If you're looking for a getaway read, this is a perfect one. The holiday setting, the luxurious setting, definitely what people want out of their holiday. It took me a while to get into it but once I do, I enjoy the pace of the story. It was a medium-pace thriller for me with complicated characters.

The Getaway follows Lola fleeing to Keeper Island to escape a bloody mess in Hong Kong. She reunites with her old mentor, who invited her to 'paradise' - a private island for the rich and entitled - but is soon found dead, and Lola vows to find out who killed him.
Listen, I need you to know that my favourite thing in the world is a show about people getting killed on an island. I was so excited by the premise, but this just fell flat. I re-read the first chapter about 10 times as I just couldn't get into it, which is obviously not a good sign. The slow pace paired with a tonne of characters, none of whom I was made to care about, and very little plot peppered with some deaths and booze, really sank this book. There didn't feel like there was any actually stakes, no tension, and nothing to thrill me in this thriller. It's not the worst thing I've ever read but it was pretty boring.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC.

I really tried to like this, but it was hard. I had to stop and come back, stop and come back, but I did finish. The thing about a who done it is that you don’t know til the end, which this book surely does. The problem is, the pacing is too slow throughout it all and then at the end. There were too many pages after the first reveal, and it just seemed to drag on and on. The protagonist wasn’t a compelling character and while she had trauma, I wasn’t rooting for her.

The Getaway makes for a nice beach read. This didn't blow me away and wasn't anything new but overall it still made for a fun story.

I really enjoyed this book. The first book of Nicola's that I have read, but I hope there will be more to come.

I revisited this after an initial dnf.
A great hook at the beginning that pulled me in and got me interested. After that there were lots of inconsistencies and things that just didnt make sense.
No likeable characters.
Couldnt really understand the genre - there were so many good bits, but it seemed a mash up of thriller/ cosy crime.

Luxurious, opulent, tropical - an idyllic place until people die.
A gripping, enigmatic thriller with a fantastic pace, fabulously complicated characters and a sharp wit with a darkly fun edge.

I took this with me on vacation and it was the perfect travel companion.
The story kept me gripped, every time I thought I had it figured out there would be a new twist and everything was turned on its head. The pacing was quick but not so fast I couldn’t keep up.

✨ luxury, mystery thriller, whodunit!?
✨ Lola is escaping from her past in a tropical country. Slow Paced of a few chapter but I felt like I’m away because of the writing. Anyway, when she thought she escaped from the reality, an unexpected turn of events happened and why is she involved!?
✨ the story was easily a ‘whodunit’ vibes with a predictable ending. I felt like I have read the same scenario but it was a great read.
Light mystery and worth the read.

Really enjoyed this read, perfect thriller for cosying up on the sofa during the holidays.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for sharing this book with me for my honest review.

This was a fast read! So many twists and turns that I did not see coming, I loved it. I had no idea where this was going and that's so refreshing. Not to mention it was also atmospheric. Very White Lotus - I could totally see this being adapted for TV.

Absolutely brilliant book!
I am a big fan of this author and love the writing style!
I cant wait to read more!

The Getaway by Nicola Martin is a great tropical thriller that combines luxury, mystery, and suspense. It was a bit slow at the start but once you get into it, there's no turning back.
Set on the exclusive Keeper Island resort, new manager Lola is hoping for a fresh start after a traumatic event in her past. But when her boss is found dead, her dream job quickly turns into a nightmare.
The author captures the clash between the opulence of the super-rich guests and the hidden lives of the resort staff. Lola is a strong, relatable protagonist, determined to uncover the truth while dealing with her own fears and insecurities.
Packed with twists and secrets, the story kept me guessing and provides a glimpse into the dark side of wealth and privilege.
Getaway is an enticing read, with a thrilling pace and a setting as beautiful-and as dangerous-as it
seems.

I really struggled to get through this book. I felt like the death happened too soon. It clearly rattled the character but I just couldn’t empathize with it.

Always enjoy a look behind the curtain of 5* luxury establishments and how long suffering staff cope with the tantrums of the mega rich. Lola is an enjoyable protagonist and the story is built well so that the reader is both never sure whether she is reliable but at the same time are pulled along with her in the mystery of the resort where nothing feels quite right. A great beach read.

I loved the start of this novel, along with the twists at the end, but I found the pacing in the middle of the story to be slow and I felt as though it was dragging on a bit. Aside from that, I enjoyed following Lola and loved her development throughout!

I found this a little slow getting started but was hooked by the time I was half way through and couldn’t put it down. On of my favourite thrillers I’ve read for a while, I enjoyed the twists and turns and multilayered nature of the plot. Will definitely be recommending!

I’d like to thank NetGalley and the publisher & author for the ARC version which has allowed me to give you this completely unbiased review.
Lola was an interesting character from the get go. It was difficult to trust whether she was a reliable narrator to begin with, however, as the story went on the back story made her more interesting and the reasons for why she comes across as cagey and grey. I ended up loving her.
Overall the story was wonderful. I’ve come to love murder mysteries, so this was a delightful little read. The setting was gorgeous and some of the characters we meet on Keeper Island really help make the story something special (Diara I’m looking at you baby girl).
If you need to escape for an afternoon or two, go to Keeper Island with Lola and the gang.

This was a good read, I loved the setting and could immerse myself in the holiday vibe! Nice character development and a storyline that kept me hooked.

This book is probably very fun for the genre and it spoke to me. However I’m not the target audience so I’m afraid my review will not be a good one. I didn’t care for the story and I hoped it would be as gripping as the blurb, but this is not the book to draw me into the genre
