Breaking My Silence made me feel so seen. As someone who does suffer from OCD, because there is quite literally no other way that OCD effects a life, I felt like Alan Sowersby bled onto the pages of this book and let everyone see it for the sole purpose of ensuring that others didn't feel so alone.
Well written, it stuck with me.
This was a well-written memoir that was raw and honest and refused to shy away from the hardest parts of having a mental illness.
I connected so well with the author because I also have my struggles and, like the author, writing is the best coping mechanism I’ve found. It was almost comforting to read the author’s story and how writing has contributed to their recovery. I’m sure this book will resonate with so many people and I hope others will realise the power words can have.
It must have taken a lot of guts to write this book, but I'm glad the author had it. A lot of people will no doubt benefit by the author's courage.
This was such a good read.
Although I don’t “suffer from” OCD, I have other mental health diagnoses. It was so freeing to hear someone verbalise their struggle with Anxiety. It made me feel less alone and so much more seen.
The added humour made what could have been a difficult read much more manageable.
Books like this one are so important. Firstly, someone speaking up can make others feel seen and understood. Secondly, anyone who is hot by “second hand” effects”, ie friends and family of those afflicted, can read a real account of how it feels to be diagnosed. Thirdly, it opens the door for honest communication about a subject that has, for too long, been considered taboo and secretive.
Breaking My Silence is a raw and authentic journey through the struggles of OCD and anxiety, beautifully intertwined with the author's artistic expression. Alan Sowersby's courage to share his story is palpable on every page, offering not only insight into his struggles but also a beacon of strength for others navigating similar waters. Reading this memoir feels like peeling back layers of stigma and discovering the beauty in neurodiversity. It's a touching reminder that sometimes, our greatest challenges can lead us to our truest selves. Through heartfelt prose and poignant artwork, Sowersby invites readers to embrace their own complexities and find solace in the journey toward self-acceptance. Breaking My Silence is not just a book; it's a testament to the power of vulnerability and the resilience of the human spirit.
Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Wow, really pointless. I don't mean that mean, the author meant well and the writing was OK, but what a pointless read
