Maybe the writing style is just not for me. It sparks enough for curiosity to what happen next but it just fell flat to me.
But overall, it was okay and interesting concept. Romance was fast as well but I have no problem with that.
Thank you NetGalley & publisher for this eARC.
Every once in a while I pick up a book from a new author. Because you never know if you are going to discover the next Jennifer Armentrout (one of my favorite YA writers).
And boy, was I glad I read this debut from Leigh Eskin Mascolino! She gives the stories about genies and djinn’s a total new spin: are those all powerful beings the good guys or the bad guys?
Melody has believed her whole life, that they are the bad guys, responsible for killing her mother. So, she steers clear of them. But then, she is asked to entrap a djinn, to help him save other djinn’s. The story has a lot of twists and turns and keeps you guessing. So, you probably shouldn’t start the book in the evening or you may lose some sleep over it.
Absolutely a wonderful debut and I’m looking forward to reading more from Leigh! Four out of five stars from me and a special thank you for Netgalley for providing the arc.
I loved the fresh take and unique plot and really enjoyed it as an adult reader!
I love reading about Djinns and I thought the story was really well paced.
Fantasy adventure story with the power of Djinn bringing terror and possibilities. Are the Djinn evil, or mis-understood and mis-used? Melody’s past colours her experience to believe the former but future experience might alter that in the flash of a Djinn’s wish. This is the author’s first book, nurtured over many years before being released for public viewing. I’m glad she found the courage to do so. Thank you to Leigh Eskin Mascolino and NetGalley for the ARC. The views expressed are all mine, freely given.
This book was very good. It starts with a BANG! I was like well dang that escalated quickly. I really enjoyed the story. It was very fast pace and entertaining. I want more of this story. Cant wait to read more.
I enjoyed reading "the djinn entrapment"
A young adult fantasy novel.
I was captivated by the unique description of the "djinn" and their story.
I loved the friendship between the girls and the strong female narrative. I also enjoyed romance subplot.
Although I had a harder time really connecting to the characters I still had a fun time!
I liked the concept and I'm sure that with a little more work the result could be different, it felt like a Aladdin with him being the Djinn and Jasmine being the savior with magical powers somehow, we have a wicked but a bit annoying Jafar which is also her true father.. I'm not saying is bad but it could be definitly improved
Melody Thompson witnesses her mother’s death at a very young age and learns a terrifying secret: she can see djinn, inhuman spirit creatures with magical powers no one else can see. During a trip to New York with friends Melody meets Adin, a djinn who explains that not only does she have the ability to entrap and command the djinn, but that they need her help to free themselves from the evil Donnovan who wants to destroy them all.
The pacing of the book and the romance is a little fast. It actually takes place in about a week. For this reason every scene is action-packed and the romance blossoms very quickly. I found that Carrie and Zayn’s feelings happened a little more organically (or maybe just slow burn enemies-to-lovers is my favorite trope!).
Melody is a great pov character. Despite her fear and reasons for hating the Djinn (and later Donnovan) she always fights to overcome the horrible things that happen to her and free them rather than holding a grudge. She and her friends are super close and supportive in ways that not many people get to experience these days. The found family feels are rife throughout the book!
Overall a wonderful modern day adaptation of Arabian mythology meets Western witchcraft with just enough action and romance to keep you glued to the page the whole way through!
DNF review
Although the premise sounded compelling and intriguing, unfortunately the story didn't grab me as I hoped. However, those who enjoy YA fantasy with genies might like this one.
With each page turn, readers are drawn deeper into a world where the line between light and shadow blurs, and where the true meaning of power is revealed in unexpected ways.
Overall, I feel like this book will easily consume fantasy and romantasy readers alike. The Djinn Entrapment has a great plot, lots of magis and suspense. It will definitely keep you entertained till the very end.
A fun YA fantasy mystery with elements of romance.
The Djinn in particular are described so vividly and come to life. How the story starts and unfolds is perfectly paced. I read the book in one sitting. The FMC goes on a journey, she experiences grief and overcomes a lot. She is likeable and kind hearted despite the adversity she faces. The romance is well done and you really root for them. The MMC is protective and sweet, if the age gap doesn’t put you off.
There are action scenes, magic, auras, djinns, lovely friendships and strife.
I think this would make a great graphic novel!
I would recommend to any young adult who enjoys fantasy or a mystery.
A captivating young adult fantasy that draws readers into a world of magic, mystery, and romance. Melody Thompson's journey from a young girl hiding her supernatural abilities to a powerful force confronting her destiny is both compelling and inspiring. What I enjoyed most about this book is its richly imagined world of Djinn and the intricate dynamics between characters. From the adrenaline-pumping action scenes to the tender moments of romance, every page is filled with excitement and emotion.
