This womens fiction book follows a woman who is in her 50’s recently divorced due to a cheating spouse. It follows her as she rebuilds her life while working and later becoming a partner in a travel agency. Her friends and coworkers are quirky which adds to the appeal of he book.
I found this to be a fun and witty read which came at the right time. Although this story is about how Angie moves on after her nearly 25 year marriage ends, it is not depressing. Angie was better off without him and her friend Patty is a huge help in keeping her friend moving forward. I just thought the story was just so clever to keep it entertaining as I found myself laughing out loud.
Thank you Netgalley for an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
I loved the stereotypical divorce breakdown that Angie goes through. The journey Angie went on had me smiling so often for all the quirks that her and her best pal Patty go through. Patty is the ultimate hype friend we would all want on our side if our man was ever found to be cheating! I absolutely pictured my Mum and her friends up to some of the mischief these two did together.
I wasn’t the biggest fan of Angie’s daughter Zoe who seems to be a bit attention seeking and why is she taking sides with her Dad when he’s the one who played away.
I really loved that this wasn’t set in some picturesque seaside village but old, hearty Manchester. Adding to this, It was so refreshing to not have some young one with the heartbreak but instead a more mature heartbroken heroine!
Laughter, love and music all coming together to make such a great read. Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read it early, I absolutely can’t wait for the next one! I hope it’s as good!
Angie is a recent divorcee over the age of fifty whose husband of almost 25 years left her for the caterer from their daughter's graduation party. She is dealing with finding her identity again and the fall out of a long-term relationship suddenly ending.
I mostly enjoyed the supporting cast of characters. Patty is an absolute hoot and really encouraged Angie to live her best life and figure out what makes her happy. Angie's daughter was not impressed by any of her antics throughout the book but I was hooked watching all of the hijinks from the sideline. Angie's confidence and comfort with herself grew throughout the book.
This would have been a 4-star read for me but I felt that the ending for the ex-husband overshadowed Angie's. I would rate this book 3.75 stars and would recommend it for anyone who wants to see a group of friends embrace their lives and where the journey takes them.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC
Mercury Travel Club follows fifty year old Angie in the year following her divorce.
Angie takes charge of her life and with the help of her friends, meets new people and tries new experiences. Her two friends Patty and Charlie give her encouragement and get her out of her comfort zone.
Angie performs karaoke one night and eventually become a founding member of an 80s cover band. If you like 80s music, you will love this part of the story.
Her boss and friend Charlie helps her realize talents and brings her on as a partner in their travel agency. Angie forms a travel club and begins to plan travel excursions.
The story is well written and the characters are well fleshed out. Angie is not your typical divorcee who feels sorry for herself. She takes action to change her life.

What a truly remarkable book. Angie is recently divorced (her husband cheated on her) and figuring out what to do with herself after almost 25 years of marriage and supporting her husband. This has all the beginnings of a pity party but it turns into Angie taking matters into her own hands to pursue the life she wants. Her best friend Patty is the perfect instigator and supportive friend and I was totally engrossed in watching Angie experiment and grow. All this accompanied by some hijinks and secondhand embarrassment.
I so enjoyed reading this and would highly recommend!
I have just finished this book, and I really enjoyed it. I was after a light read after some very heavy reads recently and this really hit the spot!
The story follows Angie, who has just found her husband cheating and is now divorced from him. She wants to start again on every aspect of her life. We watch as she looks at her career, love life, social life , finances and more. Angie works for a independent travel agency and that is where the fun begins.
Will be recommending this book, has a lovely up beat feel and the writing is very good.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book about Angie, a mature woman in her fifties, basically starting over after her spouse dumps her for a younger woman. This is familiar territory for women's fiction/chick lit, but Angie stood out in resolute determination to get on with her life and in how she handled the sometimes offbeat situations she found herself in.
In her younger years, Angie was a flight attendant who traveled the world. After their daughter was born though, she settled into typical homemaker domesticity, as well as expending a lot of effort getting her husband's business off the ground, only to get zero credit for all of her hard work when they divorced.
Over the course of a year we follow Angie as she comes out of her shell, changes her style, meets loads of new people, tries out various new experiences, including karaoke, (and accidentally becoming a founding member of an 80's tribute band), taking cooking lessons with her 23 YO daughter (which doesn't go particularly well since Angie really can't cook), joining a bookclub, and tentatively entering the dating pool. Most importantly, though, she rediscovers her passion for business and entrepreneurship by coming up with a brilliant idea for a travel club focusing on older singles and empty nesters with plenty of disposable income, and using her divorce settlement, becomes a partner at the travel agency she works at in order to carry out her idea.
