Amazing…..It was a fast paced roller coaster ride that is packed full of so many twists and turns that by the time you reach the final twist, you are left feeling so dizzy that all you want to do is lie down in a dark room for a few hours or until your head stops spinning.
When moving in together, Cass and James naively take on a caretaker role for an old house which was the sight a a violent mass murder thirty years previously. Soon after arriving, Cass starts to think they may not be alone, as she experiences things moving around, stange music, and a haunting girlish presence. What exactly happened thirty years ago? And who is in the house with them now?
I'm hesitant to share more, because one of the most compelling features of this story is the shifts and turns in time, characters, and events, which leave you guessing (and in my case frequently down the wrong path). My heart is still racing after reading this story in a day, the suspense was so gripping and well built I didn't think I could go to bed without finishing! The author did a great job of creating an eerie atmosphere throughout, and the use of the song 'Run Rabbit Run' was terribly effective as an ongoing theme. The ambigous morality throughout was thought provoking and confronting - I still feel conflicted and unsettled about certain characters and their choices, which just served to heighten the thrilling nature of the story.
It reminded me a bit of one of my favourite Riley Sager books, Home Before Dark, and I would recommend to anyone looking for a similarly spooky, suspenseful and twisty read.
Thank you HarperCollins UK Audio and NetGalley for a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed are my own.
Join Cassie and James as they move into the mysterious Newington House, the longer they live there the more of its gruesome history is revealed. The story is told from multiple points of view which makes it even more gripping as you try to put all the pieces together. Alongside this there are dual timelines, the story travels back and forward between present day with James and Cassie and decades earlier where we see the build up to a horrific event at Newington House.
One of the best psychological thrillers that’s been released in a long time. It might even have a touch of the supernatural. There are so many good psychological thrillers around that it has become somewhat hard for the twists to catch you off guard or to really surprise you. However this was not the case with “The Intruders.” Each twist seemed bigger than the twist before. Each twist leading you closer to the horrors and disturbing truth of Newington House.
The narrator was fantastic and really helped you to immerse yourself in the story.
If you enjoy Claire Douglas, Freida McFadden or TM Logan then this should be your next read or listen.
Massive thank you to Harper Collins UK audio, HQ and NetGalley for this ARC.
