This was a wild ride! Cass and James find each other in the midst of grief. Having recently lost his mum, and estranged from his father, James is desperate to find a connection. Struggling with anxiety, and never truly healed from the death of her mother at an early age, Cass needs to make a bold change in her life. Together they decide to take on the role of caretakers at a long abandoned manor house. Cass will have time to paint. James who travels for work, will finally have a home to come back to. Together, they will start a new life.

But the house doesn't seem to want them there.

The audiobook was exhilarating! The opening chapter had me with my heart in my throat. The narrator did a fantastic job conveying the absolute terror of the situation. I was instantly hooked!

I received this book from netgalley.

I listened to this as an audio book prepublication thanks to NetGalley and HarperCollins. I thought I had worked out the plot…little did I know! This is definitely an author to add to the favourites list! I devoured this in 4 days…over 10 hours of audio but I was hooked! 100% recommend.

The narrator of this audiobook, Helen Keeley, did an amazing job. She was so clear and I got pulled in so quickly, which is also thanks to the story and writing itself, but sometimes a narrator can ruin an amazing book, so I was honestly thankful. I was able to listen and stay absorbed within the story while doing housework and so forth, not having to rewind or wonder what I’d missed.

I became so invested in this book, the story and the characters, to the point that I actually got emotional at certain points and wanted so badly to jump into it and help and divert the characters within. I haven’t teared up or cried at a book in a long while, until this read. I think certain parts hit so much more now that I am a mum and I felt it so much more deeper. So be prepared with some tissues.

I overall enjoyed this read, the storyline and the characters that were created, all dragged me in and kept me hooked. This has made me remember why I have a collection of her previous books and am now excited to finish reading them all!

This was super gripping and an enjoyable read. Although I liked the protagonist, some of her decisions were infuriating! But if I'm rolling my eyes at the character and I'm still invested in the story then I count that as a win. I liked where they went with Marina's story. I was a little bit confused around the 'big reveals', but that's not necessarily the story as I may have missed a bit here and there. Enjoyable, five stars.

Eerie houses with dark pasts always captivate me. When Cass and James are offered a bargain home just six months into their relationship, it seems to good to let slide, especially when Cass discovers she is pregnant. The house seems to whisper to them and things keep moving around or going missing. Is there something sinister going on? This is an edgebof your seat audiobook and each chapter fluctuates back and forth in time between the present and the dark past. Each chapter reveals a little more. By the second half, the surprises are unveiled one by one. The Intruders is a creepily good read/ listen. #theintruders #louisejensen #hqaudiobook #netgalley #HQ

I have read other Louise Jensen books, so jumped at the chance of listening to The Intruders when it was offered by NetGalley. I was right to want it. I flew through the book, totally hooked.
The story is heart-breaking for all involved, and really highlights the damage one (or two - or three, now I think about it) nasty men can do to the lives of everyone who comes into contact with them.
The book has an element of the supernatural which made it nice and creepy, but also a strong human side. Louise Jensen really understands people and why they become what they become.

Cass and James have found a great place to live! The best part - it is free in return for some house sitting. How lucky are they???? But the manor home comes with a sad history. Thirty years ago, a home invasion left many of the family members living there dead.

Then things begin to happen, things are moved to new locations, there is the strange feeling of being familiar with the home....

For me this was a slow burn until around the 50% mark. I felt for Cass as James became concerned about her mental health. I enjoyed how the book went back and forth in time, giving readers glimpses into the past. Things get very interesting near the end of the book as everything comes together. I was fully invested at the end and enjoyed having all the facts.

I listened to the audiobook and found it to be very done. I enjoyed the narration.

I just wished there were a few less characters and the plot was faster moving. I did enjoy the tension and the beginning of the book was fantastic! That got my attention and sucked me in! The ending was great as well. The middle part had me turning to other books.

I’ve read some of Louise Jensen’s books before and really enjoyed them, so I requested The Intruders from NetGalley.

Three stars from me means I believe the author has achieved their aims and it’s a good book, but that I personally didn’t fall in love with it.

In this case the tone of the novel is a bit melodramatic for me. Both James and Cass seem on the verge of hysteria throughout most of the plot. There’s also a supernatural element that isn’t for me.

However, if you don’t mind a ghostly presence and main characters whose security in their self-identity is easily shaken, this is a novel with plenty of action that will keep you guessing.

Oh my goodness, I loved this one! I found myself so completely immersed in this story, which as soon as you think you have a handle on what's actually happening, the rug is ripped from under you... in the best way.

There was such a level of eerie-ness in The Intruders. This is so atmospheric, painting a very vivid picture of the pure desperation within these characters.

We get a past and present timeline here, but it's a strange combination of narration between multiple different people... and it WORKED so well.

When a couple finds themselves as the house sitters (caretakers) for an abandoned home, in which they are able to stay there rent free in the capacity of caring for the house, Cass can immediately sense something strange about the place.

With a sordid past, this house looms like its very own conscious presence. Why do Cass and James feel such a pull to the house? What secrets will this place reveal to them?

I thought this was so well written. I was definitely on the edge of my seat the whole time. This was my first from this author, but it definitely won't be my last.

