Unfortunately a DNF for this book. I so loved ‘The last thing he told me’, I had really high hopes for this book.
The heavy architecture theme of the book lost me many times. I understand that it’s a common theme between family members, it just felt a bit like I was reading an architecture book at times.
The plot was ok and if I had lots of time I might sit and make it to the end of the book. However, the story hasn’t gripped me at all and I’ve decided not to finish.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this ARC.

A slow paced mystery about two siblings who investigate the death of their father and the final hours of his life leading up to his death.
I love Laura Dave’s writing style and the way she writes broken, complicated characters really well, so I would recommend this book and her as an Author based on this alone. However, I did not find the 50 year long love story between Liam and Cory very emotional and so was not invested in this part of the book at all. Overall, I enjoyed it and would recommend if you were looking for a more slow paced read.

This is an engaging and quick read. The pacing was good, with each chapter leaving me eager to know more. The character development was solid, and the author delved deep into the protagonists' thoughts, emotions, and experiences, making them relatable.
I appreciated the atmospheric setting the author established right from the first page — the vivid descriptions painted a clear picture in my mind, immersing me in the story. The twists and turns kept me engaged. However, I found some parts of this storyline too predictable for my preferences.
Overall, I believe that those who enjoy character-driven, contemporary fiction with an air of mystery will find this book to their liking. While this may not be my favourite by this author, I still thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it to fans of suspenseful and thought-provoking novels.

An interesting story where a half brother and sister try to find out what really happened when their father died. Plenty of people in it not being helpful to them and old secrets coming to the fore. The reader is drip fed the relevant information throughout before it comes to a climatic ending.

Enjoyed reading this new author. Spent most of the book trying to work out who the culprit was and succeeded just before the reveal so pretty good! worth reading 5 stars

Laura Dave has her own unique way of writing. Because it's built on so much more than a thriller. There is so much emotion, love and family dimensions woven into the stories. So they hit deeper and in that way alone make a gripping read.
I really enjoyed this one too. And once again we have a victim with an unknown past, and what their family members must find out and resolve to find the answers to what actually happened to their loved one.
In this case we have 2 siblings setting out to.find the answers of what happened to their dad. And it is not what they've been told or think.

I enjoyed reading but I felt that I wasn’t really that into the storyline throughout. I loved how in detail the world building was as I felt that was necessary to understand how loved their dad’s property was. I liked the ending and how you saw what happened with Jack and also her dad. I didn’t really see the twist but I felt that once it got to that I didn’t really care too much who had done it. Enjoyed as a palette cleanser book though

I found this book very slow going and struggled to finish it. It wasn't what I was expecting and is more of a drama than a thriller.

After the death of their father, Liam, Nora, and Sam work together to find out whether his fall was maybe not so accidental after all.
For me, this book came across as more a family drama than a mystery. There just wasn't really any suspense, and the slow pace of the story just didn't grip me or keep me intrigued enough to NEED to know more.
The little love story woven between chapters was decent enough, but I wanted more as it lacked depth as so much was missed out of the relationship.
I liked the authors style of writing, and I hadn't figured out the ending by the time we got to the big reveal, which was good as a lot of these types of books lately have been rather predictable to say the least.
Thank you to the publisher for allowing me to read an advance copy of this book via Netgalley.

I really enjoyed Laura Dave’s The Last Thing He Told Me so was very excited for this. The book follows siblings who come together after the death of their father with the suspicion that his death wasn’t an accident.
I was expecting this to be a thriller that kept me guessing but if i’m honest I just found it boring. It was very slow and didn’t grab my attention at all.

I enjoyed this steady, warm story of family, love and secrets. The dynamic between Nora and Sam was an enjoyable one to read and the dual timeline worked well. There were plenty of mysteries and twists throughout to make this an enjoyable read.

Having enjoyed The Last Thing He Told Me, I was looking forward to reading another book by Laura Dave and I binged this in one day!
I really enjoyed the pacing of the story for the most part but found the initial few flashbacks did slow things down a little.
Although I felt the plot twist was a little predictable, the story was wrapped up quite nicely at the end and it was an enjoyable read!

This was a tense story about the death of a father and his children trying to find out more about his death.
Their search brings to the fore secrets about his life and his loves and we slowly watch them unearth the truth about what happened.
I loved the different relationship dynamics in this book, there are different challenges the characters face and I enjoyed this dynamic within the story and plot.
A great book which had me reading long
Into the night.

The Night We Lost Him is a slow burning family drama that focuses more on the characters and their relationships than a gripping mystery. I enjoyed learning more about the characters and the question of whether Nora's father's death was really an accident was enough of a mystery to keep me wanting to read on..
I liked Nora, though I never felt like i really got to know her well - it felt like she kept the reader at a bit of a distance, similar to the way she treated her partner Jack.
The quality of writing is really good. It feels like Laura Dave gives a very honest portrayal of grief and the struggle of trying to hold yourself together when you've just lost someone unexpectedly.
We have two narratives to get lost in: one present day storyline as Nora and her half brother Sam investigate what might have happened to their father, and one that takes us back many years ago, when their father meets and falls in love with a mystery woman.
There wasn't a huge amount of surprises or twists in this novel but I liked the ending and felt this was a solid, satisfying slow burner.

I tried not to let the outstanding successes of seemingly everyone in this book get in the way of enjoying it. Everyone was super wealthy and no one liked anyone else very much. The pace was slow and it proved more of a family drama than thriller.

A wealthy busness man falls to his death at his secluded property. It is recorded as an accident but is it?
The man has had a colourful and secretive past and Nora and her half brother Sam are convinced it wasn't an accident.
However, their relationship isn't great and they soon realise their father's past is colourful and tangled.
Can they prove he was murdered?

Quite a suspenseful story that took me to various ideas as to how it would end. A story of how a family try to cope in unsuspecting circumstances that leads to uncovering people are not or who they seem.

I enjoyed The Night we Lost Him. It’s more of a family saga and mystery than a thriller but it is certainly a page turner.
The book starts as Nora’s dad Liam falls from a cliff at his remote hideaway in California. From there the story is told in the first person by Nora as she reluctantly teams up with her half brother Sam to investigate her father’s death. He doesn’t believe it was an accident and soon she begins to doubt it too. Alternate chapters tell the story of Liam’s relationship with a woman called Cory - from high school to the present day. Nora and Sam soon begin to realise there was a woman in Liam’s life that they knew nothing about but who is she?
Laura Dave keeps you guessing till the last few chapters. It’s a well devised story and very readable.

One beautiful Californian evening, a wealthy businessman falls to his death from his secluded cliff-top house onto the rocks below.
A tragic accident? Or murder?
This a well written and intriguing story. It gets you fully involved with the characters and, for me, totally immersed in their lives. It’s one of those books I found hard to put down. A great read.

I was a little unsure at the start as didn’t particularly like the characters but the story quickly had me hooked and I really enjoyed it.
Thank you to #NetGalley and #RandomHouseUkCornerstone for a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
