I love the message of this book. We’re all unique and beautiful. I also like that it could appreciated at any day. It’s written simplistically enough that a young child can understand, but it could also lead to deeper discussions with older children.
In this picture book, we see the text set among drawings of faces, as the author considers the meaning behind what we look like. I liked the message of the book. The illustrations were nice, softly drawn diverse faces. There were a few pages where the illustrations overpowered the text and it was difficult to read. Overall, I think this book would be great for one-on-one reading so you can start conversations about diversity with a child.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a digital ARC of this picture book.
This book just didn’t work for me. The poem is nice but almost nonsensical. The illustrations are okay but not my favorite. I am just the wrong reader for this book. It’s not bad but it’s not what I would recommend either.
This book is a stunner. Beautiful illustrations, messaging and lyrics. This book would be excellent for children to immerse themselves in recognizing diversity, defining inclusion and recognizing differences not only in one another but in nature around them.
This title would be excellent for the first few weeks of school. The illustrations are inspiring - loads of different compositions inspire several different related art project ideas.
This is a book I am adding to my list to purchase.
I really like this artist's work, and in this new picture book, she illustrates lots of different faces, representing different types of diversity and exploring our differences and commonalities through the text. She also reflects on and illustrates fanciful ideas, and the imaginative elements keep this book from feeling too didactic. This is creative and interesting, and can appeal to all ages.
Thank you NetGalley, Penguin Random House Canada | Tundra Books, and Julie Morstad for the early access copy to A Face is a Poem,
A Face is a Poem is a story that explores the beauty and diversity of faces. The illustrations were unique and beautiful. The story highlighted diversity of each facial feature in a fantastical way.
