Jessica Redland has crafted another beautiful tale with A New Dawn at Owl's Lodge, seamlessly blending emotional depth with a heartwarming sense of hope. The novel introduces Zara and Snowy, two characters at pivotal crossroads in their lives. Zara, a globe-trotting TV producer’s assistant, feels unmoored and emotionally distant from her family. Snowy, a reclusive single dad, has built a life around homeschooling his son and caring for injured owls in the peaceful Yorkshire Wolds. Their paths cross when Zara brings an injured owl to Snowy’s secluded sanctuary, sparking a connection that neither expected.
The charm of the story lies in its tender exploration of vulnerability and healing. Zara and Snowy’s growth—both individually and as a pair—is thoughtfully depicted, showing that love and trust can blossom even when one has been hurt by the past. The Yorkshire countryside setting is vividly portrayed, adding a serene and restorative atmosphere to the narrative.
Redland's prose is engaging, and her ability to address complex emotions while maintaining an uplifting tone is commendable. Fans of heartfelt romance will find this story a perfect escape, with its blend of emotional authenticity, relatable characters, and a richly drawn setting.
A New Dawn at Owl's Lodge is a wonderful reminder of the power of connection, second chances, and finding joy in unexpected places. Highly recommended for those who love uplifting and emotionally resonant stories.
I really enjoyed this book, so much.
This is the story of Zara, who is very busy and yet not really fulfilled. She meets Snowy and his son, and the pair of them, as well as the owls that they care for, worm their way into her heart. Snowy holds his cards very close to his chest, however, and it takes time for her to break down his barriers.
I have to admit to not knowing a thing about gymnastics but I found the descriptions of the various processes involved very interesting! I only wish I could move my body in the way that Snowy and Harrison did.
Anyway, this is a really lovely story and it is deeper than just "boy meets girl", which I appreciated.
5 stars from me.
Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books.
If you hadn’t already guessed the main theme of the this book is owls.
Snowy is reclusive and runs an owl rescue centre after he retired from athletics after an injury where he lives with his son and his dad
Zara is an assistant with a film company who doesn’t think anything she does is good enough, when she finds an injured owl while out filming takes it to snowy’s centre.
Snowy is less than welcoming to Zara when she arrives and tries to put her off her coming back to see the owl’s progress. As Zara continues to visit the owl Snowy slowly starts to warm to her and they start to open up to each other.
A lovely read
I have read nearly all of Jessica's books now since discovering her on NetGalley and they get better and better. I love this series the most. It's so warming and cosy and romantic, and I love the Lake District so it's a win-win. I hope this series goes on forever as I will never tire of it.
Please note: I'm afraid I lost my full review that I wrote up and so this is a snapshot of what I thought.
I’ve read a lot of the author’s works, and with any such collection, there’s bound to be ups and downs. This book is not on either end of the spectrum. It is a good book in its genre with a more believable parental divide than some of the other plots.
In the beginning, the two halves of this tale feel like separate sections. This story is a continuation of Healing Hearts at Bumblebee Barn. There’s a further connection to New Arrivals at Hedgehog Hollow which I don’t think is entirely necessary to follow this section of the series, but it might help.
Zara has had trouble with her mother not understanding her or even giving her importance over the years. Snowy is someone who’s been hiding for more than one reason. It’s not difficult to assume correctly ( if you read a lot of these books) what might have happened in the past in either of their lives. They delve into the past at appropriate times to give us the complete picture.
I will not go into further details, but suffice to say there’s a lot of healing and happily-ever-afters by the time one turns the last page.
I would recommend this book to fans of the author and the entire series as a whole, because if one is a completionist like me, they would need to pick this up as well.
I will continue to try other books by the author because het writing style is one that I usually enjoy, even if all the protagonists don’t usually endear themselves to me equally.
I received an ARC thanks to Netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely based on my own reading experience of this and other books by the author.
This is one of my favourite authors, so was an easy pick for me.
The story and characters are wonderful. Such a warm, cozy read. Highly recommend if you want that warm, fuzzy feeling!
