I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It wax lovely catching up with where Jane is with her career but I thought it would end on a high with her solving something juicy.
It really highlighted how the police force used to be snd the struggles women used to have.
Saved this book for a holiday read
Certainly made the right choice
Always watched Jane and am a big Lynda Is Plante
What a rollercoaster ride so much going on
Read it in two days could not put it down
Thank you netgalley, Lynda Is Plante and Simon & Schuster
This was quite a good read. It had a bit of padding out and I thought the ending could have been better. I have not read any 9f her books before but I enjoyed reading this book.
If you like police procedural books then this one is definitely for you. It oozes classic police drama from the 80’s with its misogyny and discrimination, and who better to deal with the frustrations than newly appointed DCI Jane Tennison.
In my head, having been hooked on the Prime Suspect TV series, Helen Mirren took on the role bringing Jane Tennison to life in this, the final book in the series.
The tenacity and determination with which she faces obstacles in her life drew a few ‘YES!’ gasps from me.
The case is intriguing in itself, but mixed in with the Tennison chemistry as she fights for her place in AMIT, against fierce opposition, also dealing with changes in her personal circumstances gives the reader a gripping, believable read.
Brilliant!
This was my first Lynda La Plante book and it was just ok.
A bit slow for my liking, with unlikeable characters, including the main character Jane.
The crime story was actually quite good but it lacked suspense and surprising twists.
I also found the narrations of Jane’s new relationship with Peter really weird, it should have been exciting and romantic instead it came across as bland and unrealistically quick to develop.
So not a book for me, but thank you anyway to NetGalley and Bonnier Books UK for letting me review this ARC.
The authentic setting, evocative 1990s ethos and relatable characters drew me into this story. Jane Tennison is an iconic detective who needs little introduction. I enjoyed her character development as she reined in her temper and became more political to combat the prejudice and misogyny of the 1990s. The cast of characters is varied, and many are unlikeable, but they are complex and understandable and provide depth and interest. It's an addictive read. I wanted to know what would happen next in the inquiries and how Jane would overcome the toxic atmosphere in her new job situation. I like the negative and positive team dynamics, which make the story believable and realistic, coupled with the investigation details and the charismatic female detective.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher.
Newly promoted to DCI, Jane is subjected to old school tactics and is often given the less important jobs. The books made me angry at times, I was a little bit disappointed that the offices didn’t get there comeuppance, which really made me angry.
I loved the whole tv series and could see Helen Mirren in my head as I read it.
Great book by a great author
As always this author writes well. I’ve read a lot of the authors work but not all. This is a well written book and I hope that other people would enjoy it too. Fascinating threads and great characters. Would really recommend.
Whole Life Sentence is the newest release and the last instalment of the “Tennison” series.
Despite the male chauvinism and resentment she encounters in a male-dominated and occasionally corrupt police force, Jane's resilience and commitment to her job are truly inspiring. The 'Whole Life Sentence' poignantly brings to light the challenges that women often face in law enforcement. I'm certain that many readers, unfortunately, will find this aspect of the storyline all too relatable.
From the beginning to the end, the book absolutely captivated me. Throughout the series, it's evident how much Jane has grown. She has developed patience and the ability to refrain from acting impulsively, opting instead to keep her composure. Now, she effectively utilises her intelligence and resourcefulness to accomplish her objectives.
La Plante's skilful storytelling takes us on a journey that becomes more intriguing with each book. Her adeptness in solving the cases is not just gripping, but also deeply emotive, evoking a strong sense of engagement and introspection. This was a 24-hour read for me.
This is a well-deserved five-star read. With “Whole Life Sentence” as a satisfying conclusion, I am now eagerly anticipating Prime Suspect Book 1 to continue Jane’s career progression.
I have read a few Lynda La Plante books and love her writing style and characters. This Jane Tennison follow-on was a real page turner and did not disappoint. Would definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys crime books.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion
I always really enjoy Lynda La Plante books and this was no exception. It was a great book and I would definitely recommend it.
Jane Tennyson had just passed her exams and been promoted to Detective Chief Inspector. She made it known that she wanted to be part of AMIT ( Area Major Investigation Team.) She was appointed to AMIT but was given the worst office, the smallest team and a cold case to investigate. The other senior officers weren’t impressed that she had been appointed to AMIT as she was a woman!
The case Jane was given was of the disappearance of Brittany Hall - a young girl who had been missing for five years. Jane found some gaping holes in the previous investigation so had to almost start again.
Jane and her assistant Maureen worked hard to try and find out what had happened to Brittany despite a number of obstacles.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Whole Life Sentence follows on from the previous book where Jane has recently ended a relationship and is waiting to hear about a promotion and transfer to a new department. Her appointment in this new position marks the first female to ever be given a place in the team, so once again, the fact that she even applies for the job just shows her determination to make changes to old-fashioned attitudes in the Police.
As usual, Jane is facing opposition from her male colleagues and superiors and is given a cold case to work on which they all believe will amount to nothing. However, they obviously underestimated Jane’s capabilities and she sets about solving the disappearance of a young student to prove herself to everyone on the team.
