A sweet, fluffy acquaintance to lovers romance about unrequited love finally being realized.
Aubrey's fiancée dumps her on their wedding day, and his best friend Monica is apparently to blame. Ten years later, Aubrey is attending five of her friends' weddings, and Monica (still in the same friend group) is also going. Can Aubrey finally put the past behind her, especially as she gets closer to Monica?
There's a lot to like about this book. The pacing is good, and I love how it's set up in the style of five weddings bringing the two women closer together over the course of several months. I love that Aubrey is a mom, but I wish her daughter had a little bit more of a central role. The romance itself was sweet but also not quite as deep as I'd hoped to see, especially given that they've known each other for so long. I also really liked seeing reference to previous novels. Definitely would recommend to those who enjoy lighthearted Sapphic romances.
Received an ARC from NetGalley and I devoured this entire book on a Sunday afternoon. I will give it a solid 4 stars! I really love the enemies to lovers troupe! I liked the longer chapters in this book. I really loved watching the two main characters fall for each other. The drama was minimal and the communication was a breath of fresh air. I really enjoyed this book and now I’m excited to read more of Georgia Beers’ work!
Just wow--a charming and heartfelt story that I could read over and over again! The love that evolved between Monica and Aubrey was so beautiful and romantic! I love the way these characters overcame relatable hardships. It was precious to watch their relationship grow over the course of the different parts of the year. I really love the way the story was organized through each wedding. And I am definitely excited to re-read again just because it was THAT good. Keep up the great work, Ms. Beers! Thank you for the opportunity to read such beautiful work.
10 out of 10! This story is SO beautiful, and I am so happy to have read another home run from THE Georgia Beers. I absolutely adored these characters. Ms. Beers has an excellent way of describing her characters in a way that always allows you to empathize with what they're experiencing. Her storytelling makes me feel not so alone in my own experiences. Even though we weren't meant to love Monica from the start, we still find it easy to root for her and Aubrey. I could not put this book down, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to read it. Please keep writing amazing stories, Ms. Beers! You are magical and so is this new story. LOVE YOU!
Thank you to Netgalley and Bold Stroke Books for the ARC.
I don't want you to think I didn't genuinely enjoy this book. I did. It was nice to briefly visit old stomping grounds like Martinis and Second Scoop. Aubrey was a wonderful, strong, lovely character to get to know. The romance was sweet. There was technically no third act breakup.
Like most of Beers's books, I really enjoyed this book. It wasn't my favorite, and I had a few issues with it, but overall it's a very good book. Aubrey is a wonderful MC, and I loved seeing the world through her eyes. Most of the other characters were a little flat though. And Cody was basically just a giant man child acting out when he doesn't get his way. I would have loved to have a scene where Aubrey sighs a breath of relief for dodging that bullet. (Also, you can't just show up randomly without communicating with the other parent...looking at you Halloween just showing up out of the blue.)
I love books with kids in them, but I felt like a lot of opportunity was missed by not incorporating Aubrey's daughter more fully into the narrative. I mean, out of five weddings, only one does she bring her daughter and that one only because of Emma being in the wedding. By their age, many of their friends are going to need to be bringing their own kids to their friends' weddings...so not bringing Emma seems weird as a single parent myself.
The romance, when it was moving forward, was very sweet and fluffy. Aubrey and Monica seemed to really fit together. However, half the time the two were "together" Monica was avoiding and not talking to Aubrey. We never really get to know Monica better than "OMG she's so pretty." The epilogue being set two years after the end of the book is the only reason it would be believable all things considered. I would have loved to be there for more of the romance part of the relationship.
My biggest complaint though is the formatting of the book. It is written in five parts...but zero chapters. The last two parts are more than half of the book by themselves. I, and many people like me, use chapters as nice stopping points to take a break, get some sleep, etc. Having the book formatted the way it was made it really difficult to do that. And there were plenty of obvious places to put chapters in the various parts. I did enjoy the little wedding invitations at the beginning of each part, and I did enjoy the score keeping at the end of each part.
This one surprised me for good and I´m almost sure if I´d be more of a reader of contemporary fiction, with all the pop culture references included in this pack (which I am not), I would have given this the full 5 stars.
That being said, I think what I loved the most about this story is how well crafted the characters are, and also how the main conflict of the novel was handled. I had a fear I would end up hating some of the characters (Cody particularly) and although it´s true I don´t fully like him yet, despite having finished the novel, I still think he´s got the potential. And more or less happened with the weddings because, let me tell you, Aubrey goes to a number of weddings. Like, too many of them (thankfully the narration doesn´t focus that much on it, so it´s bearable).
I think I can understand though why some people would consider the romance in this book going too fast: Aubrey and Monica at first only meet at these weddings they´re both attending, and that´s where the love story begins to be built. So, even if there´s at least 3 months apart from each event, the book only shows us those weddings and barely anything in between. In other words, for us a chapter has passed. For the characters, it´s been months. So no, I don´t think the pacing of this romance was fast. For me, at least, had the perfect pace.
My only complain, perhaps, would be that I felt the romance too superficial at times. As if there was physical attraction and not much more apart from that (which might be because I didn´t feel we had enough time for the protagonists to actually get to know each other; they spent their time either avoiding each other, having some awkward interactions of making out). But then again, the plot still works nicely and this was one of the best sapphic stories I´ve read in a while, so I can pretend I didn´t see anything.