Love this ladies book and this one didn’t disappoint
These books are so easy to read you just get lost in them
Jessica is one of my favourite authors and she has so many different series to read
So after you finish this book start one of her other series
Thanks NetGalley
Beautiful story that had me engrossed from the forst page. This author has a fabulous talent of drawing you in so that you become part of the story. Already recommending to friends and family
Another fabulous read by one of my favourite authors., I loved this book and was drawn in immediately to the characters and story. As always there is such warmth in her writing and I loved the stories of the owls, always 5 star reads for me
Another Fantastic read from Jessica Redland, I Always really look forward to reading these books but always hate it when they end. A Fantastic follow on from the Hedgehog hollow series, and it introduces us to The Owl Rescue centre and Snowy and his family.
I really hope we can revisit and see how the story develops in the future with more trips to the centre.
Thank you for allowing me to have a chance to read early.
A New Dawn at Owl’s Lodge by Jessica Redland was a great follow up to Hedgehog Series which I totally loved and also loved this sequel. Read in one day I was hooked. It was great to read all about owls, their natural habitats and nature itself by being introduced to the local owl rescue centre. That said this was only a small part of the book and was a fab book from start to finish.
Thanks to netgalley for the chance to read this book.
Snowy is devoted to looking after his son and running Owls Lodge. He lives a lonely existence but starts questioning whether he can continue to live his life the way he is.
Zara travels around the country as a producers assistant for hit tv shows. She finds an injured owl and takes it to Owls Lodge. She finds Snowy to be frosty and hostile.
They both feel there is a connection between them and a friendship begins to blossom.
Can they both put the past behind them and look towards the future?
Returning to the group of friends who populate the Bumble Bee Barn and Hedgehog Hollow is always a pleasure. This story focuses on Zara, who is Amber's assistant and Snowy, who lives at Owl's Lodge nearby which offers help to wounded owls. It can be read as a standalone story. Both Amber and Snowy have issues from their past. Zara's family issues cut deep with her but she does show a desire to move on and to find a way of believing in her abilities. She has the facility to 'live in the moment' and to enjoy the present.
Snowy has a complicated past which has led to him closing ranks around his grandfather and young son. However, he knows that he cannot hide his son away no matter how much he wants to withdraw from the world. There are some dark issues in Snowy's background but he comes through as a sensitive and essentially kind person. Well up to Jessica Redland's standard, I particularly enjoyed the references to the owls and nature. With well rounded characters and an interesting storyline, this provides an uplifting read.
In short: sympathetic characters in an idyllic setting
I have said it before, and I will say it again.... I Love Jessica Redlands books!.
As expected, this book provided me with that heart-warming feeling I have come to expect whenever I pick one of this authors books up.
The characters and setting are beautifully brought to life by the author and allows you to really lose yourself within the pages.
Jessica Redland aims for the heart with her latest touching, emotional and enjoyable novel, A New Dawn at Owl’s Lodge.
Zara is feeling restless. She knows that she has no reason to complain as she gets to do what she loves as a producer’s assistant, but travelling the country and never putting down roots has made her feel as if she doesn’t belong. Without a place to call home, Zara is feeling apprehensive about what the future holds – especially as she has a fractured relationship with her family and an attraction towards somebody who does not reciprocate her feelings for them.
Snowy is perfectly happy keeping the world at bay at Owl’s Lodge, deep in the Yorkshire countryside. Snowy doesn’t need anything or anyone else in his life. He is perfectly content home-schooling his son and caring for sick owls. However, his lonely existence has caught up with him and he’s started to question whether he should stop hiding in the shadows and take a tentative step back into the world he’s turned his back on.
When Zara brings an injured owl to Owl’s Lodge, Snowy is far from welcoming. He’s cold, frosty and aloof, but the two form a connection neither one of them was prepared for. Both Zara and Snowy have spent years shutting people out, but will they grasp this unexpected opportunity for love and happiness with both hands? Or will their fears and insecurities get the better of them?
