This is different to the usual holocaust accounts I’ve read, as it was told through the victims’ granddaughter, who comes across her grandparents’ STOLPERSTEIN (stumbling stones) on the internet. It took me a while to get into it, but it was really interesting (and heartbreaking).
A very sad and emotional story. A fantastic account brought back to life by their only grandchild. A very harrowing read at times.
The story of the author’s quest to find out what happened to her grandparents during the Holocaust.
Painstaking research went into this book, it was emotional and harrowing.
Thank you to NetGalley and Cannongate for my e-copy in exchange for an honest review.
What an amazing book and in places incredibly sad to read, so well researched and a read that will stay with the reader for a long time. My thanks as always to NetGalley and publisher Canongate for this read.
Kohnstamm weaves a truly heartbreaking and human story of her legacy and family in this book. Through painstakingly written interviews, research and analysis we, the reader, can see how something that happened so long ago can still have an impact on a family, generations later. Its very clear that a lot of passion and work went into this book, and it reads easily and is a stark reminder of humanity at its best and worst.
