After an embarrassing meet cute, a scientist and future CEO test the waters when sparks fly in this cute romcom from Camilla Isley.
Reese is a scientist who is head of the robotics Mercer Industries. She is very content in her position and likes her role. She has no aspirations of moving to a management position as that will not let her create.
Thomas is the son of the CEO and enjoys his position of charming people and being in the spotlight of the company but his dad wants him to take on a more involved role so when the CFO of the robotics division announces his retirement, he taps his son for the role. Thomas and his dad know he is not qualified but his dad tells him to spend time getting to know the ropes. He gets assigned to Reese's division to learn as much as he can before his promotion but Reese sees this as a babysitting job and doesn't appreciate him being in her space…at first.
Thomas is instantly attracted to Reese and pursues her pretty aggressively with lots of flirting and fun banter. Reese banters back but she is hesitant because as a woman she doesn't want to come off as trying to get ahead in her workplace by getting close with the future boss. Also, she fears she might get terminated because the company has a no fraternization policy.
Thomas understands her views and vows to let her make the first move but that doesn’t stop the connection they have. As they work, and flirt, with each other everyday, the attraction grows more and more. Thomas is determined to win her over before his promotion but what will it cost him to make Reese his?
I enjoyed the connection between the two main characters but it felt rushed at times. I loved how Reese was a strong and smart main character and Thomas was self aware enough to see her view point and also value her as an employee. Overall, I enjoyed this book. It was cute, easy and fun and it makes me want to go back and read her other 2 books in the series.
This book was an absolute delight! Reese is a fantastic protagonist - smart, driven, and relatable. I loved seeing her navigate her career success at such a young age. The dynamic between Reese and Thomas, with his witty banter and her reactions, was pure entertainment. And K-2P? Hilarious! A perfect blend of humor and heart, this book is a must-read for anyone craving a feel-good story.
"The Love Algorithm" is an adorable, fairly low angst STEM-oriented rom-com. While my employment lawyer self was a bit appalled at the in-office interactions, especially given the power dynamics involved, my romance loving self was loving the flirtations between Reese and Thomas. This book is slow burn (until it's not) and flat out funny in spots. K-2P steals the show in every scene in which he appears.
This book is a quick, fun, easy read. While there is some separation in the third act, it steers clear of an actual third-act breakup. The ending is a little too pat and uncomplicated but is still sweet.
4 stars. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a complimentary ARC. These opinions are my own.
Thanks to NetGalley for the advanced reader copy.
I will not hold it against Camilla Isley that her brain is working on a whole other level, when it comes to the science jargon that the characters used throughout the novel. I still loved this book. Thomas and Reece were fun to go on this ride with and though there were some moments that got a little too "romance'y" for me, other elements (especially K-2P!!) balanced it out. I'll definitely check out another book by this author.
Camilla Isley's "The Love Algorithm" is a unique and captivating romantic comedy. The story revolves around Reese, a brilliant woman dedicated to her career. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she's assigned to look after Thomas, the CEO's charming yet inexperienced son and the creator of a love algorithm that could change everything. Reese's character is intelligent, determined, and witty, making her a relatable and inspiring protagonist. Watching her navigate the complexities of her feelings for Thomas, who is incredibly attractive and potentially her future boss, is hilarious and heartwarming. Thomas is not just a love interest but a character with depth. He's a perfect blend of charisma and flaws, which makes him intriguing and relatable. The transformation of their relationship from adversaries to something more is a journey that had me eagerly turning pages to see how they would grow and change.
Camilla Isley's writing style is not just engaging but a rollercoaster of wit and charm. Her knack for creating vibrant characters and witty banter brings the story to life. The workplace setting adds extra tension and excitement to the romance, making every interaction between Reese and Thomas crackle with chemistry.
Overall, "The Love Algorithm" is a delightful romantic comedy that combines humor, heart, and a touch of workplace drama to leave readers smiling and rooting for love to prevail. I highly recommend this book to fans of enemies-to-lovers romances and anyone looking for a feel-good read that will brighten their day.
I love everything by Camilla Islet!
Now, admittedly, I read this so much later than I intended. I received the ARC ages ago and it became one of those books that I was so excited about that I put it off to avoid disappointment.
Let me tell you - this book did not disappoint!
Thomas was amazing as the main character, I loved the glimpses we got of him in the first two books and was so so looking forward to his story. Reese was wonderful - I love a smart FMC who is an absolute genius in her field and she was the perfect match for Thomas.
I also really enjoyed the epilogue and always love revisiting old characters from previous books.
I can't wait to read Ms Isley's next offering!
