Firstly I just loved the narrator, it was a joy to listen to and will look out for the narrator in other books! This is definitely an easy listen and made me laugh in parts and hard some hard hitting topics thrown in. It gave me Emily Henry vibes at times. I gave this 4.5 stars and looking forward to what the author writes next. Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for a chance to read and review this book.
Plot Twist by Breea Keenan. Thank you to NetGalley for the advance audio of this book. I really enjoyed the narrator’s accent.
Becca is a Scottish teacher and aspiring writer. Her life is not going well as she just received news that her best friend, Rae, died in a car accident on her way to stay with Becca for the weekend.
Becca has been corresponding with Riley, a romance writer who lives in Ireland. They first became online friends when Riley needed Beta readers for a new book which would be published soon. Becca messages Riley about her friend’s death and her sadness about it. After lots of back-and-forth messaging, Riley suggests that Becca should come stay and they can do an impromptu and informal writers brainstorming session with the new book which is due for completion. After thinking about it she decides that it would be a great idea to get away from her life for a couple of weeks to get over the shock of Rae’s death and Riley has a 4 year old daughter which she has been wanting to meet.
She takes a ferry over to Ireland and upon arriving at the cottage she is shocked to find out Riley is not female as Becca has always thought, but a really good looking guy – and single - but with a mysterious ex in the background. Yes, the book is fairly predictable but it was a lovely easy read.
Fans of Emily Henry’s books will love this romcom.
Plot Twist is a well-paced story told between present day and flashbacks. Becca and Riley are friends who haven’t met but there’s little to show of their friendship, they could have literally emailed once prior to meeting + had the same chemistry. I think having chapters from Riley’s POV might have helped with this, as it was predominantly the Becca show with sprinkles of Riley. Plot Twist fell flat for me, it felt like too much was being crammed into a book plus you already know the major Plot Twist going in (which could have been played into more before the reveal). They unfortunately lacked the chemistry for a true friends-to-lovers, as both friends and lovers.
Audiobook narration 🎧 Joy McAvoy is an absolute ✨joy✨ to listen to, I'm so fond of the Glaswegian accent so I may be biased but I'm adding her to my auto-listen list of audiobook narrators!
Thank you Headline Audio, Headline Accent + NetGalley for the chance to listen to Plot Twist before it is released 📖 #PlotTwist #NetGalley
Arc review- devoured this book, it as a nice romance book with a good plot and some great twists to keep you engaged.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with a copy of Plot Twist by Breea Keenan. This book was unfortunately not for me.
I did not like the FMC at all; she came across as so self centred and seemed to try and make everything about her! Losing her best friend is definitely completely heartbreaking but she is not the only one who lost someone/who is struggling, and any time someone told her they were having a hard time she’d turn it round and make it about how sad she was! The fact she didn’t communicate what Riley’s daughter had said to her when it was clearly a concern made me so mad!
I also didn’t like how critical she was with other women, mostly out of jealousy.
Great book by Scottish author Breea Keenan with a bonus Scottish narrator who does a fantastic job!
I thoroughly enjoyed this light romance read. Easy to listen to and I didn't want to turn it off. A slow burn romance with lots of character development. Cant wait to read Breea's next book!
Plot Twist is a standalone romantic comedy but with some serious topics in it. Becca is an aspiring author who meets Riley in an online writers' forum. Becca and Riley form a friendship, with Becca under the illusion that Riley is a woman. When Becca's best friend Rae suddenly dies, Riley invites Becca to Ireland for the summer to deal with both her grief and their mutual writers' block. Becca arrives in Ireland to find that Riley is in fact a stunning Irish man.
The book alternates between the current time period and 9-10 years before. I thought they were well spaced out, occurring at exactly the right time to ramp up tension while providing extra context, and the whole story was well paced. The chapters set in the past added up gradually and were quite emotional in the end.
The story includes a clean romance but includes serious topics such as a best friend's death, domestic abuse, cancer, and the impacts of addiction. I enjoyed the book a lot, but I will say that the book isn't what I thought it was going to be based on the blurb and cover combination. I was expecting a light, easy-reading rom-com, possibly with some spice. And while there are definitely lots of funny moments and the first half of the book is mainly a traditional rom-com, I wouldn't say that the heavier themes were signposted in the blurb very well. The blurb definitely focuses on the comedy aspect so while I ended up completely loving the book, I wanted to point out the heavier topics. It might be that I just haven't read enough modern rom-coms to expect it, since the ones I've read before haven't got into topics like that before. The blurb mentions that this book is perfect for fans of Emily Henry. I've never read any of her books, so I definitely can't speak to those similarities - maybe if I had, the more serious topics wouldn't have been such a surprise?
I listened to the audiobook version, and I thought it was a fantastic format for the book. The narrator perfectly managed both the dramatic and sad moments, and the rom-com moments. Hearing it in a Scottish accent really enhanced it as well for me. Maybe the audiobook version ramps up the dramatic elements more than reading the physical or e-book would have done, which is why I'm interpreting the book's topics as heavier than other reviews I can see for this book, which refer to receiving an ARC rather than ALC. I generally listen to audiobooks while doing other things, and normally the audiobook is consumed in addition to a main physical or e-book. The sign of a 5 star audiobook for me is when it becomes my main book, when I just sit or lay down and listen to it while doing nothing else, and I did that with this book.