Jessica Redland never puts a foot wrong. She writes with sensitivity, warmth and so much heart and pens magical stories that stay with you long after the last page is turned. A New Dawn at Owl’s Lodge is a superb example of her storytelling prowess. This enchanting tale of second chances, stepping out of your comfort zone and falling in love gets under your skin and will bring a tear to your eye on multiple occasions and leave you with a huge smile on your face.
Jessica Redland keeps getting better and better and A New Dawn at Owl’s Lodge is sure to delight her devoted following and new readers alike.
I loved Jessica Redland's latest book, A New Dawn at Owls Lodge. It was great to read Zara and Snowy's tale, filled with new characters and a few familiar faces pop in as well. As always, Jessica describes scenes so clearly that I could almost see them all in Snowy's gym, enjoying the trampoline and pommel horse, or releasing a healed owl in the paddock. A must read if you love a tale of redemption and romance. Plus there are owls!
In this heartfelt tale, Zara, a producer's assistant always on the move, feels unmoored and burdened by family issues and unrequited love, while Snowy, secluded in the Yorkshire Wolds, dedicates his life to homeschooling his son and caring for owls at Owl's Lodge. When Zara brings an injured owl to Snowy's door, his initial coldness belies a deep connection that soon forms between them. As their friendship grows, both must confront their pasts and learn to open up. Their journey of self-discovery and healing is a touching exploration of finding home and happiness in unexpected places.
A New Dawn at Owl's Lodge is the second book in the Bumblee Bee Farm series. We met Zara in the first book, working as a production assistant for reality television. She is dealing with lots of issues in her life, the main one being her family. Her mother has always favoured her brother and his interests came before hers. The only person who supported her was her step-dad. She is living with her boss, and dealing with unrequited love. She knows she wants a change in her life, but she's not sure how. When Zara finds an injured owl and brings it to Hedgehog Hollow, they suggest she take it to Owl's Lodge, a rescue that specializes in Owl. Snowy runs the owl rescue with his father. He homeschools his son as they both have albinism. Snowy was teased as a child and doesn't want that for his son. They hide out at the Lodge, and he only takes Harrison out to see Santa once a year. Snowy has secrets that he is keeping close to the chest, but they are secrets that have seriously affected his life. Can these two wounded souls help one another heal?
I enjoyed A New Daw at Owl's Lodge. I really liked Zara and Harrison. He stole the story for me, being a precocious young man. Snowy was frustrating at times, but he grows and changes as his friendship with Zara grows. His dad is super supportive, but knows he needs to forgive himself before he can move forward. There are a lot of issues and themes in this story, more than usual for a Jessica Redland book. There are themes of bullying, grief, guilt, alcoholism, dysfunctional families, unrequited love, animal rescue, being brave, friendship and romance. I enjoyed seeing Zara's and Snowy's relationship grow from friends to more. I love the animal rescue aspect of these stories, it adds a lovely environmental aspect. The being brave theme was another one that gave me the feels with the mantra, "Be the Bear". I enjoy Jessica Redland's writing and the relationships in her books. I did find this one had a few too many themes for me, but I still enjoyed the story very much.
Jessica Redland does it again! This is a great story full of hope, running after your dreams and overcoming those things that hold us back.
I loved all the characters, and it was great seeing characters from previous Jessica Redland books as well.
I loved learning more about owls and have since been listening out for them on an evening, although I’m yet to spot one.
Definitely recommended this book and all of Jessica’s books. They are great reads that always have a positive message full of hope and following your dreams.
Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley UK for a free ebook in exchange for an honest review.
A great holiday read! Zara has a fulfilling job, but is often at odds with her much-loved family. Her role as an assistant in a film company takes her away from home for a much needed break. Whilst filming, she comes across an injured owl and takes it to the local rescue centre. There she meets the owner, Snowy. Snowy, a renowned athlete, has also retreated from the world and is raising his young son out of the spotlight with the help of his grandfather. Initially at odds, they have more in common than they think if they can learn to open up... A warm-hearted story about love, loss and learning to trust again, set against the back drop of a rescue centre.