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this very entertaining book
poor aubrey mcfadden jilted the day of her wedding, well you can certainly understand why she was never ever getting married or planning on getting married in her whole life time ever again...
so why did her friends decide 10 years later that they all were getting married and that aubrey had to go to their wedding either as a guest or as a bridesmaid.... her only option was to go along with it but she most certainly was going to avoid Monica Wallace. the one who made sure her fiance walked away from her all those years ago
surely it could be easy to avoid monica after all there were bound to be loads of guests at these five weddings...
oh my... started and finished this book in one night and boy what a ride of emotions for poor aubrey you have to feel for the poor girl left at the altar and life in general was never going to be easy after that and you can understand her stance on weddings and her hatred of monica....
what a ride of a book though and looking forward to reading more of this authors books...
This book starts off with a bang! Aubrey is left on her wedding day when her fiancé claims he has realized her can’t marry her after talking with his best friend, Monica. She blames Monica for ruining her relationship. Ten years later five of their mutual friends are getting married and they are all invited, Aubrey is in the wedding party of some. She will be faced with seeing Monica again and is still holding a grudge. With each wedding, her grudge eases and the story unfolds. The author takes on a journey of their lives as they have avoided each other and are now faced with interacting and the attraction they feel for each other.
The book is entertaining and flows well with witty banter and engaging side characters. Enjoyable spicy scenes that move the story along and it has just the right amount of angst.
5 weddings in a year, seeing your nemesis at each one is a daunting prospect but life is funny and things may not always be what they appear to be!
Another great romance from Georgia Beers and which I read cover to cover in a day!
Aubrey and Monica take us on an interesting and engaging ride through weddings, feelings and a journey of discovery. Lovely little Easter eggs appear throughout the book which are fun to read.
I clicked request on this ARC without reading the blurb because I’m a Georgia Beers fan. I got super excited about the book after I read the blurb. And I loved every minute of reading it. It’s falls in the column of great classic sapphic romances.
Free ARC via NetGalley.
This was a great story and really shows maybe ask more questions especially when hurt. It can really save you years of hurt but also things happen for a reason and in a season.
It was such an enjoyable read. I liked it a lot. It was not intense or overly different, but it was precisely what I wanted. What I liked the most was that the author did not focus on Emma, and she did not have that many scenes with them. So the build-up was really between them first.
very much recommended.
The cover colors were very eye-catching
This book was such a fun read. I loved it. A classic Georgia Beers novel! Aubrey and Monicas enemies to lovers with a cool plot of the 5 weddings throughout the year. This was a well paced book and if you are a fan of Georgia Beers you will love this book.
Thank you NetGalley and Bold Strokes Books for the ARC.
Wow! I was absolutely captivated by the gripping opening scene of this book. The author plunges you right into the heart of the story, setting the stage for the intense emotions that follow. The prologue's final dialogue left me gasping with its unexpected twist.
As the narrative unfolds, we join Aubrey on her journey through five weddings in a single year—a cosmic joke if there ever was one. Ten years have elapsed since then, and Aubrey and Monica have become experts at avoiding each other. I anticipated their interactions to be lively, given Aubrey's witty and scattered thoughts, all masterfully conveyed through her point of view.
Aubrey emerges as a resilient and humorous FMC, navigating a slow-burning romance fraught with angst and passion. The ensemble cast of friends and supporting characters enriches the story, serving as a devoted fan club for the two women. Special mention goes to Emma, whose youthful wisdom binds the group together.
Overall, I found this story to be multi-dimensional, with a well-paced narrative that effortlessly guides readers through a decade-long love story between Aubrey and Monica.
Another well written romance by Georgia Beers. Aubrey‘s boyfriend (Cody) chose to not get married the day of their wedding. She blamed Monica (Cody’s befriend) until they began running into each other at weddings. This was a sweet, slow burn romance. Plot and characters were well developed.
Thank you NetGalley and Bold Strokes Books for the ARC.
First of all, that is a NICE cover.
Aubrey McFadden is NEVER getting married, after having her college boyfriend stand her up at the altar.
Worse, her friend Monica Wallace was the one that convinced him marriage was a bad idea.
Now all her college friends are getting married, she's been invited to FIVE weddings, and she's almost certain to run into Monica....
Holy crap, Aubrey was pregnant. Wow, OK, Monica that's huge dickery on your part.
I do kind of go 'WAT' at the friends encouraging Aubrey to drop the grudge. I mean, seriously?
I DO kind of feel the book rushes the attraction between the heroine's. It's well written as anything by Georgia Beers is, but it FEELS rushed.
Also, you would think they would talk about torpedoing the wedding at some point. 2/3 through, nope.
Anyway, good read. The characters are well realized, I liked the situation, and there's a good mix of serious and humor. My only gripe is Aubrey seems to fall for Monica a BIT fast.
this was such a fun read. im usually not the biggest adult romance reader, this was infact my first time. this was really good though, i instantly loved aubrey, she was such a great and likeable charactor. all the charactors felt very vivid, and the storytelling was entertaining!