As an emotional fiction book with rom-com elements, it was pretty perfect, but the blurb and cover probably don't fit what I personally experienced in the book. It might just be that I'm a relative newbie to a modern romcom, so it doesn't harm the rating at all for me. As a debut novel and as an audiobook, this was amazing and I will definitely read more from Breea Keenan.
Disclaimer: I received an ALC from NetGalley, but this is my voluntary and honest review.
I'm absolutely pumped to share my thoughts on this incredible audio journey. Right from the start, it whisked me off to the stunning landscapes of Scotland and Ireland, fueling my sense of adventure and wanderlust.
The main characters totally won me over with their authenticity and charm. Their friendship was portrayed so genuinely that I felt like I was right there with them, experiencing every moment. It wasn't just about the storyline; it was about the deep connection they shared, which was the heart and soul of the narrative.
Throughout the audio experience, I was taken on a wild rollercoaster of emotions, from moments of pure excitement to heartfelt introspection. Each chapter unfolded with such care and precision, keeping me hooked and eager for more.
What really hit home for me was how they showcased friendship as the foundation of all relationships. It was beautifully depicted, serving as a reminder of the importance of having a solid support system in both personal and professional spheres.
This audio journey was an absolute gem, blending adventure, friendship, and heartfelt moments seamlessly. It left a lasting impression on me, inspiring me to cherish the beauty of human connection and the magic of true friendship. I can't recommend it enough to anyone craving an unforgettable escape into a world of wonder and companionship.
I really enjoyed listening to this and I'm not one for audio books.
Within the first few chapters I was laughing and found is amusing. This was an easy listening book which had my grips rather quickly.
A great rom com. I really enjoyed the flashback parts and always enjoy books with different time frames.
I would highly recommend this book to all readers.
Thank you to NetGalley and Headline Audio
for the opportunity to listen to this audiobook.
Firstly thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to listen to this audiobook in exchange for an honest and fair review!
This book was fantastic I was hooked from beginning to the end I cannot tell you how much I loved this book! Riley was a phenomenal love interest and really stole my heart, Emma was a character I connected too so deeply, when a book deals with harder topics I normally find it quite cringey or like just bleh? But oh my gosh the way that Breea handled the topics?! Chefs kiss! It was fantastic and I truly devoured this book, it’s taken me a few days to think of what I want to say about this book and honestly here it goes.
The characters were perfection and the settings oh my gosh amazing I felt like I was there! And little Ivy! Oh my gosh she’s the sweetest little thing ever and I’m so so glad I got to read this book I truly loved it so much and I can’t wait to get my hands on a physical copy.
If you want a read that will give you butterflies and make your stomach flip at times well this is the one for you, the romance was perfect and also I truly think this book is the perfect comfort read and I cannot wait to reread this I loved it!
When school teacher and aspiring author Becca loses her best friend in tragic circumstances she impulsively accepts the invitation from her online writer friend Riley to go and stay with her in Ireland on a so called writers retreat. Riley, however turned out not to be a 'she' but a 'he'!
The book is well written and in spite of tackling themes of grief and loss is generally light-hearted and amusing.
The Scottish and Irish accents are beautifully narrated and add to the romance of this promising debut novel.
I am grateful to NetGalley and the publishers for an advanced listener copy of this book and am leaving my honest review voluntarily.
I received this originally as an ebook but the file type didn’t allow for font adjustment so I never finished it, but I loved what I did read.
I was able to finish this via audio and really really enjoyed it. The narrator is excellent, emotive and good pacing.
The book itself was both a little tropey and a lot unexpected, and I really liked the flashback parts, though I wish there was a bit more difference in narrator there in the audio version. My original 4 stars stands.
This is what happens when you take a Scot girl and place her into a pretty cottage in the northern Irish country. What a beautiful story, with the ups and downs of the life of a woman who doesn’t have all the answers. So realistic in the roller coaster of emotions from out loud laughter, to tears.
I enjoyed the story so much, it was just what I needed.
When Irish writer Riley invites fellow Scottish writer Becca to their country getaway, Becca jumps at the chance to work on her book whilst spending time with her female friend. What Becca doesn't realize is that Riley is a guy and a hot one at that. And that's just the first plot twist...
I listened to this audiobook as I read along with my ebook. If you have the chance to listen to this one on audio, I highly recommend it. There's something about the Scottish and Irish accents that just puts you in the right mood for romance. This book had a cute storyline with likable characters that kept me fully entertained throughout. Congratulations on your debut Breea Keenan - I can't wait to see what you write next.
This was absolutely stunning, my lip was trembling in the first couple of chapters, then I was fully sobbing, then I was cackling away like and old witch then I was crying again and so on and so on. Such an unassuming cover and what do they always say? Yep never judge etc. This little book was EVERYTHING.
This was a rom com certainly, but my god it packed a lot of punches. I can see a scramble for movie rights coming!
Joy McAvoy has done a stellar job on the narration.
Thank you to NetGalley and Headline Audio for the opportunity to listen to this audiobook in return for an honest review.
