I'm not a pub lover but I did love the history of London that this shared. Lots of fun, unique information that you likely wouldn't learn elsewhere.
There is no denying, there are few things as entertaining as enjoying a pub with friends or family. Over the course of 50 plus years, I have haunted countless pubs both in London and throughout the UK. I have also read and reviewed numerous “[overs guides” for London. So, it is not going to be an easy task to impress me. Consider me impressed.
I found the text was lively and interesting with just the right mix of history and fancy to make for enjoyable reading even without the pub. I liked the way it told the tale of the area of London where the pub sits and how it fits into the overall narrative of the city. I hate to admit how many pub thresholds I have crossed that made it into the book. And I can think of plenty that could make it into a second volume. I also loved when the book linked something about the pub that has produced an expression that we still use today.
It is not a guide book where the tourist can plan a pub crawl. In many cases, these pubs will be destinations. But it is a good assortment of pubs that will satisfy both local and visitor. Since I am reading and reviewing a Kindle ARC, I cannot judge the photos although I suspect they are lovely. But I will still recommend this with a five purrs and two paws up.
It made me wish I was in Londong: full of information, easy to follow, perfect as a guide
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine
The Pub Lovers Guide To London by Callum Moy is a great book filled with the beginning and on going love for pubs in Britain and although this one only covers London it’s still is packed with history and interesting stories. From those named after royalty to the pubs only fit for royalty to the ones inspired by World War II everything in between and after. I have never been to a pub in London but love the country and I knew I would like this book but I totally enjoyed it more than I thought as it had more to offer than what I initially assumed. This is a great guide for an adventurous holiday especially because all the pubs are in London… 7000 of them to be precise. There is a lot I am not putting in this review but you can read it for yourself and as it is a quick read and before I knew it the book was over but don’t take short for something not compelling it is a truly interesting read.#NetGalley, #PenAndSwordPress, #CallumMoy, #ThePubLoversGuideToLondon,
ondon is my favorite city, and one of the best things about it is the pubs which are found in every part of the city. Anyone who also loves London will want to pick up an excellent guide to these pubs, The Pub Lover’s Guide to London , by Callum Moy. If you’re planning to visit London anytime soon, you’ll want to make sure you have this guide with you.
The book is divided into unique chapters such as government, culture, diversity, religion, reform, etc. and showcases pubs that fit into those categories. The book includes beautiful photographs of every pub as well as photographs of places in London. Each pub featured has information, history, and trivia that is not only interesting, but fun to read.
Pubs generally have great menus – always with fish and chips, sausage and mash, shepherd’s pie – iconic English dishes, and most also have great crumbles and sticky toffee pudding for dessert. These pubs aren’t regular bars like in the US, rather, they are places to take the family to eat, or places to watch big football games. Most have rustic décor, and visitors often feel they are dining in another world.
All told, this is one guide book that travelers need to have with them when visiting. It is an excellent book.
Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.
Pub, yeah!
This is a very immersive pub guide to London. You get history, recommendations and locations.
So, yeah, if you are across the pond, in London, this is a great book to utilize while in the city.
Recommend.
I have always wanted to visit London and spend a night drinking at the pub. Since I don’t even have a passport, this book was my plane ticket. I loved it all. The stories and all the pictures were fabulous. Definitely made me want to go even more.
I was asked to review this interesting book for NetGalley
We go across to London a lot and literally come across pubs, but with this informative book we can now look for pubs included in this book.
There are good quality pictures and historical facts.
So when you are off to London keep this book with you to discover a grest pub you would otherwise miss.
London has around 7,000 pubs, an average of 25 pubs per square mile. No other capital city in the world matches this density. Because of this they can always be found near a place of historical significance. The majority of this book deals with the history of London, then telling about a pub nearby, and giving some fun facts about it as well. There are lots of pictures of the pubs and the surrounding area in there, and the history is fascinating. I am a huge history fan, and I have always wanted to travel to London, so this book was perfect for me, but I don't think it would interest the average pub crawler. This would be best enjoyed by history buffs, or someone planning a trip to London, who was also interested in visiting some of the historical places listed in the book.
London tops my bucket list of places to visit someday, and one of the things I'd like to do there is visit as many pubs as I can. They appear to be a key part of British culture throughout the centuries. This guide book to British pubs lists just a few of the thousands of pubs in London and gives the history of the neighborhoods where they stand. I would have liked a bit more information about some of these pubs, but this book fulfills its purpose of giving a "tour" of sorts. Great photos throughout.
