There is a killer on the loose in Cornwall and Lauren and her deputy Matt are on the case!

It seems that women involved in the fishing industry are being targetted and there are several people who look good for it. However, there are also people who SEEM to be a good fit but who really aren't.

All in all, I enjoyed this book but I did feel like it ran out of steam. When the killer was revealed, it was almost an anti-climax. Shame, because the story had really good bones.

4 stars from me.

Thank you to NetGalley and Storm Publishing.

Book Review: Murder at Land's End by Sally Rigby

Sally Rigby's Murder at Land's End is a gripping addition to her well-loved crime series, captivating readers with its intricate plot and compelling characters. Set in the picturesque yet eerie backdrop of Land's End, the novel follows detectives Veronika Pope and Callum Redmond as they unravel a complex murder mystery that keeps readers guessing until the very end.

Rigby excels in creating a vivid sense of place, with her detailed descriptions bringing the coastal setting to life. The novel's pacing is brisk, and the narrative unfolds with well-timed twists and turns that maintain suspense throughout. The chemistry between Pope and Redmond adds depth to the story, providing both tension and camaraderie that enrich the reader's experience.

One of the book's strengths lies in its character development. Rigby’s protagonists are multidimensional, each grappling with personal and professional challenges that make them relatable and engaging. The plot is well-crafted, with clues and red herrings deftly woven into the storyline, ensuring that readers are constantly engaged in solving the mystery alongside the detectives.

However, some readers might find the ending slightly predictable, as certain tropes common in the genre are employed. Additionally, while the dialogue is generally sharp and realistic, there are moments where it feels a bit forced or clichéd.

Overall, Murder at Land's End is a thoroughly enjoyable read for fans of crime fiction. Sally Rigby delivers a solid mystery with well-drawn characters and a captivating setting, making it a worthy installment in her series. This novel is sure to satisfy both new readers and long-time fans of Rigby's work.

Absolutely well done, and one that will keep you reading late into the night.

When the body of a young woman is found, a slip of paper in her mouth, Lauren is trying to figure out who would want her dead. She seemed to have a promising future, although there were things she was hiding from those around her.
As another body turns up, the heat is on to find the killer before it is too late, and more victims begin to stack up.

Sally Rigby gets another five stars for the latest installment of this series. I love the characters and can’t wait for the next one.

She looked like a mermaid lying on the rocks with her hair spread around her. When Lauren & Matt arrive at the scene initially it seems like a tragic accident or a suicide- until the bruises on the neck are discovered & the lines from a poem in her mouth. The victim is a popular girl around the area- with a secret job on the fishing boats & a dislikeable boyfriend. When another body is found in similar circumstances Lauren, Matt & the team worry that this may not be the end of the deaths.

I have enjoyed this series from the start & am enjoying seeing Lauren unwind & relax, making her team a much more cohesive unit. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book- I'm already looking forward to the next one!

Detective Lauren Pengelly and her deputy Matt Price are back in a new investigation and it is a pleasure to meet them again. It has been six months since Matt has joined the Cornwall police department and we see that the whole team has finally coalesced into a single entity that works towards a single goal. And this hardly wrought team work is put to the test when the dead body of a young woman is found amongst the rocks near the beach and all evidences indicate that it might be the work of a serial killer.

As the team investigates further, they find that this whole case is a web of truths and lies, with the actual facts lying somewhere in between. Though the initial suspicions fall on the girl's annoying boyfriend, subsequent enquiries points the arrow in the direction of a killer who might be motivated by something else altogether and I totally couldn't guess it almost till the end of the book.

As always, author Sally Rigby has created an interesting police investigative thriller out of an unassuming situation which is a quick read as well. That, to me, is the most appealing aspect of Rogby's Cornwall Murder series of books. Inspite of the short length, she manages to bring in excellent emotional depths for her characters, which in turn gives them great depth. This is not the typical book with people who possess out-of-the-world skills and almost instantly know how to progress with the investigation; all the officers in the team including Lauren and Matt follow the evidence, all the while taking one step at a time, and keep working hard till they get clear answers.