There are actually two cases investigated throughout the story and both are really interesting situations - but again I felt like the cases are there to provide a backdrop to the real point of these stories - Jane and her struggle to find her place in a male orientated career. Watching as she grows and learns with each promotion throughout the series has been the most satisfying element and the confidence she finds in herself towards the end of the series is a really important message to get across.
Who doesn’t love a lynda la planet, grew up read the authors books and loved every single one and this story didn’t disappoint either, brilliant characters and storyline was gripping
#WholeLifeSentence #NetGalley This is a great series featuring the newly promoted DCI Jane Tennison. Jane has to fight for every little scrap of recognition in this male dominated and sexist environment, but she proves she is worthy of the promotion although her male colleagues don't really see it that way. Having watched and loved the Prime Suspect TV series it has been great to read this series which is the prequel to Prime Suspect. I can hear Helen Mirren as Jane Tennison in every page!! A great read!
Set in 1991 Jane Tennison is promoted to AMIT her new boss is less than warm towards her as he is of the old school of men who think woman should not be doing the same job !!!! He allocates her a cold case instead of the live case she was expecting hoping she will fail but he doesn't know DCI Jane Tennison !!! A great story plenty of twists and turns another gripping read .Thank you to NetGalley for my ARC .
Another excellent police procedural novel by Lynda La Plante.
The end of an era, well, the end of the Tennison years, and the start of Prime suspect…… this book is really good in showing how Jane Tennison became one of the first female Detective Chief Inspectors in Greater London's Metropolitan Police Service, who rises to the rank of Detective Superintendent while confronting institutionalised sexism within the police force.
Great series, I read and watched Prime Suspect prior to this series and that was no harm at all. You could read this series before or after.
Brilliant series and Tennison will be missed!
Lynda La Plante is back with a new Jane Tennison book and it’s a great read!
Jane is newly promoted and moves on to the Area Major incident pool this team investigates non domestic murders.
She is not welcomed with open arms , the elite unit is full of misogynistic and sexist male officers who do not want to see a woman succeed .
Tennison as always shows tenacity after all she hasn’t got where she is by following the lead of her male counterparts.
She is given a cold case , a girl is missing and the case is five years old .
Tennison finds new evidence and greatly enhances the case file , due to the initial investigation not being up to par.
The case is then snatched from beneath her by one of her male colleagues, who goes on to take the case to court .
They try their hardest to brow beat Jane but little do they know this only makes her more committed to showing them what she’s made of
An easy and enjoyable read.
Highly recommended ,although personally I’ve enjoyed all the books written by Lynda La Plante.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bonnier Books UK .
The last in the Jane Tennison series. Superbly written as ever.. Jane is out on a limb, she is being controlled and manipulated in her new role in M.I.T,, No woman would be good enough but Jane is determined to prove that she is more than good enough. I found the book very entertaining and didn't want it to finish.
The final book in the fabulous Tennison series which is followed by Prime Suspect, perhaps the most famous of the series by prolific author Lynda La Plante.
The last in the Tennison series sees our protagonist Jane in a new relationship and a new flat. She also successfully gains a job in a wholly male environment and from day 1 is in a battle to prove herself amongst the male chauvinists. Assigned a cold case among a team that usually deal with murder cases, Jane sets about seeking justice for a young woman who disappeared 5 years ago and was never traced.
Well written and pacy with interesting characters who we meet earlier in this series and later in Prime Suspect, the writing captures the life of a hard working woman trying to get ahead or stay afloat in a male dominated workplace. The setting of the time is well thought out and echoes back to the era well.
I have thoroughly enjoyed this series and this is a great end to it. I have read and watched Prime Suspect many times but will do so again to reacquaint myself with Jane’s journey.
Thanks to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
‘Whole Life Sentence’ is the final book in the Jane Tennison series which is a prequel to the Prime Suspect TV series. The series has followed Jane from being a probationer to Detective Chief Inspector over ten books and it has been illuminating how life has changed for Jane over the period. She still finds herself working in a force that is rife with misogyny but now she has the strength to face it head on! This is the last book but you can pick it up as a standalone read, although I do thoroughly recommend reading the whole series just so you can see Jane’s character adapt and change as she gets older and hopefully wiser.
Jane has just been promoted to DCI and has asked to be transfered to the Area Major Investigative Team (AMIT) which picks up the major crimes in central London. What she finds on her first day is a superior who is sexist, an office which is basically a cleaning cupboard and instead of a team of detectives Jane only has one WPC. Then instead of a high-profile case, she is handed a cold case in which a young woman disappeared 5 years ago. Jane is thoroughly demoralized but is still determined to find out the truth of what happened. She is also asked to assist in a suicide but Jane thinks there might be more to it.
This isn't a fast-paced book but I found it engrossing all the more for that as we got down to the real nitty gritty aspects and timelines, which is what normally gives people away when they commit crimes! I found it hard to read that even in 1991 Jane is still facing the same sexism as she did when she started back as a probationer. Even the lack of toilet provisions was repeated! Yes, Jane is stronger now but she shouldn't have to put up with it and this time round she is more crafty about how she addresses the system. I'm quite sad that this is the end of the series as I could read about Jane forever. I really enjoyed getting to know her and with her courageous and tenacious grit she really makes an engaging and enjoyable character.
