The Deciding Hour
Jerrod O. Fasan, Jerrod Fasan
This is a difficult book to read, review and rate.
In this tale a six young men in their twenties are on their way home from a trip. When it begins to storm they take shelter in an unusual hotel. Their rooms were a lot nicer than they expected. What begins as a surprisingly enjoyable stay quickly turns into a terrifying experience. The men are forced to play a game if they are going to ever check out of the hotel. The game knows the secrets of each young man. This tale forces the reader to consider redemption and repentance, punishment, and judgement.
The plot had great possibilities, but it fell short of my expectation. The writing doesn’t flow smoothly, the dialogue doesn’t feel comfortable, and the characters are not well fleshed out. There is an interesting lesson taught in this tale but it is painful to learn it.
This thriller is an absolute page-turner that will keep you hooked from beginning to end. The author's writing style is immersive, making it easy to get lost in the story and even feel apart of it. Haha, due to just how scary it was at times, I can't say that was always a good thing. The characters are complex and well-crafted, each with their own unique personalities and motivations. The plot twists are expertly woven into the narrative, leaving you guessing until the very end. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a thrilling and captivating read.
I absolutely devoured this novel in almost no time at all, that is just how amazing it was. “The Deciding Hour” is a uniquely thrilling, slow descent into madness thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat! Horror fans will LOVE this.
The Deciding Hour was atmospheric from start to finish. This debut thriller from this author is a must read. "The Deciding Hour" will take you on an emotional journey that you won't forget anytime soon with its eclectic cast of characters and bone chilling descriptions and environments. The characters in the book had great chemistry, and their interactions were pivotal in moving the story forward. The author did an exceptional job of bringing the characters to life, making them feel like real people with relatable struggles. Overall, the dynamic between the characters was well-crafted, adding depth and richness to the story. With its powerful themes of sadness, fear, grief, and redemption. With confidence, I can say it's almost certain to capture the hearts and minds of its readers.. If you love a good page-turner that will keep you on the edge of your seat, then look no further. This is the book for you!
The Deciding Hour is a truly remarkable Christian thriller. It's rare to find a book that combines faith and suspense so seamlessly, but this one does it beautifully. The story is both gripping and thought-provoking, with themes of redemption and forgiveness woven throughout. The characters are relatable and well-developed, making it easy to become invested in their journey. Overall, this book is a must-read for anyone who loves a good thriller with a powerful message.
I do love this cover and was one of the factors for deciding to request this book!
I feel that this really should have been read over again before even submitted because the grammatical errors was very put off and makes you not want to move forward with the book and just DNF the book! I pushed through because i do not like to DNF books but it did not get better as you read it and it is awkward trying to focus on the preface of the book.
The guys in the book are not likeable and they do a lot of things for dumb reasons. There are flashbacks as to why they do things and was just not even interesting. It was just not a good read and not sure i would read more from the author.
Thanks NetGalley for letting me read and review.
Six friends seek shelter to evade a torrential storm and decide to hunker down in a hotel. Unfortunately for them, this would turn out to be a big mistake as they run into a situation of nightmarish proportions. This is a book that kept me hooked from the very beginning. The 10% or so weaves in an inspiring message to bring everything together. This a captivating read that once finished, it would have the reader questioning their own life decisions. I honestly have not read a book that kept me this engaged for a long, long time. Definitely look forward to seeing more from this author, he definitely posses great talent within this genre.
The first half of this book was gripping. Watching the characters face life and questions. It then slowed down and was almost as if the author was trying to put too much into the story ending., sadly. The message throughout is good and encouraging.
I read reviews where people decided not to finish because of the many grammatical errors, but I decided that I wanted to persevere to see what happened. I shouldn't have. It didn't get better. The grammar isn't just bad, it's so awkward. People don't talk like that. And the story is about these young guys who aren't likable, and some of them do terrible things for really dumb reasons. We learn about the bad acts through flashbacks and there are awkward attempts to show time passing in the latter section, with about the last 15% of the book being ... some sort of religious thing?
Anyway, I thank NetGalley for allowing me to read this in exchange for an honest review.
Poorly developed characters. The book was all over the place, overly descriptive at times and no imagery at other times. Good premise but not well executed. Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book
I ended up DNF at 22%. I tried but just could not get into it. The book sounded great but the writing was poor and nothing was enticing me to keep moving forward.
I'm sorry that this novel gets only 2 stars, but unfortunately it was poorly written.
The first half reads like a very bad horror movie. The second is a quite boring narrative of the following years. The issues redemption and forgiveness are so important, but I guess that this novel won't reach those to whom it is intended. I must admit that I skipped great chunks because of too much redundancies.
This was hard for me to read. I just couldn’t get into the story. The characters aren’t relatable but the story itself is interesting.
I was looking forward to this book based on the description but I couldn't get past chapter two.
I have nothing bad to say about the author or publisher and this is just my personal opinion.
The first chapter alone was riddled with errors. Spelling errors, grammatical errors, and punctuation errors. An editor, proofreader, or even beta readers are desperately needed.
The sentences were written in a way that I found myself re-reading them so they would make sense. It felt as if the author was trying to sound literary but it was just confusing. Again, an editor really needs to help rewrite.
The characters didn't make sense. Five "best friends" with nothing in common are coming back from a road trip to Acapulco. They don't act like friends and they could have been named "Random male characters 1-5" since none of them had much of a personality. Oh, and one is a devout Christian who likes to preach to the others. But, hey, they're all friends so nobody minds!
The dialogue also suffers. Nobody talks like that. Nobody. It was stilted and didn't make sense. We use contractions when we speak. Example "Let's go check that out" is written in here as "Let us go check that out". It makes the characters sound like robots.
By the time they arrived at a hotel with a creepy desk clerk, I just didn't care about them at all. So there was no tension or fear. That's where I checked out, gave up the ghost, and realised that life is too short to read books you don't like.
Writing a book takes a lot of work and I give the author credit for doing something that the vast majority of people will never do: write a book and put it out for the public to critique.
This is just my personal opinion and, who knows, you might actually enjoy it. So while I don't personally recommend this book, if you like the description go ahead and take a chance. It's just not for me.
DNF at 17%
This story of six friends returning from a summer vacation in Mexico and finding a scary hotel was incredibly poorly written and was filled with grammatical errors. Also, if you are planning to try to shove your religion down my throat, warn me about that so I’ll know not to read your book at all.
Thank you to NetGalley and to the publisher for this advance readers copy in exchange for an honest review. Took me a bit to get into this one but overall a good thriller!!
This book was definitely a different kind of read than I normally read! It had suspense, intrigue, action, murder, mystery, A very strange storyline! It was worth reading bit just a little out there for me! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