The Cornwall Murder Mystery books are worth reading for the simplistic but effective stories they are. I can't recommend them enough particularly for readers who like well-rounded books of short lengths.

Cornwall Murder Mystery series book 3.

This is a great series and I loved this book. I flew through it in 2 sittings as I was totally engrossed. I'm really enjoying getting to know this team and can't wait to read what they're up to next.

When the body of a young woman is found by the coast in Land’s End, Cornwall, Detective Lauren Pengelly and her deputy Matt Price are first on the scene. Sophie Bethany Yates was well-known around the docks – a pretty girl from up the coast, always dreaming of something more. As locals jostle the barricades for a better look, whispers go round that Sophie’s boyfriend Samuel was more than capable of murder.

But Lauren isn’t ready to close the case, even after Samuel can’t give a reliable alibi for the night Sophie died. Something about the crime scene feels off – a hunch confirmed when they find a tiny slip of paper hidden inside Sophie’s mouth, reading “Men must work and women must weep”. It’s a break in the case, but a confusing one. What does the cryptic message mean, and how come Lauren feels like she’s heard it before?

But then another young woman is found on the sand, a curl of paper between her lips. Lauren knows they’re running out of time to catch the killer. As she begins to untangle the dark truth around what’s happening to these girls, she discovers a darker side to the scenic town – and to Sophie herself, who wasn’t all she seemed. Hiding in plain sight is a twisted killer, whose desperate plans mean nobody is safe for long… but can Lauren piece together the truth before they find her first.

I found this book entertaining and engaging.
It’s the third in the series, but it can be read as a stand-alone, although it’s better to read the books in order.
The mystery is fast-paced, gripping, and it kept me guessing until the last twist. I was glad to reconnect with the well-developed characters.
I recommend it; Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine

Murders at the Sea!

Detectives Lauren Pengelly & Matt Price are put on the case of the suspicious death of Sophie Yates. Upon inspection of the posed body on the jetty, they find a note tucked into her mouth with an odd message - "Men must work and women must weep." As they work to unravel the meaning, another young women working in the fishing industry turns up dead in a similar manner. She too has a note in her mouth with a puzzling message. How are they connected?

Thanks to NetGalley, Storm Publishing and Sally Rigby for the eARC.

This is the third book in the 'Cornwall Murder Mystery' series by Sally Rigby featuring Detective Lauren Pengelley and deputy Matt Price investigate the murder of two young women involved in the local fishing industry. Is this the work of a misogynist serial killer?

The mystery was compelling, but I found the pace slow to hold my attention. Sometimes too many descriptors instead of moving the action along. I haven't read the earlier two, but its clear there's a growing connection between widower single dad Matt and his boss Lauren. If that's the case I found it a bit ick for some reasons (I guess I just don't see the chemistry and would prefer not to see private and professional lives meshed in this series).

Overall this is a solid crime mystery.

Thanks to Storm and NetGalley for the ARC.

A good murder mystery which I enjoyed reading. I liked the camaraderie between the team while they worked towards solving the murders. A worthy read. I received an ARC copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Having read Sally Rigby’s other Cornwall Murder Mysteries I am not unfamiliar with her subject nor her writing style. When I finished The Hidden Graves of St Ives I remember being disappointed, not so much with the story but the writing style. I thought it was a solid 3-1/2 stars and I rounded up to 4. Unfortunately Rigby’s latest foray in this series felt exactly the same. Too much stilted character study which overshadowed the mystery. The dialogue and inner machinations were trivial, unrealistic and never ending. Having just finished the latest Detective Josie Quinn installment by Lisa Regan I could not help but compare and DCI Lauren Pengelly falls far behind.

Thank you Storm Publishing and NetGalley for a copy.
