In Pursuit Of Love tells the sad story of Victor Hugo's daughter Adèle, told by Mark Bostridge.

The author travels around the world tracking down the places in which the Hugo family lived, finding as much information that is at all possible.
He visits museums in pursuit of this information, the buildings where the family would have lived, and with disbelief that these have been demolished and believes that they should have been preserved for Hugo Victor is the most famous writer in the world.

Mark Bostridge exchanges and explores aspects of his life that mirror those of Adèle, adding a richness to this much untold tale.

This was an interesting and fascinating book showing research into Victor Hugo, his family, his liaisons as well as the story of Adele.
I would have preferred less of the authors own story as it tended to distract from the historical story. I did however apreciate the author giving the information on how his research was taken and the information correct, incorrect or dubious being handled so well.
I felt very sorry for Adele throughout but life for richer women was very controlled back then and I feel that had she lived nowadays she would have fared much better and certainly not ended up in a mental institute.

An interesting look at a mostly sidelined figure in history. Adele Hugo is an intriguing figure who suffered unrequited love and ended up in an institution. How different her life may have been in a different time. I liked the interjections from the author on his own experiences and it has made me want to go to Paris.

I have paused in my reading of this book in the hope that I will be inspired to pick it up again and give it another chance. The problem for me has been the intrusive voice of the author. I know it's completely intentional but I find it interferes with my pleasure in reading what I hoped would be a luxurious and gripping read.
I will return to it though I am sure.

Not a usual genre for me to read, however it is an interesting read to follow Adele Hugos life through the years. Little inputs from the authors own life add to the story but maybe make it a little long.

A meticulously-researched exploration of the great writer’s daughter and her tragedy. This book is part biography, part detective story, and part historical analysis. Bostridge skillfully weaves together letters and accounts from various sources to reconstruct the life of Adèle Hugo, who is often just a footnote to her famous father’s life - when I visited Victor Hugo’s house in Paris, I remember being intrigued by her. This book met that need in examining the complexities and contradictions surrounding Adèle‘s mental health.
