I'm not quite sure what age range this is for since it's not listed anywhere, but I'm assuming ages 2-3 years. You're supposed to sing along to "Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush" as you see the dogs brush their teeth, get dressed, go to school, eat lunch, go swimming, etc. I absolutely loved the illustrations and the font was easy to discern from busy graphics.
Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Frances Lincoln Children's Books | Frances Lincoln Children's Books for an Advanced Reader's Copy (ARC) in exchange for my honest opinion.
A very common nursery rhyme (“This is the Way”/“Here Wo Go Round the Mulberry Bush”), but DOGS.
This gives me such Richard Scarry’s Busy Town vibes. There’s a LOT going on! Most of the book is about a class of pups, going about their day, learning and doing crafts and playing. And we see them over and over, learning their personalities.
I think this is a PERFECT book for that 4-5 age range. There’s so much going on that the kid reader can point out. Perhaps you could challenge them to find a specific dog on each reading, and follow that dog’s individual story. That would give this INCREDIBLE repeat-read potential. Plus, the text is very repetitive, so they’ll be able to join along in the song easily, especially if it’s a rhyme you’ve done before.
This is a great gift for any dog-loving kid. Even beyond that, the cuteness and liveliness will please plenty of others.
Advanced reader copy provided by the publisher.
This is the Way in Dogtown, written and illustrated by Ya-Ling (Jade) Huang is an adorable picture book which depicts a day in the life of the dogs that live in Dogtown, while doing all the things a young child does in their day.
The text is set to the song "Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush". Young children will be so engaged with the text as it’s most likely a familiar tune for them. The illustrations which portray the activities that fill their day are beautiful with lots of vibrant colors and plenty of details that can lend itself to additional conversation and building valuable background knowledge while exposing children to new vocabulary..
I love the way the book starts with morning activities and moves through the day until it’s time for bed, reinforcing the skill and understanding of chronological order, as the events of the day are presented in the order that they actually happen.
As an early childhood educator, I can highly recommend this book for both the school and home setting. This isn’t a one time and your done book. I imagine a child/class requesting it on repeat.
I want to thank Quarto Publishing Group - Frances Lincoln Children's Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read This is the Way in Dogtown in exchange for my honest review. I truly enjoyed reading it!
The illustrations are the absolute best part about this picture book. They are fun to follow along, there are a lot of details (and to my delight a lot of frogs). But... but I feel like the text was uninspiring and bland. I know it's a classic nursery rhyme, but I feel like we can change and adapt things and make them more fun, you know?
This story was set around a popular rhyme, ‘Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush”, and is the perfect book for a young reader who loves dogs. The drawings were adorable and I loved how it focused on dogs doing everyday activities that one could resonate to. I’m sure a young reader who loves pictures books would absolutely adore this story!

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with access to read this book!
This was an adorable rhyming book set to the tune of "Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush" with cute artwork that I recommend to children of all ages. My niblings will be especially pleased with this new addition to their library.
Cute book that can be read or sung along with the rhyming pattern of “Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush”. It focuses on dogs getting up, eating, going to school, getting ready for bed etc. The pictures are very cute. The rhyming is catchy and I can see this being enjoyed by preschoolers or very young readers.
Originally published in the UK in 1988, this engaging picture book is a variation on the nursery song “Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush.” The setting is a town filled with various breeds of dogs, living in houses, and going through their day getting ready for school and work, performing daily activities, and finally getting ready for bed. The detailed cartoon artwork was achieved using watercolor, gouache, pencil, and collage, depicting dogs wearing human clothing as they go about town. Although the rhyming chant can be a little awkward at times, the repetition and chanted actions, such as “brush, brush, brush,” make this a great choice for storytime.
I found it very hard to rate children's books so everything is a 5 star read for me!!
I really loved this book, the illustrations are so beautiful and captivating that I found myself smiling through every page I read.
The story itself is very beaitiful and inspiring <3
There isn't much of a story to it. It's mostly a fun little book to sing along to, with vibrant colours for very young children. Cute illustrations, but very surface-level in terms of content.
So are we suppose to sing this book? Because it will be weird if we just read this book. A bit disappointed of the content but I give this book 4 stars because of the amazing artwork.
This is an adorable picture book. It is easy and fun to read, with lots of different things to notice and talk about in the illustrations. Using the familiar tune, readers follow dogs throughout their day as they wake up, go to school, come home, and eventually go to bed. This would be a sweet book for any child - especially one who will soon be going to school or daycare for the first time.
In 'This is the Way in Dog Town,' young children learn what dogs in Dog Town do during the day. This book is set to the familiar melodious rhyme, 'Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush.' This familiar tune will help children follow the activities of a Dog family as they get dressed, brush their teeth, go to school, do their work, play a game, eat lunch, paint a picture, go swimming, go home, eat dinner, take a bath, and go to bed.
This book is both written and illustrated by Ya-Ling Huang. Using watercolor and colored pencils, Ya-Ling's hand-drawn illustrations have a transparent look with layers of color.
"This is the way we paint a picture, paint a picture, paint a picture.
This is the way we paint a picture, in the afternoon."
Splat,
splat,
splat!
This picture depicts various breeds of dogs sitting, lying, and standing around a room, including bulldogs, poodles, and collies. In the corner, the teacher wipes the sweat off of his forehead with a cloth. There is a dog painting a wall. Several dogs hold up pictures of their artwork while smiling. A dog is laughing while holding a paint brush and a can of spilled paint at his feet. A second group of dogs is creating art. Another dog sits with a palette of paint colors. The room is a complete mess! Nonetheless, the dogs are having a lot of fun.
It's such a cute book. Toddlers and preschoolers will love this book. You should check it out.
Dog town is just like our town, and dog has to do everything I have to do!
After reading the book you can use the song to encourage reluctant children to brush their teeth, go to school, have a bath etc.
Cute book but nothing really new, but I'm sure the kids will love it especially the song.
Vastly detailed and friendly artwork. Rhythmic writing inspires a variety of song-like reading. Emphasises repetition that emits a playful tone. Depicts the importance of routine and daily life. Light narrative that is clever and effective. Engaging characters that have a humorous side to them. Silly atmosphere that leaves no room for seriousness. Overall, a great read.
Very funny pictures in the book, but the story wasn't really anything I can tell much about because there was little text and a lot of repeating text.
Because I read the book in under 10 minutes, I didn't even put it on my Reading Challenge.
Too bad though, because I thought this could have been a wonderful book.
A delightful book for small children that teaches them about routines and what people do all day. Lots to see on every page and the illustrations are delightfully. Very sweet book
This is a sweet rhyming picture book that would be perfect for singing with children. It is quite cute and would also be great to read before bedtime.
With adorable illustrations, this book is a repetitive way of helping kids see the value in routine.
This was a cute, simple book, with beautiful illustrations. The text features a familiar tune, and goes through a day of routines in Dog Town. The illustrations are colorful and fun.