Tropes:
• Work place romance
• Smart FMC
• Billionaire MMC
• He falls first
• Forced proximity
• Only one bed
I will never see a Camilla Isley book that I don't want to read. The Love Algorithm wasn't any different.
I have been devouring Isley's romances since I discovered NetGalley, and I couldn't be more thankful to get an arc in exchange for an honest review.
The Love Algorithm takes place in the same universe as Gabriel and Blake's and Marissa and John's stories. This time, the one under the microscope is Thomas, Gabriel's brother.
Camilla Isley's writing is so compelling, yet easy to read, and you find yourself reading more than you initially planned on. However, there are certain things that I wish would improve from one book to another.
First, is the sexy scenes. Most of her novels are PG-13-ish, and I really think the books could benefit from more spice. There is always so much tension, chemistry, and anticipation, yet the main plot revolves around the main couple refusing to kiss/ sleep/ date each other because of x, y, or z. None of the reasons actually make sense.
Second, I absolutely hate how there is so much pining and slow burn, only for the couple to go from 0 to 100 in a matter of days. I would love it if the aftermath of getting together would show them slowly dating rather than just realizing out of nothing that they are soulmates with no base whatsoever.
Thomas and Reese, the couple from The Love Algorithm, had a very nice dynamic in the beginning, and it showed that they constantly pushed each other to be better. I felt like the "can't date my boss" plot felt a bit too dramatic. I am also very much over the "I want him so much but I'll act untouchable and unimpressed" trope.
Do I recommend this? Yes. Would I still devour another Camilla Isley book? HELL YES.
I enjoy author Camilla Isley's novels quite a bit - they're easy & quick to read, and I really appreciate that they're not explicit and more "closed door" than many other of today's offerings. And since she herself had a STEM background, so do many of her female MC's. This latest title, "The Love Algorithm" is the third of the "True Love" series, of which I did read & enjoy the first, "Not in a Billion Years". This one has the wealthy brother of that one as the male MC, but this can certainly be a stand-alone, although there are call-backs to the two previous for sure. I really liked this heroine, engineer Reece, a lot and this story was very enjoyable if a bit predictable (but there's comfort in that). Recommend to those who enjoy these & similiar types of reads. My thanks to the publisher & Net Galley for the DRC widget - my pleasure to review it.
If I could have a K-2P of my own, I would die happy.
This book is perfect for the nerds, such as myself. Reese literally made the ultimate companion, I want to be her. Getting the hot billionaire is a fun bonus, but mostly for the droid.
The tropes I liked most in this book were: grumpyXsunshine, only one bed, and the "I want you but I can't have you"
These were for me the most fun micro-tropes: they write each other secret notes, he goes to Rome for her, and, of course, he falls first.
I liked that Reese had a strong moral compass and that they didn't do anything while he was still going to be her boss. She maintained strong bounderies, that he respected. He didn't force himself upon her, even dismissed her when she had a lapse of judgement in Rome. His self-control was AMAZING. I loved him even more for that.
I received an eARC in exchange for my honest opinion. (Thank you Boldwood Books and Camilla Isley for this opportunity)
⭐⭐⭐⭐ / Fade to black
Basic Information:
- Contemporary romcom.
- Double POV. 1st person. Single timeline.
- Part of a series of standalone books.
Tropes/Hooks:
- Women in science/technology
- Work romance
- Forced proximity (Only one bed included)
- Billionaire MMC
- Dislike to love
- Star Wars references
- Adorable IA robot
My opinion:
- The book reads easy and fast, it's just below 300 pages.
- I really enjoyed the setting in a STEM world, and as a software engineer myself it didn't make me cringe.
- I really enjoyed Reese (FMC) as a character. She is strong, intelligent and cute. Her interactions with Thomas (MMC) are just delicious. I liked Thomas a lot too, but some may perceive him as a little insistent (maybe even unprofessional) because he constantly flirted with Reese in the office while she asked him not to (even though we know from FMC's POV that she is not exactly hating it). Otherwise, he is a really nice person and not an arrogant ass as many billionaires are. I also believe in the rest of their interactions they were pretty respectful towards each other.
- It's true their relationship is mostly insta-lust/insta-attraction, but they don't act on it, so it creates a lot of tension, banter and fun interactions.
- I absolutely fell in love with the K-2P (a robot with AI made by Reese). He is so much fun and you got to love how he just tells facts and tries to understand human emotions. For those of you who love Star Wars and R2-D2 you will get a lot of references to that.
- The humor in this book mostly worked for me.
- Some of the things that didn't work for me: Thomas was objectified by Reese's female colleagues, third act break up (all the tape stuff), and Garret in general.
