster UK for my advanced copy of this amazing book to read. Published on June 20th.
Wow! What a read!
The story is about parents find themselves facing unimaginable tragedy in a heartbreaking situation, which no parents could ever contemplate.
There are three main characters: Evelyn, the mum, who is a challenge to like, badly damaged from her trauma; Tobias, the dad, who initially appears as weak character, also enveloped in grief. The final protagonist is Aaron, the driver of the car during the hit and run accident. Jordan cleverly manipulates the readers view of Aaron, drawing empathy and understanding more powerfully than for Evelyn, which amazed me.
With three POV’s, the reader is able to learn about the thoughts and feelings of each of the characters and how they all got to this point in their lives.
The only way to describe this story is dark and gritty, the setting so well described that I could feel the harsh desert heat, smell the smoke and feel the desperation. Evelyn with her rage and despair, fuelling her need for revenge, Tobias, with equal determination to stop Evelyn and rediscover the wife he emotionally lost when Joshua was killed.
The plot is fast paced and surprising, it is violent and traumatic and never an easy read. I had to read on, never quite knowing how the story would end. The conclusion, when it came, did not disappoint and was both surprising and effectively delivered.
My final thought is how does the author manage to come up with a plot like this, chasing across America, portraying this situation and untethered emotions so brilliantly? Great job Jack- a powerful, emotional story of grief, pain, loss and acceptance.
This was a DNF for me,mainly because of the main character who was just so aggressive and one dimensional,I fully understand her grief and her feelings but the way she was was hard to keep reading about
The writing was good hence still 3 stars
Jack Jordan you are back to your best! This book was incredible.
The drama and tension never slows down, this is a pulsating read and I swear I could feel my heart rate increase when I read certain scenes. I loved the different POVs, as it helped me to sympathise with each of them, and their different interests and ebd goals.
Absolutely loved it, and it is my new favourite Jack Jordan book!
Alex Alexander has been released from
prison after a long sentence for a hit and run against a child, Joshua. Evelyn, Joshua’s mother, has been waiting for this day for years. She is consumed by rage, counting down the days until she can get her revenge. Meanwhile husband, Tobias, will do all he can to stop her, saving her from herself.
I have read a few of Jack Jordan’s previous thrillers and this was by far my favourite. Straight away the reader is thrown into a thrilling, wild cat and mouse game, which literally leaves you on tenterhooks. The author is brilliant at creating moral dilemmas, which lead for great discussion and this follows in a similar fashion.
The characters were superbly written, as were their emotional responses and actions. The author manages to evoke empathy towards all the charters, regardless of what they have done. The story is told in multiple points of view, which really helps to tell the story and makes it flow nicely. This is a fast paced, suspenseful thriller which could easily become a high octane, action blockbuster. I can see this becoming a massive hit and I will definitely be recommending. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this copy in return for an honest review.
This is Jack Jordan's best novel yet. I was completely hooked from the first page. Another moral dilemma which the author is getting quite good at.
If your son was killed by a hit and run driver would you want revenge? Even if he is caught and has spent 11 years in prison. Evelyn Moore has held on to her grief for those 11 years, she wants Revenge, she has planned to kill the person who took her 9 year old son away from her. But her husband Tobias wants to stop her. He wants the woman he fell in love with back. It has been a long 11 years. Evelyn has done her research she knows where Aaron works, she knows where he will go.
But the plans don't really work as she had hoped, and a chase ensues, Evelyn chasing Aaron and when Tobias is abandoned by Evelyn with nothing but the T shirt and boxers she has left him with. He has to resort to desperate measures following in Evelyn's wake. Can he protect Aaron before Evelyn can kill him. To top it off there are wild fires spreading across California the smokey atmosphere always there lingering.
Will revenge really make her feel better? I went from feeling sorry for her and putting myself in her place, to then being angry, and by the end i was in tears. Such a number of emotions as you read this.
Gripping and engrossing from start to finish, i had visitors twice and i couldn't wait for them to leave so that i could continue reading. Absolutely loved this one.