This started off strong and stayed that way right up until it finished. I must admit I wasn’t a fan of the character Cass she was really annoying and whiny and I definitely felt conflicted about some of the other characters but all the way through I was willing them to make the right decisions.
It took turns I was not expecting and I stayed up till the early hours so I could find out what happened.
Overall another great book by Louise Jensen she’s should definitely be on your radar if you love a thriller read!

Absolutely brilliant! I was totally immersed in this creepy and twisty story from the very start.

Cass and James are saving up for their own home, so the opportunity to house sit an old abandoned mansion while it is renovated is a no brainer. As soon as they move in though, strange things start to happen and Cass finds herself drawn to the history of the Madley family, who were murdered there 30 years ago.

As well as Cass’ story in the present day, in the past, young Rose tells us of the events leading up to the brutal murder of the family and as the truth is slowly revealed, peeled back layer by layer, I could hardly breathe for the tension!

A fast paced and addictive plot with compelling writing and fascinating characters. I listened to the audiobook and Helen Keeley brought the characters to life brilliantly.

5 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, Louise Jensen and Harper Collins for an ARC in return for an honest review.

Omg!! Wtf! Shut the front door! All the excitey exclamations!!

This is one of THE very best thrillers I’ve read, I don’t mean recently I mean ever. My heart was literally thumping. I was hooked instantly, and as I got to know James and Cassie more I was desperate to find out what was going on in their house. The answers were shocking, and it definitely all came to a climax that I could never have predicted!
Amazing pairing of writing and narration.
Absolutely outstanding!

Dark, tense and unpredictable.

Cass and James have only been together six months when they are offered the opportunity to live in an abandoned manor house rent free.

As their story unfolds, we also jump back 30 years and begin to unravel the events which led to this point.

Atmospheric and chilling with great narration.

Young Couple Cass and James, have been together 6 months, but feel like they’ve known each other forever.
They may be in the early days of their relationship but they know they want to be together.
When James is offered the opportunity to caretake an old mansion, he jumps at the chance and persuades Cass to join him

30 years ago, the Maddley family were subject to a home invasion which resulted in 3 of them dead. Only the toddler survived. The house has remained empty since then.

Until now. Cass and James move in, almost straight away Cass begins to feel uneasy is she losing her mind, or have the perpetrators from the attack come back for something?

Cass is emotionally unstable and doubts her experiences, are they happening or are they in her imagination? James begin to realise he doesn’t know Cass as well as he thought and also begins to doubt her experiences.

In this story we jump from 30 years ago, to the present day. With the story mixing between those affected then and now.

It was at times quite confusing. I thought I had it sussed at one point only to be thrown a curve ball.

I enjoyed listening to this story, I found the narrator captured the character of Cass quite well. I found her at times irritating and behaving in ways that seemed strange. But as the story evolves that kind of becomes clearer.

Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to listen to this title

Gore score 🗡️🗡️🗡️

I had the audiobook read by Helen Keeley. For me her performance is overly dramatic at the start but settles down. Due to the slow burn I think the narrator added to my enjoyment.

James and Cass move into a derelict Manor House rent free as custodians while it’s awaiting development approval. It has a dark history, it’s not long before strange things start happening.

There’s quite a few characters added into the time frame switches between now and 30 yrs earlier so it took some keeping track of on audio, it’s a slow burn.

The coincidences are a stretch but add to the story. It’s quite dark at one point so makes it onto my gore score.
It ends really strongly increasing my rating. Have to say I especially loved the second part of the book.

I loved this audio arc! This is a roller coaster of a book and full of many twists along the way! The narrator was fantastic and draws you into the dark story. The story is full of surprises and is definitely one of the best physiological thrillers I have read in a while. I would highly recommend this book especially the audio version. Thanks to Harper Collins and to netgalley for a chance to read and review

Thank you to Harpercollins Audio, Netgalley and Louise Jensen for the audio Arc of The Intruders.
Narrated by Helen Keeley

This is a tense, creepy psychological thriller which grabs you right from the beginning. Cass and James, newly into a relationship move into an Old house as caretakers to make sure no one breaks in and ransacks the place. It's been empty for along time due to a murder that took place years before. As time ticks by Cass is convinced that all is not right and senses a presence within the property.

The narrator. Helen Keeley has a perfect paced voice who kept the characters unique. You could clearly tell who was through through the narrative and the voice. The story itself has some very well placed twists and turns which leaves you wondering what direction the narrative will flow and you won't be disappointed. The ending and pay off was well executed.

A great gripping read. 4.25 stars

**listened to the audiobook**

I really enjoy a Louise Jensen book - but this one definitely is not one of my favs! I found this book to be really slow, and I just couldn't get into it.
The pacing just wasn't like your usual thriller and I found myself increasing the speed of the audio just so I could feel a bit more of tension.
The narrator was ok - think i have heard her on other books I have listened to.

I will read Jensen's next book, in the hope it returns back to her usual fast paced page turners!

Triple A! Astonishing, Amazing, Astounding and a hundred other equally praiseful words. Every time I thought I knew what was happening, I got thrown for a complete and utter loop again. Left me with a complete book hangover.