Generally speaking, I recommend this book to those who are looking for a quick, easy, and fun romance read set in the STEM world and can handle a little Insta attraction. Bonus points if you like Star Wars.
This is a solid romcom and STEM romance. I was excited to read Thomas’s story because I liked his character from book one. I feel like this book has the most tension or the most burn in a slowburn for the 3 books in the series so far. Over all a cute, sweet romance that was a quick, easy read. Bonus shout out to the droid bff. He was hilarious!
This was my favorite book of the series! If you would've told me that I would've loved a book that has a robot as a supporting character, I would've laughed at you, but I absolutely loved this book. Add it to your list if you like an easy-breasy rom com.
We need more romance set in robotics labs!
Dr. Reese Campbell loves her job as the head of Research and Development at Mercer Robotics but finding out that she has been tasked to babysit Thomas Mercer, the son of the head of Mercer Industries while he learns how to be the next head of Mercer Robotics.
Thomas Mercer knows he’s going to be like a fish out of water around all of the engineers in the robotics lab but meeting Dr. Reese Campbell was going to open his eyes about his future!
I loved how Camilla Isley makes a romance set in a robotics lab funny especially if you get some of the science and math jokes! Plus we need more of K-2P!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from the author and NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
A fun, easy rom-com read. I love that our female protagonist has a droid side kick in a manner in which it just comes off funny and adorable rather than cheesy and out of place. This is a forced proximity, work place relationship with hints of slow burn and will they won’t they. Also my beloved one bed trope. The characters are confident, secure, mature, and oh so sweet together. Their post it note communications with each other had me giggling and kicking my feet. I have read the books for our side characters and I loved getting to see them again from different perspectives. The conflict in the story is reasonable and organic. There isn’t much I didn’t like here. I would highly recommend for a quick easy read.
This book was fun and I loved K2P. I think the little robot might have been my favorite character! I was excited to finally get Thomas' story after meeting him in previous books. While this was not my favorite in the series, it was still a solid 4 star read. Camilla's books are a must read for me and this book gets added to the list of hits.
Camilla Isley has a tendency to draw you in and keep you anchored to the chaos and love until the very end! This book definitely sounds familiar but it doesn't come off that way. Great banter and chemistry! I love that this is it's own unique book but second in the series so we could see the characters from the first! You'll definitely enjoy that! I will say they were right about this being a witty enemies to lovers and workplace rom-com! This will make you laugh out loud, feel good, and blush in one sitting! I never wanted it to end! please give this author a chance! Thank you NetGalley, Camilla Isley, and the publisher for granting me access to this book in exchange for an honest review.
There was a lot to live here. Quirky reversed stereotype romance where she is a super smart scientist and head of her department and he's just pretty and the bosses son. The romance was one sided insta love where he falls first.
There were moments where the book timeline felt off - like sudden time jumps that didn't flow and felt clunky.
I got the impression this was written to join in the hype created by Ali Hazelwood's book for women in stem as the lead and it will absolutely work for Hazelwood despite being more heavy handed in it's references.
The Love Algorithm is a "enemies-to-lovers, work place rom com." It is such a fun read! It's book #3 in the True Love series from Camilla Isley. You don't need to read them in order.
Thank you to NetGalley for the digital review copy.
Like all of Camilla Isley's books, I enjoyed The Love Alhorithm. This closed door romance has the perfect amount of sparks and romance. There is a high amount of robotic/engineering language. At times this is a bit hard to understand, but skipping over the descriptions of robots and engineering does not impede the story. I loved K-2P and kinda wish I had one of my own.
2.5
I’m honestly a bit baffled by this book.
There was so much about the concept I loved, the droid KP2 honestly was the absolute standout for me and I was sad there wasn’t more of him!
I liked the character of Reese a lot. I loved the premise of her being a brilliant, young female manager of a major robotics department and who had crafted her own team.
My main issue. 1. Thomas, I really didn’t like him. He was a bit sleazy and I found it hard to think he’d be so unprofessional early on. For instance, their meet cute, he refuses to leave when she asks him too. His character arc is very limited.
2. The insta lust. There was no build up here. They were both super lusty early on but it took a very long time for anything to happen so there was a lot of repetitive and plaintive “yearning”. This is a closed door romance too, so it could be disappointing to some.
3. I felt that there were sudden pivots of behaviour that came out of nowhere, like Reese’s moment in the lab with the security cameras.
4. As soon as he started calling her baby 🤢
I found this easy enough to read but it felt lacking in its character development. But the droid was honestly inspired.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a review e-copy of this book.