At the beginning of the book, Angie is a bit depressed and at loose ends, but by the end of it, she's achieved so much, mainly by being game for anything no matter how doubtful she is inside. She has plenty of anger, jealousy, and hurt to work through, but she does so with humor and grace and never backs down from a challenge. I loved her attitude, the secondary characters were great, the writing was fun, the plot moved along pretty smartly and all in all it was a very enjoyable read. My thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions in this review are my own.
This book was a quick, fun read. There wasn't a lot to the book, in the sense that it was the same story, just a different place throughout.
It wasn't bad though and I definitely laughed out loud at some of the antics the club was involved in.
I'd recommend this cute book.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
The Mercury Travel Club is a sweet story about rebuilding a life after a divorce at an older age. I personally really enjoyed reading it… The characters had depth and the chaos that came with every holiday was well written and believable, I would have loved to be a Mercurialian.
This was a mostly decent read with some caveats. Firstly the main characters adult daughter was trying to police her life “don’t have any fun mom” “don’t embarrass me mom”. The main character, Angie, should have shut this down but instead she finds herself pandering to the daughter. First wet dishrag sign. The other big issue was an intended meet cute that takes place due to harming an animal. How is this even cute? It was kind of horrifying to read. The book was well written and an okay read.
Thank you Joffe books/Chock Lit and NetGalley for this ARC of the Mercury Travel Club by Helen Bridgett.
I really love the late in life coming of age/ finding love trope, and in this- Helen the author doesn't disappoint. Angie is in her 50' s newly single and this book is a lovely book of self-discovery through the chick lit genre.
I loved Angie's character, the plot was good too and ended up reading it as soon as I got it!
Finally a romcom with an older demographic. Fans of 80's pop music will love the karaoke girl group storyline. When your in the mood for a little British humor and nostalgia.
I was very intrigued with the cover art and the synopsis of this book. I was excited to see what was going to happen. The excitement came a lot from NetGalley giving me a free kindle copy in exchange for an honest review. And my honest review is that I could not finish this book. I got 50% of the way through and could not finish it. The only things that had happened in half the book is that our main character becomes a business partner with the company she was already working at, and she starts the job that is the title of the book. She also speaks to her love interest when they had never spoken previously even though they had plenty of opportunity to do so before. I really wanted to like this book. It fell really flat for me and I will not be finishing it.
I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This was a fun book. It was nice to read a book where the main character is older than the usual twenty-somethings!
I was in a book rut all last month & this one brought me right out of it. I like to think that Angie & I share similar characteristics & it was fun seeing her pull herself up by her bootstraps & take charge of her life again. Patty was the best friend of everyone's dreams & I was so pleased that all the characters got a happy ending. I loved the travel vibes of the story & wish this could be my job, but I wish we could have been "traveling" more throughout the book. However, I can't recommend this one enough!
A fun story about a newly divorced woman as she moves on and finds a new way forward. I enjoyed the characters and adventures of this quick read. Lots of travel and craziness.
A very enjoyable, quick read about starting over in middle age. Relatable characters and a well crafted storyline; the only draw back, for me was that the ending was a little too sweet.
Thank you to NetGalley and Choc-Lit
Most books that read that are which are about women over 50 and divorced usually showcase all the negativity and drama that’s involved but in this book it was totally different!! I really enjoyed this story. It’s about a woman named Angie, and she is learning how to live her life after divorce. Her friend Patty helps her learn how to live life to the fullest and to be positive. Angie helps ladies go on holidays where they could recover themselves and enjoy life. This book was so much fun to read and easy to follow. I also loved the book club and karaoke aspects within the story. I would definitely recommend this book and would read more from this author.!
*4 Easy reading offering amusing entertainment
Beginning on the day Angela Shepherd moves into a rented house while her family home is being sold, what follows are the next twelve months of Angie's life. Fifty plus, and newly divorced, feeling at a low ebb with her confidence shot to pieces after her husband's abandonment, Angie's friends and work colleagues encourage her during her year of self discovery. Discarding her trainers and comfy cardigans, with a new hair style, enjoying nights out and joining various clubs, even attending speed dating (not good), she blossoms. Trying to boost sales in the travel agency where she works, Angie decides to provide holidays for people like herself: middle aged, single and keen to travel. Her idea becomes a roaring success and The Mercury Travel Club is created.
Good ending with the mystery of the phantom gardener uncovered.