The Pub Lover's Guide to London is a fascinating look back into London's history with interesting facts, obscure trivia, and fantastic pub recommendations. As I have visited London several times, it was fun reading about the historical sites and pubs that I've already frequented. But, for me, the highlight of the book was planning all my future explorations for my next trip to London. The author does a fantastic job of explaining the most well-known sites and history and combining them with the lesser-known and even more intriguing stories. The photos are gorgeous and add to the overall book. I will definitely be buying a hard copy of this book! I'd recommend The Pub Lover's Guide to London to anyone who loves travel, history, and food!
Note: Thank you to NetGalley, Pen & Sword Publishing, and Callum Moy for the advanced reader copy of the book. This review will also be posted on NetGalley. What follows is my unbiased review of the book.
I love visiting London. More than once, a friend has arranged a pub crawl for us when we visit, focusing on different things. With a trip coming up soon, I saw this available on Netgalley and thought I could advocate for some different selections after reading it.
While this book purports to be a guide to pubs in London, it’s actually loaded up with history. The author seems to be trying to point to locations with a great historical impact and then talk about a pub that’s near that location. Unfortunately, that meant the book was about 90% history and about 10% pubs. The descriptions of the pubs don’t say much, either. Usually, it was a generic “variety of local drafts and food” which really doesn’t tell me anything. However, having been educated in the United States, I enjoyed reading the history of London, which wasn’t covered in our history books on this side of the pond. I was particularly interested in how London came to be during the Roman Empire and how the various cities within it were formed, as well as the history of the areas of the city.
Then, I read the section titled It’s only Rock ‘n’ Roll, Moy states: The foundations of Soho were discussed earlier (see page 96). Its reputation as a centre of rock and pop music can be traced to the Second World War when the genre was introduced by American troops stationed in London. I was incredulous. There might have been blues, big band, and jazz brought over by the troops in World War II, but certainly not rock ‘n’ roll which didn’t come about until the 1950s. After reading this, I wondered how much of the history presented here was accurate.
I’ve been to some of the pubs he highlights in this book, and I think he could have written more about the pubs themselves and their history and less about the general history of the area they are located in. I learned more about the pubs themselves from my friend’s planning than from this book.
There are many better guidebooks out there for London and for pubs. While I enjoyed learning about London’s history, I can’t be sure how accurate it is. Maps might have helped to understand where the pubs are located. I wouldn’t recommend this one.
I received a copy of this eBook from netGalley for a honest review.
This book made me miss London the only big city I could see myself living in. So much history with each of these pubs and of London too. The pictures made this book, showing the beauty and uniqueness of each pub and it's surrounding area. If your going to London or just want to know more about that great city this is a wonderful book for you to explore!
This is a great way to discover pubs in London. I loved all the historical facts and information included. Both about pubs in general and the individual pubs featured.
It was good to learn more about pubs I had already visited and also to pick some pubs I would like to visit in the future.
A fun and informative way to discover new places to go. A fab read. I’m now going to get my husband to read it and pick his favourite to visit soon.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
Did you know that the city of London has an average of 25 pubs per square mile, making it the most pub-dense city in the world? This informative guide showcases 52 pubs and describes significant history that occurred near each. It's like an historical field trip with beer -- a fine way to learn with info-rich text and fine color photos. Cheers!
Disappointing.
I thought this would be a good guide to London pubs with some decent photos of interiors. I was rather random bits of history interspersed with photos of the outside of pubs.
There are better books out there on the subject matter.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC
4.5/5
Very informative. I was expecting more about the history of the pubs of London instead of the overall history of London and England, but well-written nonetheless. I appreciate that the addresses for each of the pubs are listed to make them easier to find. I've visited London twice and loved some of the familiar spots I've seen.
We’re always in the process of planning our next trip to London (never quite make it) and pubs will be a big part of the visit. There’s a lot of history included in each description and the book is laid out by that history, such as conquest or commerce, rather than location, which will require a little more effort to seek them out; I prefer guides to be laid out by location so if I find myself in a particular area, I can just look to see what’s in the area. Otherwise, this was a fun guide that will make you seek out these pubs.
I have visited a few pubs in London but this will help me push my visits to the next level and cannot wait to visit more pubs in London soon with the help of this guide.
I love London and this was a perfect book The Pub Lover's Guide to London by Callum Moy had great history and information about the Pubs. Included were some great photos. My favourite was learning about the Sherlock Holmes Pub. Thank you to the publisher and author for a copy of this book to review. #ThePubLoversGuidetoLondon #NetGalley
